Exodus 5
1 Then afterwarde Moses and Aaron went and said to Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may celebrate a feast vnto me in the wildernesse.
Puis, Moïse et Aaron vinrent trouver Pharaon et lui dirent: "Ainsi a parlé l’Éternel, Dieu d’Israël: Laisse partir mon peuple, pour qu’il célèbre mon culte dans le désert."
2 And Pharaoh saide, Who is the Lord, that I should heare his voyce, and let Israel go? I knowe not the Lord, neither will I let Israel goe.
Pharaon répondit: "Quel est cet Éternel dont je dois écouter la parole en laissant partir Israël? Je ne connais point l’Éternel et certes je ne renverrai point Israël."
3 And they saide, We worship the God of the Ebrewes: we pray thee, let vs goe three daies iourney in the desert, and sacrifice vnto the Lord our God, least he bring vpon vs the pestilence or sword.
Ils reprirent: "Le Dieu des Hébreux s’est manifesté à nous. Nous voudrions donc aller à trois journées de chemin dans le désert et sacrifier à l’Éternel notre Dieu, de peur qu’il ne sévisse sur nous par la peste ou par le glaive."
4 Then saide the King of Egypt vnto them, Moses and Aaron, why cause ye the people to cease from their workes? get you to your burdens.
Le roi d’Égypte leur dit: "Pourquoi, Moïse et Aaron, débauchez-vous le peuple de ses travaux? Allez à vos affaires!"
5 Pharaoh saide furthermore, Behold, much people is nowe in the lande, and ye make them leaue their burdens.
Pharaon ajouta: "Vraiment, cette population est nombreuse à présent dans le pays et vous leur feriez interrompre leurs corvées?"
6 Therefore Pharaoh gaue commandement the same day vnto the taskemasters of the people, and to their officers, saying,
Et Pharaon donna, ce jour même, aux commissaires du peuple et à ses surveillants l’ordre suivant:
7 Ye shall giue the people no more strawe, to make bricke (as in time past) but let them goe and gather them strawe them selues:
"Vous ne fournirez plus, désormais, de la paille au peuple pour la préparation des briques, comme précédemment; ils iront eux-mêmes faire leur provision de paille.
8 Notwithstanding lay vpon them the nober of bricke, which they made in time past, diminish nothing thereof: for they be idle, therefore they crie, saying, Let vs go to offer sacrifice vnto our God.
Du reste, la quantité de briques qu’ils faisaient précédemment, imposez-la leur encore, n’en rabattez rien. Car ils sont désœuvrés, voilà pourquoi ils profèrent ces clameurs: ‘Allons sacrifier à notre Dieu!’
9 Lay more worke vpon the men, and cause them to do it, and let the not regard vaine words.
Qu’il y ait donc surcharge de travail pour eux et qu’ils y soient astreints; et qu’on n’ait pas égard à des propos mensongers."
10 Then went the taskemasters of the people and their officers out, and tolde the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will giue you no more strawe.
Les commissaires du peuple et ses surveillants sortirent et parlèrent ainsi au peuple: "Voici ce qu’a dit Pharaon: ‘Je ne vous donnerai plus de paille;
11 Goe your selues, get you strawe where yee can finde it, yet shall nothing of your labour bee diminished.
vous mêmes, allez, fournissez-vous de paille où vous pourrez en trouver, car il n’est rien diminué de votre besogne.’"
12 Then were the people scattered abroade throughout all the land of Egypt, for to gather stubble in steade of strawe.
Et le peuple se répandit par tout le pays d’Égypte, pour ramasser du chaume en guise de paille.
13 And the taskemasters hasted them, saying, Finish your dayes worke euery dayes taske, as ye did when ye had strawe.
Les commissaires le harcelaient, disant: "Remplissez votre tâche jour par jour, comme lorsque la paille vous était livrée."
14 And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaohs taskemasters had set ouer them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore haue ye not fulfilled your taske in making bricke yesterday and to daye, as in times past?
On frappa les surveillants des enfants d’Israël que les commissaires de Pharaon leur avaient préposés, en disant: "Pourquoi n’avez—vous pas fait toute votre tâche en livrant les briques comme précédemment, ni hier ni aujourd’hui?"
15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came, and cryed vnto Pharaoh, saying, Wherfore dealest thou thus with thy seruants?
Les surveillants des enfants d’Israël vinrent se plaindre à Pharaon en ces termes: "Pourquoi traites-tu ainsi tes serviteurs?
16 There is no strawe giuen to thy seruantes, and they say vnto vs, Make bricke: and loe, thy seruants are beaten, and thy people is blamed.
La paille, il n’en est pas fourni à tes serviteurs et pourtant on nous dit ‘Faites des briques!’ A présent tes serviteurs sont frappés et c’est ton peuple qui est coupable."
17 But he said, Ye are to much idle: therfore ye say, Let vs goe to offer sacrifice to the Lord.
Il répondit: "Vous êtes des gens désœuvrés, oui, désœuvrés! c’est pour cela que vous dites: ‘Allons sacrifier à l’Éternel.’
18 Goe therefore nowe and worke: for there shall no strawe be giuen you, yet shall yee deliuer the whole tale of bricke.
Et maintenant, allez au travail! La paille ne vous sera point donnée et vous fournirez la même quantité de briques."
19 Then the officers of the children of Israel sawe them selues in an euill case, because it was saide, Ye shall diminish nothing of your bricke, nor of euery dayes taske.
Les surveillants des enfants d’Israël les traitèrent avec rigueur, en disant: "Vous ne ferez pas moins de briques que précédemment, jour par jour."
20 And they met Moses and Aaron, which stood in their way as they came out from Pharaoh,
Or, ils avaient rencontré Moïse et Aaron, debout devant eux, comme ils sortaient de chez Pharaon;
21 To whom they said, The Lord looke vpon you and iudge: for yee haue made our sauour to stinke before Pharaoh and before his seruants, in that ye haue put a sword in their hand to slay vs.
et ils leur avaient dit: "Que l’Éternel vous regarde et vous juge, vous qui nous avez mis en mauvaise odeur auprès de Pharaon et de ses serviteurs; vous qui avez mis le glaive dans leur main pour nous faire périr!"
22 Wherefore Moses returned to the Lord, and saide, Lord, why hast thou afflicted this people? wherefore hast thou thus sent me?
Moïse retourna vers le Seigneur et dit: "Mon Dieu, pourquoi as-tu rendu ce peuple misérable? Dans quel but m’avais-tu donc envoyé?
23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speake in thy Name, he hath vexed this people, and yet thou hast not deliuered thy people.
Depuis que je me suis présenté à Pharaon pour parler en ton nom, le sort de ce peuple a empiré, bien loin que tu aies sauvé ton peuple!"
