Exodus 18

1 When Iethro the Priest of Midian Moses father in lawe heard all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and howe the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt,

Cependant, Jéthro, prêtre de Madian, beau-père de Moïse, apprit tout ce que le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël avait fait en faveur de son peuple; car le Seigneur avait tiré Israël de l'Égypte.

2 Then Iethro the father in lawe of Moses, tooke Zipporah Moses wife, (after he had sent her away)

Et Jéthro, beau-père de Moïse, avait reçu Séphora, femme de Moïse, après la séparation,

3 And her two sonnes, (whereof the one was called Gershom: for he sayd, I haue bene an aliant in a strange land:

Ainsi que ses deux fils, l'un, qu'à sa naissance il nomma Gersam, parce que, dit-il, je suis passager en une contrée étrangère,

4 And the name of the other was Eliezer: for the God of my father, said he, was mine helpe, and deliuered me from the sword of Pharaoh)

L'autre, qu'il nomma Eliézer, parce que, dit-il, Dieu est mon auxiliaire, et il m'a tiré des mains du Pharaon.

5 And Iethro Moses father in law came with his two sonnes, and his wife vnto Moses into the wildernes, where he camped by ye mout of God.

Jéthro, beau-père de Moïse, les fils de celui-ci et sa femme, partirent donc pour l'aller trouver dans le désert, où il campait sur la montagne du Seigneur.

6 And he said to Moses, I thy father in law Iethro am come to thee, and thy wife and her two sonnes with her.

Et l'on vint dire à Moïse: Voilà que ton beau-père Jéthro arrive avec ta femme et tes deux fils.

7 And Moses went out to meete his father in law, and did obeisance and kissed him, and eche asked other of his welfare: and they came into the tent.

Moïse alla à la rencontre de son beau-père; il se prosterna devant lui, et il le baisa; après qu'ils se furent tous embrassés, il les conduisit sous sa tente.

8 Then Moses told his father in law all that the Lord had done vnto Pharaoh, and to the Egyptians for Israels sake, and all the trauaile that had come vnto them by the way, and howe the Lord deliuered them.

Là, Moïse raconta à son beau-père, tout ce que le Seigneur avait fait aux Égyptiens et à Pharaon, à cause d'Israël, ainsi que toutes ses souffrances sur la route, depuis que le Seigneur les avait tirés d'Égypte.

9 And Iethro reioyced at all the goodnesse, which the Lord had shewed to Israel, and because he had deliuered them out of the hande of the Egyptians.

Jéthro fut saisi d'admiration pour les bienfaits de Dieu en faveur du peuple, et parce qu’il l’avait tiré des mains des Égyptiens, et des mains du Pharaon.

10 Therfore Iethro sayd, Blessed be the Lord who hath deliuered you out of the hande of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh: who hath also deliuered the people from vnder the hand of the Egyptians.

Et Jéthro dit: Béni soit le Seigneur, parce qu'il a tiré Israël des mains des Égyptiens, et des mans du Pharaon.

11 Now I know that the Lord is greater then all the gods: for as they haue dealt proudly with them, so are they recompensed.

Je reconnais aujourd'hui à ce qui est advenu, quand les Égyptiens vous ont poursuivis, que le Seigneur est grand au-dessus de tous les dieux.

12 Then Iethro Moses father in lawe tooke burnt offerings and sacrifices to offer vnto God. And Aaron and all the Elders of Israel came to eat bread with Moses father in law before God.

Et Jéthro, beau-père de Moïse, fit des holocaustes et des sacrifices à Dieu. Or, Aaron et tous les anciens d'Israël survinrent pour manger des pains devant le Seigneur, avec le beau-père de Moïse.

13 Now on the morow, when Moses sate to iudge the people, the people stoode about Moses from morning vnto euen.

À l'aurore, Moïse s'assit pour juger le peuple, et la multitude comparut devant Moïse, depuis le matin jusqu'au soir.

14 And when Moses father in law saw all that he did to the people, he sayde, What is this that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thy selfe alone, and all the people stande about thee from morning vnto euen?

Jéthro, ayant vu tout ce qu'il faisait en faveur du peuple, dit: Que fais-tu? Pourquoi sièges-tu seul, quand le peuple comparait devant toi, depuis le matin jusqu'au soir?

15 And Moses sayd vnto his father in law, Because the people come vnto me to seeke God.

Moïse répondit à son beau-père: Tout le peuple vient à moi, demander jugement au nom du Seigneur.

16 When they haue a matter, they come vnto me, and I iudge betweene one and another, and declare the ordinances of God, and his lawes.

Quand une contestation s'élève entre eux, ils viennent à moi, je juge chacun, et je leur rappelle les commandements de Dieu et sa loi.

17 But Moses father in law said vnto him, The thing which thou doest, is not well.

Et le beau-père de Moïse lui dit: Tu n'agis pas bien en cette œuvre.

18 Thou both weariest thy selfe greatly, and this people that is with thee: for the thing is too heauie for thee: thou art not able to doe it thy selfe alone.

Tu consumeras toi et ton peuple par une fatigue insoutenable; trop pesante est cette œuvre pour toi, et tu ne pourras la faire seul.

19 Heare nowe my voyce, (I will giue thee counsell, and God shalbe with thee) be thou for the people to Godwarde, and report thou the causes vnto God,

Ecoute-moi donc; je te donnerai un conseil, et Dieu sera avec toi; sois pour le peuple l'interprète des choses de Dieu, et rapporte à Dieu ses paroles.

20 And admonish them of the ordinances, and of the lawes, and shew them the way, wherein they must walke, and the worke that they must do.

Tu leur déclareras les ordres de Dieu et sa loi tu leur indiqueras les voies en lesquelles ils doivent marcher, et les œuvres qu'ils auront à faire.

21 Moreouer, prouide thou among al the people men of courage, fearing God, men dealing truely, hating couetousnesse: and appoynt such ouer them to be rulers ouer thousandes, rulers ouer hundreths, rulers ouer fifties, and rulers ouer tennes.

Cependant, choisis parmi le peuple, pour te les associer, des hommes forts et pieux, des hommes justes, haïssant l'orgueil; mets à la tête du peuple des chefs de mille hommes, des chefs de cent, des chefs de cinquante et des chefs de dix.

22 And let them iudge the people at all seasons: but euery great matter let them bring vnto thee, and let them iudge all small causes: so shall it be easier for thee, when they shall beare the burden with thee.

Qu'ils jugent le peuple à toute heure, qu'ils te rapportent toute affaire d'importance, qu'ils jugent eux-mêmes les causes les plus faciles; ils allégeront ainsi ton labeur en le partageant.

23 If thou do this thing, (and God so command thee) both thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go quietly to their place.

Si tu exécutes ce projet, Dieu te fortifiera et tu pourras tenir bon, et ce peuple s'en ira en paix au lieu où il doit aller.

24 So Moses obeyed the voyce of his father in law, and did all that he had sayd:

Moïse fut docile au conseil de son beau-père, et il exécuta ce qu'il lui avait dit.

25 And Moses chose men of courage out of all Israel, and made them heads ouer the people, rulers ouer thousandes, rulers ouer hundreths, rulers ouer fifties, and rulers ouer tennes.

Moïse, parmi tous les fils d'Israël, choisit des hommes forts; il les mit à la tête du peuple: chefs de mille, chefs de cent, chefs de cinquante, chefs de dix.

26 And they iudged the people at all seasons, but they brought the hard causes vnto Moses: for they iudged all small matters themselues.

Ceux-ci jugèrent le peuple à toute heure; ils rapportèrent à Moïse toute affaire d'importance, et ils jugèrent eux-mêmes toute affaire facile.

27 Afterward Moses let his father in law depart, and he went into his countrey.

Alors, Moïse congédia son beau-père, et celui-ci retourna dans son pays.
