Deuteronomy 7
1 When the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possesse it, and shall roote out many nations before thee: the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hiuites, and the Iebusites, seuen nations greater and mightier then thou,
Quand l'Eternel ton Dieu t'aura fait entrer au pays où tu vas entrer pour le posséder, et qu'il aura arraché de devant toi beaucoup de nations, [savoir], les Héthiens, les Guirgasiens, les Amorrhéens, les Cananéens, les Phérésiens, les Héviens, et les Jébusiens, sept nations plus grandes et plus puissantes que toi;
2 And the Lord thy God shall giue them before thee, then thou shalt smite them: thou shalt vtterly destroy them: thou shalt make no couenant with them, nor haue compassion on them,
Et que l'Eternel ton Dieu te les aura livrées: alors tu les frapperas, et tu ne manqueras point de les détruire à la façon de l'interdit; tu ne traiteras point alliance avec eux, et tu ne leur feras point de grâce.
3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them, neither giue thy daughter vnto his sonne, nor take his daughter vnto thy sonne.
Tu ne t'allieras point par mariage avec eux; tu ne donneras point tes filles à leurs fils, et tu ne prendras point leurs filles pour tes fils.
4 For they wil cause thy sonne to turne away from me, and to serue other gods: then will the wrath of the Lord waxe hote against you and destroy thee suddenly.
Car elles détourneraient de moi tes fils, et ils serviraient d'autres dieux; ainsi la colère de l'Eternel s'enflammerait contre vous, et t'exterminerait tout aussitôt.
5 But thus ye shall deale with them, Ye shall ouerthrowe their altars, and breake downe their pillars, and ye shall cut downe their groues, and burne their grauen images with fire.
Mais vous les traiterez en cette manière; vous démolirez leurs autels, vous briserez leurs statues, vous couperez leurs bocages, et vous brûlerez au feu leurs images taillées.
6 For thou art an holy people vnto the Lord thy God, the Lord thy God hath chosen thee, to be a precious people vnto himselfe, aboue all people that are vpon the earth.
Car tu es un peuple saint à l'Eternel ton Dieu; l'Eternel ton Dieu t'a choisi, afin que tu lui sois un peuple précieux d'entre tous les peuples qui sont sur l'étendue de la terre;
7 The Lord did not set his loue vpon you, nor chose you, because ye were more in number then any people: for ye were the fewest of all people:
Ce n'est pas que vous fussiez en plus grand nombre qu'aucun de tous les [autres] peuples, et qu'à cause de cela l'Eternel vous ait aimés, et vous ait choisis; car vous étiez en plus petit nombre qu'aucun de tous les [autres] peuples.
8 But because the Lord loued you, and because hee would keepe the othe which hee had sworne vnto your fathers, the Lord hath brought you out by a mightie hand, and deliuered you out of the house of bondage from the hand of Pharaoh King of Egypt,
Mais c'est parce que l'Eternel vous aime, et qu'il garde le serment lequel il a fait à vos pères, que l'Eternel vous a retirés à main forte, et qu'il t'a racheté de la maison de servitude, de la main de Pharaon, Roi d'Egypte.
9 That thou mayest knowe, that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithfull God which keepeth couenant and mercie vnto them that loue him and keepe his commandements, euen to a thousand generations,
Connais donc que c'est l'Eternel ton Dieu qui est Dieu, le [Dieu] Fort, le fidèle, qui garde l'alliance et la gratuité jusqu'à mille générations à ceux qui l'aiment et qui gardent ses commandements.
10 And rewardeth them to their face that hate him, to bring them to destruction: he wil not deferre to reward him that hateth him, to his face.
Et qui rend la pareille à ceux qui le haïssent, [qui la rend] à chacun en face, pour les faire périr; il ne la gardera pas longtemps à celui qui le hait, il lui rendra la pareille en face.
11 Keepe thou therefore the commandements, and the ordinances, and the lawes, which I commaund thee this day to doe them.
Prends donc garde aux commandements, aux statuts, et aux droits que je te commande aujourd'hui, afin que tu les fasses.
12 For if ye hearken vnto these lawes, and obserue and doe them, then the Lord thy God shall keepe with thee the couenant, and the mercie which he sware vnto thy fathers.
Et il arrivera que si après avoir entendu ces ordonnances, vous les gardez et les faites, l'Eternel ton Dieu te gardera l'alliance et la gratuité qu'il a jurées à tes pères.
13 And he wil loue thee, and blesse thee, and multiplie thee: he will also blesse the fruite of thy wombe, and the fruite of thy land, thy corne and thy wine, and thine oyle and the increase of thy kine, and the flockes of thy sheepe in the land, which he sware vnto thy fathers to giue thee.
Et il t'aimera, et te bénira, et te multipliera; et il bénira le fruit de ton ventre, et le fruit de ta terre, ton froment, ton moût, et ton huile, et les portées de tes vaches, et des brebis de ton troupeau, sur la terre qu'il a juré à tes pères de te donner.
14 Thou shalt be blessed aboue all people: there shall be neither male nor female barren among you, nor among your cattell.
Tu seras béni plus que tous les peuples; [et] il n'y aura parmi toi ni mâle ni femelle stériles, ni entre tes bêtes.
15 Moreouer, the Lord will take away from thee all infirmities, and will put none of the euill diseases of Egypt (which thou knowest) vpon thee, but wil send them vpon all that hate thee.
L'Eternel détournera de toi toute maladie, et il ne fera point venir sur toi aucune des mauvaises langueurs d'Egypte que tu as connues, mais il les fera venir sur tous ceux qui te haïssent.
16 Thou shalt therefore consume all people which the Lord thy God shall giue thee: thine eye shall not spare them, neither shalt thou serue their gods, for that shalbe thy destruction.
Tu détruiras donc tous les peuples que l'Eternel ton Dieu te livre; ton œil ne les épargnera point; et tu ne serviras point leurs dieux, car ce te serait un piège.
17 If thou say in thine heart, These nations are moe then I, how can I cast them out?
Si tu dis en ton cœur: Ces nations-là sont en plus grand nombre que moi, comment les pourrai-je déposséder?
18 Thou shalt not feare them, but remember what the Lord thy God did vnto Pharaoh, and vnto all Egypt:
Ne les crains point; [mais] qu'il te souvienne bien de ce que l'Eternel ton Dieu a fait à Pharaon, et à tous les Egyptiens;
19 The great tentations which thine eyes sawe, and the signes and wonders, and the mighty hand and stretched out arme, whereby the Lord thy God brought thee out: so shall the Lord thy God do vnto all ye people, whose face thou fearest.
De ces grandes épreuves que tes yeux ont vues, des signes et des miracles, et de la main forte, et du bras étendu par lequel l'Eternel ton Dieu t'a fait sortir [d'Egypte]; ainsi fera l'Eternel ton Dieu à tous ces peuples desquels tu aurais peur.
20 Moreouer, the Lord thy God will send hornets among them vntil they that are left, and hide themselues from thee, be destroyed.
Même l'Eternel ton Dieu enverra contr'eux des frelons, jusqu'à ce que ceux qui resteront, et ceux qui se seront cachés de devant toi soient péris.
21 Thou shalt not feare them: for the Lord thy God is among you, a God mightie and dreadful.
Tu ne t'effrayeras point à cause d'eux; car l'Eternel ton Dieu, le [Dieu] Fort, grand, et terrible, est au milieu de toi.
22 And the Lord thy God wil roote out these nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, least the beasts of the fielde increase vpon thee.
Or l'Eternel ton Dieu arrachera peu à peu ces nations de devant toi; tu n'en pourras pas d'abord venir à bout, de peur que les bêtes des champs ne se multiplient contre toi.
23 But the Lord thy God shall giue them before thee, and shall destroy them with a mightie destruction, vntill they be brought to naught.
Mais l'Eternel ton Dieu les livrera devant toi, et les effrayera d'un grand effroi, jusqu'à ce qu'il les ait exterminées.
24 And he shall deliuer their Kings into thine hand, and thou shalt destroy their name from vnder heauen: there shall no man be able to stand before thee, vntill thou hast destroyed them.
Et il livrera leurs Rois entre tes mains, et tu feras périr leur nom de dessous les cieux; et personne ne pourra subsister devant toi, jusqu'à ce que tu les aies exterminés.
25 The grauen images of their gods shall ye burne with fire, and couet not the siluer and golde, that is on them, nor take it vnto thee, least thou be snared therewith: for it is an abomination before the Lord thy God.
Tu brûleras au feu les images taillées de leurs dieux; et tu ne convoiteras ni ne prendras pour toi l'argent ou l'or qui sera sur elles, de peur que tu n'en sois enlacé, car c'est une abomination aux yeux de l'Eternel ton Dieu.
26 Bring not therefore abomination into thine house, lest, thou be accursed like it, but vtterly abhorre it, and count it most abominable: for it is accursed.
Ainsi tu n'introduiras point d'abomination dans ta maison, afin que tu ne sois pas en interdit, comme cela, [mais] tu l'auras en extrême horreur; et en extrême détestation, car c'[est] un interdit.
