Deuteronomy 9
1 Heare O Israel, Thou shalt passe ouer Iorden this day, to goe in and to possesse nations greater and mightier then thy selfe, and cities great and walled vp to heauen,
Ecoute, Israël, tu vas passer aujourd'hui le Jourdain, pour entrer chez des nations plus grandes et plus fortes que toi, vers des villes grandes et murées jusqu'au ciel, pour [les] posséder;
2 A people great and tall, euen the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak?
Vers un peuple grand et haut; [vers] les enfants des Hanakins, que tu connais, et desquels tu as ouï dire: Qui est-ce qui subsistera devant les enfants de Hanak?
3 Vnderstand therefore that this day ye Lord thy God is he which goeth ouer before thee as a consuming fire: he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them downe before thy face: so thou shalt cast them out and destroy them suddenly, as the Lord hath said vnto thee.
Sache donc aujourd'hui que l'Eternel ton Dieu, qui passe devant toi, est un feu consumant. C'est lui qui les détruira, et c'est lui qui les abaissera devant toi; tu les déposséderas, et tu les feras périr subitement comme l'Eternel te l'a dit.
4 Speake not thou in thine heart (after that the Lord thy God hath cast them out before thee) saying, For my righteousnesse the Lord hath brought me in, to possesse this land: but for the wickednesse of these nations the Lord hath cast them out before thee.
Ne dis point en ton cœur quand l'Eternel ton Dieu les aura chassés de devant toi: C'est à cause de ma justice que l'Eternel m'a fait entrer en ce pays pour le posséder; car c'est à cause de la méchanceté de ces nations-là que l'Eternel les va chasser de devant toi.
5 For thou entrest not to inherite their lande for thy righteousnesse, or for thy vpright heart: but for the wickednesse of those nations, the Lord thy God doth cast them out before thee, and that he might performe the worde which the Lord thy God sware vnto thy fathers, Abraham, Izhak, and Iacob.
Ce n'est point pour ta justice ni pour la droiture de ton cœur, que tu entres en leur pays pour le posséder; mais c'est pour la méchanceté de ces nations-là, que l'Eternel ton Dieu les va chasser de devant toi; et afin de ratifier la parole que l'Eternel a jurée à tes pères, Abraham, Isaac, et Jacob.
6 Vnderstand therefore, that ye Lord thy God giueth thee not this good land to possesse it for thy righteousnes: for thou art a stifnecked people.
Sache donc que ce n'est point pour ta justice, que l'Eternel ton Dieu te donne ce bon pays pour le posséder; car tu [es] un peuple de col roide.
7 Remember, and forget not, howe thou prouokedst the Lord thy God to anger in the wildernesse: since the day that thou diddest depart out of the land of Egypt, vntill ye came vnto this place ye haue rebelled against the Lord.
Souviens-toi, [et] n'oublie pas que tu as fort irrité l'Eternel ton Dieu dans ce désert, [et] que depuis le jour que vous êtes sortis du pays d'Egypte, jusqu'à ce que vous êtes arrivés en ce lieu-ci, vous avez été rebelles contre l'Eternel.
8 Also in Horeb ye prouoked the Lord to anger so that the Lord was wroth with you, euen to destroy you.
Même en Horeb vous avez fort irrité l'Eternel; aussi l'Eternel se mit en colère contre vous, pour vous détruire.
9 When I was gone vp into the mount, to receiue the tables of stone, the tables, I say, of the couenant, which the Lord made with you: and I abode in the mount fourtie daies and fourtie nights, and I neither ate bread nor yet dranke water:
Quand je montai en la montagne pour prendre les Tables de pierre, les Tables de l'alliance que l'Eternel avait traitée avec vous, je demeurai en la montagne quarante jours et quarante nuits, sans manger de pain, et sans boire d'eau.
10 Then the Lord deliuered me two tables of stone, written with the finger of God, and in them was conteyned according to all the wordes which the Lord had said vnto you in the mount out of the middes of the fire, in the day of the assemblie.
Et l'Eternel me donna deux Tables de pierre, écrites du doigt de Dieu, et ce qui y était écrit c'étaient les paroles que l'Eternel avait toutes proférées lorsqu'il parlait avec vous sur la montagne, du milieu du feu, au jour de l'assemblée.
11 And when the fourtie dayes and fourtie nightes were ended, the Lord gaue me the two tables of stone, the tables, I say, of the couenant.
Et il arriva qu'au bout de quarante jours et de quarante nuits, l'Eternel me donna les deux Tables de pierre, qui sont les Tables de l'alliance.
12 And the Lord said vnto me, Arise, get thee downe quickly from hence: for thy people which thou hast brought out of Egypt, haue corrupt their wayes: they are soone turned out of the way, which I commanded them: they haue made them a molten image.
Puis l'Eternel me dit: Lève-toi, descends en hâte d'ici; car ton peuple que tu as fait sortir d'Egypte, s'est corrompu; ils se sont bien-tôt détournés de la voie que je leur avais commandée, ils se sont fait une image de fonte.
13 Furthermore, the Lord spake vnto me, saying, I haue seene this people, and beholde, it is a stifnecked people.
L'Eternel me parla aussi, en disant: J'ai regardé ce peuple, et voici; c'est un peuple de col roide.
14 Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and put out their name from vnder heaue, and I wil make of thee a mightie nation, and greater then they be.
Laisse-moi, et je les détruirai, et j'effacerai leur nom de dessous les cieux, mais je te ferai devenir une nation plus puissante et plus grande que celle-ci.
15 So I returned, and came downe from the Mount (and the Mount burnt with fire, and ye two Tables of the couenant were in my two handes)
Je me retirai donc, et je descendis de la montagne. Or la montagne était toute en feu, et j'avais les deux Tables de l'alliance en mes deux mains.
16 Then I looked, and beholde, ye had sinned against the Lord your God: for ye had made you a molten calfe, and had turned quickly out of the way which the Lord had commanded you.
Puis je regardai, et voici, vous aviez péché contre l'Eternel votre Dieu, et vous vous étiez fait un veau de fonte; vous vous étiez bien-tôt détournés de la voie que l'Eternel vous avait commandée.
17 Therefore I tooke the two Tables, and cast them out of my two handes, and brake them before your eyes.
Alors je saisis les deux Tables, je les jetai de mes deux mains, et je les rompis devant vos yeux.
18 And I fell downe before the Lord, fourtie dayes, and fourtie nightes, as before: I neither ate bread nor dranke water, because of al your sinnes, which ye had committed, in doing wickedly in the sight of the Lord, in that ye prouoked him vnto wrath.
Puis je me prosternai devant l'Eternel, durant quarante jours et quarante nuits, comme auparavant, sans manger de pain, et sans boire d'eau, à cause de tout votre péché, que vous aviez commis, en faisant ce qui est déplaisant à l'Eternel, afin de l'irriter.
19 (For I was afraide of the wrath and indignation, wherewith the Lord was mooued against you, euen to destroy you) yet the Lord heard me at that time also.
Car je craignais la colère et la fureur dont l'Eternel était enflammé contre vous pour vous détruire; et l'Eternel m'exauça encore cette fois-là.
20 Likewise ye Lord was very angrie with Aaron, euen to destroy him: but at that time I prayed also for Aaron.
L'Eternel fut aussi fort irrité contre Aaron pour le détruire, mais je priai en ce même temps-là aussi pour Aaron.
21 And I tooke your sinne, I meane the calfe which ye had made, and burnt him with fire, and stamped him and ground him small, euen vnto very dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the riuer, that descended out of the mount.
Puis je pris votre péché que vous aviez fait, [savoir] le veau, et je le brûlai au feu, je le pilai en le broyant bien, jusqu'à ce qu'il fût réduit en poudre, et j'en jetai la poudre au torrent qui descendait de la montagne.
22 Also in Taberah, and in Massah and in Kibrothhattaauah ye prouoked ye Lord to anger.
Vous avez aussi fort irrité l'Eternel en Tabhéra et en Massa, et en Kibrothtaava.
23 Likewise when the Lord sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Goe vp, and possesse the land which I haue giuen you, then ye rebelled against the commandement of the Lord your God, and beleeued him not, nor hearkened vnto his voyce.
Et quand l'Eternel vous envoya de Kadès-barné, en disant: Montez, et possédez le pays que je vous ai donné, alors vous vous rebellâtes contre le commandement de l'Eternel votre Dieu, vous ne le crûtes point, et vous n'obéîtes point à sa voix.
24 Ye haue bene rebellious vnto the Lord, since the day that I knewe you.
Vous avez été rebelles à l'Eternel dès le jour que je vous ai connus.
25 Then I fell downe before ye Lord fourtie dayes and fourtie nightes, as I fell downe before, because ye Lord had said, that he woulde destroy you.
Je me prosternai donc devant l'Eternel durant quarante jours et quarante nuits, durant lesquels je me prosternai, parce que l'Eternel avait dit qu'il vous détruirait.
26 And I prayed vnto the Lord, and saide, O Lord God, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatnesse, whom thou hast brought out of Egypt by a mightie hand.
Et je priai l'Eternel, et je lui dis: Ô Seigneur Eternel! ne détruis point ton peuple, et ton héritage que tu as racheté par ta grandeur, [et] que tu as retiré d'Egypte, à main forte.
27 Remember thy seruants Abraham, Izhak, and Iaakob: looke not to ye stubburnes of this people, nor to their wickednes, nor to their sinne,
Souviens-toi de tes serviteurs Abraham, Isaac, et Jacob; ne regarde point à la dureté de ce peuple, ni a sa méchanceté, ni à son péché;
28 Lest the countrey, whence thou broughtest them, say, Because ye Lord was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, or because he hated them, he caried them out, to slay them in the wildernesse.
De peur que les habitants du pays, dont tu nous as fait sortir, ne disent: Parce que l'Eternel ne les pouvait pas faire entrer au pays dont il leur avait parlé, et parce qu'il les haïssait, il les a fait sortir [d'Egypte] pour les faire mourir en ce désert.
29 Yet they are thy people, and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out by thy mightie power, and by thy stretched out arme.
Cependant ils sont ton peuple et ton héritage, que tu as tirés [d'Egypte] par ta grande puissance, et à bras étendu.
