Ecclesiastes 4
1 So I turned and considered all the oppressions that are wrought vnder the sunne, and beholde the teares of the oppressed, and none comforteth them: and lo, the strength is of the hand of them that oppresse them, and none comforteth them.
Puis je me suis mis à considérer toutes les oppressions qui se commettent sous le soleil; et voici, les opprimés sont dans les larmes, et ils n'ont point de consolateur; la force est du côté de ceux qui les oppriment: pour eux, point de consolateur.
2 Wherefore I praysed the dead which now are dead, aboue the liuing, which are yet aliue.
C'est pourquoi j'estime plus les morts qui sont déjà morts, que les vivants qui sont encore en vie;
3 And I count him better then them both, which hath not yet bin: for he hath not seene the euill workes which are wrought vnder the sunne.
Et plus heureux que les uns et les autres, celui qui n'a pas encore été, et qui n'a point vu les mauvaises actions qui se font sous le soleil.
4 Also I beheld all trauaile, and all perfection of workes that this is ye enuie of a man against his neighbour: this also is vanitie and vexation of spirit.
J'ai vu aussi que tout travail et toute habileté dans le travail n'est que jalousie de l'un à l'égard de l'autre. Cela aussi est une vanité et un tourment d'esprit.
5 The foole foldeth his hands, and eateth vp his owne flesh.
L'insensé se croise les mains et se consume lui-même:
6 Better is an handfull with quietnesse, then two handfuls with labour and vexation of spirit.
Mieux vaut plein le creux de la main avec repos, que plein les deux paumes, avec travail et tourment d'esprit.
7 Againe I returned, and sawe vanitie vnder the sunne.
Je me suis mis à regarder une autre vanité sous le soleil.
8 There is one alone, and there is not a second, which hath neither sonne nor brother, yet is there none end of all his trauaile, neither can his eye be satisfied with riches: neither doeth he thinke, For whome doe I trauaile and defraude my soule of pleasure? this also is vanitie, and this is an euill trauaile.
Tel homme est seul, et n'a point de second; il n'a ni fils, ni frère, et toutefois, il n'y a point de fin à tout son travail; même ses yeux ne se rassasient jamais de richesses; il ne se dit point: Pour qui est-ce que je travaille et que je prive mon âme du bien? Cela aussi est une vanité et une pénible occupation.
9 Two are better then one: for they haue better wages for their labour.
Deux valent mieux qu'un; parce qu'il y a pour eux un bon salaire de leur travail.
10 For if they fal, the one wil lift vp his felow: but wo vnto him that is alone: for he falleth, and there is not a second to lift him vp.
Car s'ils tombent, l'un peut relever l'autre; mais malheur à celui qui est seul, et qui tombe, et n'a personne pour le relever.
11 Also if two sleepe together, then shall they haue heate: but to one how should there be heate?
De même si deux couchent ensemble, ils auront chaud; mais celui qui est seul, comment aura-t-il chaud?
12 And if one ouercome him, two shall stand against him: and a threefolde coard is not easily broken.
Et si quelqu'un est plus fort qu'un seul, les deux lui pourront résister; et la corde à trois cordons ne se rompt pas si tôt.
13 Better is a poore and wise childe, then an olde and foolish King, which will no more be admonished.
Mieux vaut un enfant pauvre et sage qu'un roi vieux et insensé, qui ne sait pas recevoir de conseil.
14 For out of the prison he commeth forth to reigne: when as he that is borne in his kingdome, is made poore.
Car tel sort de prison pour régner; et de même, tel étant né roi, devient pauvre.
15 I behelde all the liuing, which walke vnder the sunne, with the second childe, which shall stand vp in his place.
J'ai vu tous les vivants qui marchent sous le soleil, entourer l'enfant, le second après le roi, et qui le remplacera.
16 There is none ende of all the people, nor of all that were before them, and they that come after, shall not reioyce in him: surely this is also vanitie and vexation of spirit.
Et il n'y avait point de fin à tout le peuple, à tous ceux à la tête desquels il était; cependant ceux qui viendront après ne se réjouiront point à son sujet. Certainement, cela aussi est une vanité et un tourment d'esprit.
