Ecclesiastes 4
1 So I turned and considered all the oppressions that are wrought vnder the sunne, and beholde the teares of the oppressed, and none comforteth them: and lo, the strength is of the hand of them that oppresse them, and none comforteth them.
Je me suis tourné vers d’autres choses, et j’ai vu les oppressions qui se font sous le soleil, et les larmes des innocents que personne ne console: j’ai vu qu’ils ne peuvent résister à la violence des oppresseurs, étant destitués du secours de tous.
2 Wherefore I praysed the dead which now are dead, aboue the liuing, which are yet aliue.
Et j’ai loué les morts plus que les vivants;
3 And I count him better then them both, which hath not yet bin: for he hath not seene the euill workes which are wrought vnder the sunne.
Et j’ai jugé plus heureux que les uns et les autres, celui qui n’est pas encore né, et qui n’a pas vu les maux qui se font sous le soleil.
4 Also I beheld all trauaile, and all perfection of workes that this is ye enuie of a man against his neighbour: this also is vanitie and vexation of spirit.
De nouveau j’ai contemplé tous les travaux des hommes; et j’ai vu que l’industrie est exposée à l’envie du prochain: et en cela donc est vanité et soin superflu.
5 The foole foldeth his hands, and eateth vp his owne flesh.
L’insensé met ses mains l’une dans l’autre, et mange ses chairs, disant:
6 Better is an handfull with quietnesse, then two handfuls with labour and vexation of spirit.
Mieux vaut une poignée avec le repos, que les deux mains pleines avec le travail et l’affliction d’esprit.
7 Againe I returned, and sawe vanitie vnder the sunne.
Considérant, j’ai trouvé encore une autre vanité sous le soleil:
8 There is one alone, and there is not a second, which hath neither sonne nor brother, yet is there none end of all his trauaile, neither can his eye be satisfied with riches: neither doeth he thinke, For whome doe I trauaile and defraude my soule of pleasure? this also is vanitie, and this is an euill trauaile.
Tel est seul et n’a pas un second, ni fils, ni frère, et cependant il ne cesse de travailler, et ses yeux ne se rassasient pas de richesses; et il ne réfléchit pas, et il ne dit pas: Pour qui est-ce que je travaille? pour qui est-ce que je prive mon âme des biens? En cela aussi est vanité, et une affliction très malheureuse.
9 Two are better then one: for they haue better wages for their labour.
Mieux vaut donc être deux ensemble, que d’être seul; car ils ont l’avantage de leur société;
10 For if they fal, the one wil lift vp his felow: but wo vnto him that is alone: for he falleth, and there is not a second to lift him vp.
Si l’un tombe, il sera soutenu par l’autre. Malheur à celui qui est seul! Parce que, lorsqu’il tombe, il n’a pas qui le relève.
11 Also if two sleepe together, then shall they haue heate: but to one how should there be heate?
Et s’ils dorment deux, ils s’échaufferont mutuellement: un seul, comment s’échauffera-t-il?
12 And if one ouercome him, two shall stand against him: and a threefolde coard is not easily broken.
Et si quelqu’un prévaut contre un seul, deux lui résistent: un cordon triple est difficilement rompu.
13 Better is a poore and wise childe, then an olde and foolish King, which will no more be admonished.
Vaut mieux un enfant pauvre et sage, qu’un roi vieux et insensé qui ne sait pas prévoir pour l’avenir.
14 For out of the prison he commeth forth to reigne: when as he that is borne in his kingdome, is made poore.
Parce que quelquefois, tel sort de la prison et des chaînes pour régner: tel autre, né dans la royauté, se consume dans une extrême pauvreté.
15 I behelde all the liuing, which walke vnder the sunne, with the second childe, which shall stand vp in his place.
J’ai vu tous les vivants qui marchent sous le soleil avec le second jeune homme qui se lèvera à sa place.
16 There is none ende of all the people, nor of all that were before them, and they that come after, shall not reioyce in him: surely this is also vanitie and vexation of spirit.
Il est infini, le nombre du peuple de tous ceux qui ont été avant lui; et ceux qui doivent venir après ne se réjouiront pas en lui; mais cela aussi est vanité et affliction d’esprit.
