Deuteronomy 1
1 These bee the wordes which Moses spake vnto all Israel, on this side Iorden in the wildernesse, in the plaine, ouer against the red Sea, betweene Paran and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Di-zahab.
Ce sont ici les paroles que Moïse dit à tout Israël, en deçà du Jourdain, dans le désert, dans la plaine, vis-à-vis de Suph, entre Paran et Thophel, Laban, Hatséroth et Di-Zahab.
2 There are eleuen dayes iourney from Horeb vnto Kadesh-barnea, by the way of mout Seir.
Il y a onze journées depuis Horeb, par le chemin de la montagne de Séhir, jusqu’à Kadès-Barnéa.
3 And it came to passe in the first day of the eleuenth moneth, in the fourtieth yeere that Moses spake vnto the children of Israel according vnto all that the Lord had giuen him in commandement vnto them,
– Et il arriva, en la quarantième année, au onzième mois, le premier [jour] du mois, que Moïse parla aux fils d’Israël, selon tout ce que l’Éternel lui avait commandé pour eux,
4 After that he had slaine Sihon the king of the Amorites which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, which dwelt at Ashtaroth in Edrei.
après qu’il eut frappé Sihon, roi des Amoréens, qui habitait à Hesbon, et Og, roi de Basan, qui habitait à Ashtaroth, à Édréhi.
5 On this side Iorden in the lande of Moab began Moses to declare this lawe, saying,
En deçà du Jourdain, dans le pays de Moab, Moïse commença à exposer cette loi, en disant:
6 The Lord our God spake vnto vs in Horeb, saying, Ye haue dwelt long ynough in this mount,
L’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous parla en Horeb, disant: Vous avez assez demeuré dans cette montagne.
7 Turne you and depart, and goe vnto the mountaine of the Amorites, and vnto all places neere thereunto in the plaine, in the mountaine, or in the valley: both Southwarde, and to the Sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and vnto Lebanon: euen vnto the great riuer, the riuer Perath.
Tournez-vous, et partez, et allez à la montagne des Amoréens et dans tous les lieux voisins, dans la plaine, dans la montagne, et dans le pays plat, et dans le midi, et sur le rivage de la mer, au pays des Cananéens et au Liban, jusqu’au grand fleuve, le fleuve Euphrate.
8 Beholde, I haue set the land before you: go in and possesse that land which the Lord sware vnto your fathers, Abraham, Izhak, and Iaakob, to giue vnto them and to their seede after them.
Regarde, j’ai mis le pays devant vous: entrez, et possédez le pays que l’Éternel a juré à vos pères, à Abraham, à Isaac, et à Jacob, de leur donner, et à leur semence après eux.
9 And I spake vnto you the same time, saying, I am not able to beare you my selfe alone:
Et je vous parlai, en ce temps-là, disant: Je ne puis, moi seul, vous porter.
10 The Lord your God hath multiplied you: and beholde, ye are this day as the starres of heauen in nomber:
L’Éternel, votre Dieu, vous a multipliés, et vous voici aujourd’hui, en multitude, comme les étoiles des cieux.
11 (The Lord God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many moe as ye are, and blesse you, as he hath promised you)
Que l’Éternel, le Dieu de vos pères, ajoute à votre nombre 1 000 fois ce que vous êtes, et vous bénisse, comme il vous l’a dit!
12 Howe can I alone beare your combrance and your charge, and your strife?
Comment porterais-je, moi seul, votre charge, et votre fardeau, et vos contestations?
13 Bring you men of wisedome and of vnderstanding, and knowen among your tribes, and I will make them rulers ouer you:
Donnez-vous des hommes sages, et intelligents, et connus, selon vos tribus, et je les établirai chefs sur vous.
14 Then ye answered me and said, The thing is good that thou hast commanded vs to doe.
Et vous m’avez répondu et avez dit: La chose que tu as dit de faire est bonne.
15 So I tooke the chiefe of your tribes wise and knowen men, and made them rulers ouer you, captaines ouer thousands, and captaines ouer hundreds, and captaines ouer fiftie, and captaines ouer tenne, and officers among your tribes.
Et je pris les chefs de vos tribus, des hommes sages et connus, et je les établis chefs sur vous, chefs de milliers, et chefs de centaines, et chefs de cinquantaines, et chefs de dizaines, et officiers sur vos tribus.
16 And I charged your iudges that same time, saying, Heare the controuersies betweene your brethren, and iudge righteously betweene euery man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.
– Et je commandai à vos juges, en ce temps-là, disant: Écoutez [les différends] entre vos frères, et jugez avec justice entre un homme et son frère, et l’étranger qui est avec lui.
17 Ye shall haue no respect of person in iudgement, but shall heare the small aswell as the great: yee shall not feare the face of man: for the iudgement is Gods: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring vnto me, and I will heare it.
Vous ne ferez point acception des personnes dans le jugement; vous entendrez aussi bien le petit que le grand; vous n’aurez peur d’aucun homme, car le jugement est de Dieu; et l’affaire qui sera trop difficile pour vous, vous me la présenterez, et je l’entendrai.
18 Also I commanded you the same time all the things which ye should doe.
Et je vous commandai, en ce temps-là, toutes les choses que vous devez faire.
19 Then we departed from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wildernesse (as yee haue seene) by the way of the mountaine of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded vs: and we came to Kadesh-barnea.
Et nous sommes partis d’Horeb, et nous avons traversé tout ce grand et terrible désert que vous avez vu, le chemin de la montagne des Amoréens, comme l’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous l’avait commandé, et nous sommes venus jusqu’à Kadès-Barnéa.
20 And I saide vnto you, Yee are come vnto the mountaine of the Amorites, which the Lord our God doeth giue vnto vs.
Et je vous dis: Vous êtes arrivés jusqu’à la montagne des Amoréens, laquelle l’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous donne.
21 Beholde, the Lord thy God hath layde the land before thee: go vp and possesse it, as the Lord the God of thy fathers hath saide vnto thee: feare not, neither be discouraged.
Regarde, l’Éternel, ton Dieu, a mis devant toi le pays: monte, prends possession, comme l’Éternel, le Dieu de tes pères, te l’a dit; ne crains point et ne t’effraie point.
22 Then ye came vnto me euery one, and said, We wil send men before vs, to search vs out the land and to bring vs word againe, what way we must go vp by, and vnto what cities we shall come.
Et vous vous êtes tous approchés de moi, et vous avez dit: Envoyons des hommes devant nous, et ils examineront le pays pour nous, et ils nous rapporteront des nouvelles du chemin par lequel nous pourrons monter et des villes auxquelles nous viendrons.
23 So the saying pleased me well, and I tooke twelue men of you, of euery tribe one.
Et la chose fut bonne à mes yeux, et je pris d’entre vous douze hommes, un homme par tribu.
24 Who departed, and went vp into the mountaine, and came vnto the riuer Eshcol, and searched out the land.
Et ils se tournèrent, et montèrent dans la montagne, et vinrent jusqu’au torrent d’Eshcol, et explorèrent le [pays].
25 And tooke of the fruite of the land in their hands, and brought it vnto vs, and brought vs worde againe, and sayd, It is a good land, which the Lord our God doeth giue vs.
Et ils prirent dans leurs mains du fruit du pays et nous l’apportèrent, et ils nous rendirent compte et dirent: Le pays que l’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous donne, est bon.
26 Notwithstanding, ye would not go vp, but were disobedient vnto the commandement of the Lord your God,
Mais vous n’avez pas voulu monter, et vous avez été rebelles au commandement de l’Éternel, votre Dieu.
27 And murmured in your tentes, and sayd, Because the Lord hated vs, therefore hath hee brought vs out of the land of Egypt, to deliuer vs into the hand of the Amorites, and to destroy vs.
Et vous avez murmuré dans vos tentes et vous avez dit: C’est parce que l’Éternel nous hait, qu’il nous a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, afin de nous livrer aux mains des Amoréens, pour nous détruire.
28 Whither shall we go vp? our brethren haue discouraged our hearts, saying, The people is greater, and taller then we: the cities are great and walled vp to heauen: and moreouer we haue seene the sonnes of the Anakims there.
Où monterions-nous? Nos frères nous ont fait fondre le cœur, en disant: [C’est] un peuple plus grand et de plus haute taille que nous; les villes sont grandes, et murées jusqu’aux cieux; et de plus nous avons vu là des fils des Anakim.
29 But I sayd vnto you, Dread not, nor be afrayd of them.
– Et je vous dis: Ne vous épouvantez pas, et ne les craignez point;
30 The Lord your God, who goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did vnto you in Egypt before your eyes,
l’Éternel, votre Dieu, qui marche devant vous, combattra lui-même pour vous, selon tout ce qu’il a fait pour vous sous vos yeux, en Égypte,
31 And in the wildernesse, where thou hast seene how the Lord thy God bare thee, as a man doeth beare his sonne, in all the way which ye haue gone, vntill ye came vnto this place.
et dans le désert, où tu as vu que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’a porté comme un homme porte son fils, dans tout le chemin où vous avez marché, jusqu’à ce que vous soyez arrivés en ce lieu-ci.
32 Yet for all this ye did not beleeue the Lord your God,
Mais, dans cette circonstance, vous n’avez point cru l’Éternel, votre Dieu,
33 Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tentes in, in fire by night, that ye might see what way to goe, and in a cloude by day.
qui, afin de reconnaître pour vous un lieu pour que vous y campiez, allait devant vous dans le chemin, la nuit, dans le feu, pour vous faire voir le chemin où vous deviez marcher, et, le jour, dans la nuée.
34 Then the Lord heard the voyce of your wordes, and was wroth, and sware, saying,
Et l’Éternel entendit la voix de vos paroles et fut courroucé, et jura, disant:
35 Surely there shall not one of these men of this froward generation, see that good land, which I sware to giue vnto your fathers,
Si aucun de ces hommes, de cette génération méchante, voit ce bon pays que j’ai juré de donner à vos pères!…
36 Saue Caleb the sonne of Iephunneh: he shall see it, and to him will I giue the land that he hath troden vpon, and to his children, because he hath constantly followed the Lord.
excepté Caleb, fils de Jephunné: lui, le verra, et je lui donnerai, et à ses fils, le pays où il a marché, parce qu’il a pleinement suivi l’Éternel.
37 Also the Lord was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not goe in thither,
Contre moi aussi l’Éternel s’irrita, à cause de vous, disant: Toi non plus, tu n’y entreras pas.
38 But Ioshua the sonne of Nun which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: incourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherite it.
Josué, fils de Nun, qui se tient devant toi, lui, y entrera; fortifie-le, car c’est lui qui le fera hériter à Israël.
39 Moreouer, your children, which ye sayd should be a praye, and your sonnes, which in that day had no knowledge betweene good and euill, they shall go in thither, and vnto them wil I giue it, and they shall possesse it.
Et vos petits enfants dont vous avez dit qu’ils seraient une proie, et vos fils qui aujourd’hui ne connaissent pas le bien et le mal, ceux-là y entreront, et c’est à eux que je le donnerai, et ils le posséderont.
40 But as for you, turne backe, and take your iourney into the wildernesse by the way of the red Sea.
Et vous, tournez-vous, et partez pour le désert, par le chemin de la mer Rouge.
41 Then ye answered and sayd vnto me, We haue sinned against the Lord, we wil go vp, and fight, according to all that the Lord our God hath commanded vs: and ye armed you euery man to the warre, and were ready to goe vp into the mountaine.
– Et vous avez répondu et m’avez dit: Nous avons péché contre l’Éternel; nous monterons, et nous combattrons, selon tout ce que l’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous a commandé. Et vous avez ceint chacun ses armes de guerre, et légèrement vous avez entrepris de monter dans la montagne.
42 But the Lord said vnto me, Say vnto them, Goe not vp, neither fight, (for I am not among you) least ye fall before your enemies.
Et l’Éternel me dit: Dis-leur: Ne montez pas, et ne combattez pas, car je ne suis point au milieu de vous, afin que vous ne soyez pas battus par vos ennemis.
43 And when I told you, ye would not heare, but rebelled against the commandement of the Lord, and were presumptuous, and went vp into the mountaine.
Et je vous parlai; mais vous n’avez point écouté, et vous avez été rebelles au commandement de l’Éternel, et vous avez été présomptueux, et êtes montés dans la montagne.
44 Then the Amorites which dwelt in that mountaine came out against you, and chased you (as bees vse to doe) and destroied you in Seir, euen vnto Hormah.
Et l’Amoréen, qui habitait cette montagne, sortit à votre rencontre, et vous poursuivit, comme font les abeilles, et il vous tailla en pièces en Séhir, jusqu’à Horma.
45 And when ye came againe, ye wept before the Lord, but the Lord would not heare your voyce, nor incline his eares vnto you.
Et à votre retour vous avez pleuré devant l’Éternel; et l’Éternel n’écouta point votre voix et ne vous prêta point l’oreille.
46 So ye abode in Kadesh a long time, according to the time that ye had remained before.
Et vous avez demeuré à Kadès plusieurs jours, selon les jours que vous y avez habité.
