< Exodus 1 >
1 Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt (euery man and his housholde came thither with Iaakob)
And these [are] the names of the sons of Israel who are coming into Egypt with Jacob; a man and his household have they come;
2 Reuben, Simeon, Leui, and Iudah,
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Beniamin,
Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
5 So al the soules, that came out of the loines of Iaakob, were seuentie soules: Ioseph was in Egypt already.
And all the persons coming out of the thigh of Jacob are seventy persons; as to Joseph, he was in Egypt.
6 Nowe Ioseph died and all his brethren, and that whole generation.
And Joseph dieth, and all his brethren, and all that generation;
7 And the children of Israel brought foorth fruite and encreased in aboundance, and were multiplied, and were exceeding mightie, so that the land was full of them.
and the sons of Israel have been fruitful, and they teem, and multiply, and are very very mighty, and the land is filled with them.
8 Then there rose vp a newe King in Egypt, who knewe not Ioseph.
And there riseth a new king over Egypt, who hath not known Joseph,
9 And he sayde vnto his people, Beholde, the people of the children of Israel are greater and mightier then we.
and he saith unto his people, 'Lo, the people of the sons of Israel [is] more numerous and mighty than we;
10 Come, let vs worke wisely with them, least they multiplie, and it come to passe, that if there be warre, they ioyne them selues also vnto our enemies, and fight against vs, and get them out of the land.
give help! let us act wisely concerning it, lest it multiply, and it hath come to pass, when war happeneth, that it hath been joined, even it, unto those hating us, and hath fought against us, and hath gone out up of the land.'
11 Therefore did they set taskemasters ouer them, to keepe the vnder with burdens: and they built the cities Pithom and Raamses for the treasures of Pharaoh.
And they set over it princes of tribute, so as to afflict it with their burdens, and it buildeth store-cities for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses;
12 But the more they vexed them, the more they multiplied and grewe: therefore they were more grieued against the children of Israel.
and as they afflict it, so it multiplieth, and so it breaketh forth, and they are vexed because of the sons of Israel;
13 Wherefore the Egyptians by crueltie caused the children of Israel to serue.
and the Egyptians cause the sons of Israel to serve with rigour,
14 Thus they made them weary of their liues by sore labour in clay and in bricke, and in al worke in the fielde, with all maner of bondage, which they layde vpon them most cruelly.
and make their lives bitter in hard service, in clay, and in brick, and in every [kind] of service in the field; all their service in which they have served [is] with rigour.
15 Moreouer the King of Egypt commanded ye midwiues of the Ebrewe women, (of which the ones name was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah)
And the king of Egypt speaketh to the midwives, the Hebrewesses, (of whom the name of the one [is] Shiphrah, and the name of the second Puah),
16 And sayde, When ye doe the office of a midwife to the women of the Ebrewes, and see them on their stooles, if it be a sonne, then yee shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then let her liue.
and saith, 'When ye cause the Hebrew women to bear, and have looked on the children; if it [is] a son — then ye have put him to death; and if it [is] a daughter — then she hath lived.'
17 Notwithstanding ye midwiues feared God, and did not as the King of Egypt commanded them, but preserued aliue the men children.
And the midwives fear God, and have not done as the king of Egypt hath spoken unto them, and keep the lads alive;
18 Then the King of Egypt called for the midwiues, and sayde vnto them, Why haue yee done thus, and haue preserued aliue the men children?
and the king of Egypt calleth for the midwives, and saith to them, 'Wherefore have ye done this thing, and keep the lads alive?'
19 And the midwiues answered Pharaoh, Because the Ebrewe women are not as the women of Egypt: for they are liuely, and are deliuered yer the midwife come at them.
And the midwives say unto Pharaoh, 'Because the Hebrew women [are] not as the Egyptian women, for they [are] lively; before the midwife cometh in unto them — they have borne!'
20 God therefore prospered the midwiues, and the people multiplied and were very mightie.
And God doth good to the midwives, and the people multiply, and are very mighty;
21 And because ye midwiues feared God, therefore he made them houses.
and it cometh to pass, because the midwives have feared God, that He maketh for them households;
22 Then Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Euery man childe that is borne, cast yee into the riuer, but reserue euery maide childe aliue.
and Pharaoh layeth a charge on all his people, saying, 'Every son who is born — into the River ye do cast him, and every daughter ye do keep alive.'
