Exodus 1

1 Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt (euery man and his housholde came thither with Iaakob)

Dette er navnene på Israels sønner som kom til Egypten; med Jakob kom de, hver med sitt hus:

2 Reuben, Simeon, Leui, and Iudah,

Ruben, Simeon, Levi og Juda,

3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Beniamin,

Issakar, Sebulon og Benjamin,

4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

Dan og Naftali, Gad og Aser.

5 So al the soules, that came out of the loines of Iaakob, were seuentie soules: Ioseph was in Egypt already.

De som nedstammet fra Jakob, var i alt sytti sjeler; men Josef var allerede i Egypten.

6 Nowe Ioseph died and all his brethren, and that whole generation.

Og Josef døde og alle hans brødre og hele den slekt.

7 And the children of Israel brought foorth fruite and encreased in aboundance, and were multiplied, and were exceeding mightie, so that the land was full of them.

Men Israels barn var fruktbare og tok sterkt til og blev mange og overmåte tallrike, og landet blev fullt av dem.

8 Then there rose vp a newe King in Egypt, who knewe not Ioseph.

Da kom det en ny konge over Egypten, som ikke visste noget om Josef.

9 And he sayde vnto his people, Beholde, the people of the children of Israel are greater and mightier then we.

Og han sa til sitt folk: Se, israelittenes folk er større og tallrikere enn vi.

10 Come, let vs worke wisely with them, least they multiplie, and it come to passe, that if there be warre, they ioyne them selues also vnto our enemies, and fight against vs, and get them out of the land.

Nu vel, la oss gå klokt til verks mot dem, forat de ikke skal ta mere til, og forat de ikke, om det kommer krig, skal slå sig i lag med våre fiender og føre krig mot oss og dra ut av landet.

11 Therefore did they set taskemasters ouer them, to keepe the vnder with burdens: and they built the cities Pithom and Raamses for the treasures of Pharaoh.

Så satte de arbeidsfogder over dem til å plage dem med tvangsarbeid; og de måtte bygge for Farao to byer til oplagssteder, Pitom og Ra'amses.

12 But the more they vexed them, the more they multiplied and grewe: therefore they were more grieued against the children of Israel.

Men jo mere de plaget dem, dess mere tok de til, og dess mere bredte de sig ut, så egypterne begynte å grue for Israels barn.

13 Wherefore the Egyptians by crueltie caused the children of Israel to serue.

Og egypterne tvang Israels barn til å træle for sig,

14 Thus they made them weary of their liues by sore labour in clay and in bricke, and in al worke in the fielde, with all maner of bondage, which they layde vpon them most cruelly.

og de forbitret livet for dem med hårdt trælarbeid i ler og tegl og med alle slags trælarbeid på marken, alt det trælarbeid som de tvang dem til å gjøre.

15 Moreouer the King of Egypt commanded ye midwiues of the Ebrewe women, (of which the ones name was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah)

Og kongen i Egypten sa til de hebraiske jordmødre - den ene av dem hette Sifra og den andre Pua -:

16 And sayde, When ye doe the office of a midwife to the women of the Ebrewes, and see them on their stooles, if it be a sonne, then yee shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then let her liue.

Når I hjelper de hebraiske kvinner til å føde, så skal I se efter i jordmorstolen; er det da en sønn, sa drep ham, men er det en datter, da kan hun leve.

17 Notwithstanding ye midwiues feared God, and did not as the King of Egypt commanded them, but preserued aliue the men children.

Men jordmødrene fryktet Gud og gjorde ikke som kongen i Egypten bød dem, men lot guttebarna leve.

18 Then the King of Egypt called for the midwiues, and sayde vnto them, Why haue yee done thus, and haue preserued aliue the men children?

Da kalte kongen i Egypten jordmødrene til sig og sa til dem: Hvorfor gjør I dette og lar guttebarna leve?

19 And the midwiues answered Pharaoh, Because the Ebrewe women are not as the women of Egypt: for they are liuely, and are deliuered yer the midwife come at them.

Jordmødrene svarte Farao: De hebraiske kvinner er ikke som de egyptiske, de er sterkere; før jordmoren kommer til dem, har de født.

20 God therefore prospered the midwiues, and the people multiplied and were very mightie.

Og Gud gjorde vel imot jordmødrene; og folket tok til og blev overmåte tallrikt.

21 And because ye midwiues feared God, therefore he made them houses.

Og fordi jordmødrene fryktet Gud, gav han dem avkom.

22 Then Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Euery man childe that is borne, cast yee into the riuer, but reserue euery maide childe aliue.

Da bød Farao alt sitt folk og sa: Hver sønn som fødes, skal kastes i elven, men hver datter skal I la leve.
