Deuteronomy 2
1 Then we turned, and tooke our iourney into the wildernes, by the way of the red Sea, as the Lord spake vnto me: and we compassed mount Seir a long time.
Et, nous étant mis en route, nous partîmes pour le désert, par le chemin de la mer Rouge, comme me l'avait dit le Seigneur, et pendant bien des jours nous contournâmes la montagne de Séir.
2 And the Lord spake vnto me, saying,
Et le Seigneur me dit:
3 Ye haue compassed this mountaine long ynough: turne you Northward.
C'est assez côtoyer cette montagne, partez donc et allez vers le septentrion.
4 And warne thou the people, saying, Ye shall go through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir, and they shall be afraide of you: take ye good heede therefore.
Donne au peuple mes ordres, disant: Vous passerez le long des frontières de vos frères les fils d'Esau, qui habitent en Séir, et ils auront crainte de vous, et ils vous redouteront grandement.
5 Ye shall not prouoke them: for I wil not giue you of their land so much as a foot breadth, because I haue giuen mount Seir vnto Esau for a possession.
Ne leur faites point la guerre, car de leur territoire je ne vous donne pas la longueur d'un pied, parce que j'ai donné pour héritage aux fils d'Esau la montagne de Séir.
6 Ye shall buy meate of them for money to eate, and ye shall also procure water of them for money to drinke.
Achetez-leur des vivres à prix d'argent, et mangez; prenez-leur de l'eau à la mesure pour de l'argent, et buvez.
7 For the Lord thy God hath blessed thee in all the workes of thine hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wildernes, and the Lord thy God hath bene with thee this fourtie yeere, and thou hast lacked nothing.
Car, le Seigneur notre Dieu t'a béni en tous les travaux de tes mains; considère comment tu as sillonné le grand et redoutable désert. Voici quarante ans que le Seigneur est avec toi, et tu n'as manqué d'aucune chose.
8 And when we were departed from our brethren the children of Esau which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plaine, from Elath, and from Ezion-gaber, we turned and went by the way of the wildernes of Moab.
Nous passâmes donc près de nos frères les fils d'Esau qui habitent la montagne de Séir, par le chemin d'Araba à partir d'Asion-Gaber, et en faisant un détour, nous arrivâmes sur la route du désert de Moab.
9 Then the Lord sayd vnto me, Thou shalt not vexe Moab, neither prouoke them to battel: for I wil not giue thee of their land for a possession, because I haue giuen Ar vnto the children of Lot for a possession.
Et le Seigneur me dit: Ne soyez point hostiles aux Moabites, ne leur faites point la guerre; je ne vous ai rien donné de ce territoire, car j'ai donné Aroer aux fils de Lot pour héritage.
10 The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great and many, and tall, as the Anakims.
Les Ommin l'ont habité les premiers: nation grande et nombreuse, puissante comme ceux d'Enac.
11 They also were taken for gyants as the Anakims: whom the Moabites call Emims.
Ils seront toujours réputés Raphaïm, comme ceux d'Enac, mais ils ont été nommés Ommin par les Moabites.
12 The Horims also dwelt in Seir before time, whome the children of Esau chased out and destroyed them before them, and dwelt in their steade: as Israel shall doe vnto the land of his possession, which the Lord hath giuen them.
Or, en Seir le Horrhéen habita d'abord, et les fils d'Esau le détruisirent; ils effacèrent cette nation devant eux; et à leur place ils habitèrent Séir, comme Israël a fait en la terre de son héritage, que le Seigneur lui a donnée.
13 Now rise vp, sayd I, and get you ouer the riuer Zered: and we went ouer the riuer Zered.
Levez-vous donc, partez et côtoyez le vallon de Zared.
14 The space also wherein we came from Kadesh-barnea, vntill we were come ouer the riuer Zered, was eight and thirtie yeeres, vntill all the generation of the men of warre were wasted out from among the hoste, as the Lord sware vnto them.
Or, nous avons mis trente-huit ans à venir de Cadès-Barné au vallon de Zared, et pendant ce temps toute la génération des hommes en état de porter les armes avait péri dans le camp, comme l'avait juré le Seigneur.
15 For in deede the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from among the hoste, till they were consumed.
Et la main du Seigneur était sur eux pour les faire périr au milieu du camp, jusqu'à ce qu'ils eussent succombé.
16 So when all the men of warre were consumed and dead from among the people:
Et lorsque les hommes en état de porter les armes eurent péri parmi le peuple,
17 Then the Lord spake vnto me, saying,
Le Seigneur me parla, disant:
18 Thou shalt goe through Ar the coast of Moab this day:
Tu vas aujourd'hui côtoyer les limites de Moab du côté d'Aroer;
19 And thou shalt come neere ouer against the children of Ammon: but shalt not lay siege vnto them, nor moue warre against them: for I will not giue thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession: for I haue giuen it vnto the children of Lot for a possession.
Vous serez près des fils d'Ammon; ne leur soyez point hostiles, ne leur faites point la guerre; je ne t'ai rien donné du territoire des fils d'Ammon, car j'ai donné cette terre pour héritage aux fils de Lot.
20 That also was taken for a land of gyants: for gyants dwelt therein afore time, whome the Ammonites called Zamzummims:
Elle sera réputée terre de Raphaïm, car les Raphaïm ont été ses premiers habitants, et les Ammonites les ont surnommés Zochommin,
21 A people that was great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims: but the Lord destroyed them before them, and they succeeded them in their inheritance, and dwelt in their stead:
Nation grande et nombreuse, plus puissante que vous, comme ceux d'Enac. Le Seigneur les a détruits devant les Ammonites; ceux-ci ont pris possession de leur terre, et à leur place, ils l'ont habitée jusqu'à ces temps.
22 As he did to the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims before them, and they possessed them, and dwelt in their stead vnto this day.
Ainsi avait-il fait en faveur des fils d'Esau qui habitent Séir; ceux-ci, ayant effacé devant eux le Horrhéen, ont pris possession de sa terre, et, à sa place, l'ont habitée jusqu'à ce jour.
23 And the Auims which dwelt in Hazarim euen vnto Azzah, the Caphtorims which came out of Caphtor destroyed them, and dwelt in their steade.
Pareillement les Evéens qui demeurent en Asedoth jusqu'à Gaza, et les Cappadociens venus de la Cappadoce, les ont détruits en cette contrée et l'habitent à leur place.
24 Rise vp therefore, sayd the Lord: take your iourney, and passe ouer the riuer Arnon: beholde, I haue giuen into thy hand Sihon, the Amorite, King of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possesse it and prouoke him to battell.
Levez-vous donc et partez, passez le long du torrent d'Arnon; je vous livre Séhon l'Amorrhéen, roi d'Esebon, et son territoire; commencez à posséder; engagez la guerre avec lui, aujourd'hui même.
25 This day wil I begin to send thy feare and thy dread, vpon all people vnder the whole heauen, which shall heare thy fame, and shall tremble and quake before thee.
Commence à jeter la terreur et la crainte de ton nom sur la face de toutes les nations qui sont sous le ciel; que ceux qui entendront ton nom soient troublés, que devant ta face elles ressentent les douleurs de la femme qui enfante.
26 Then I sent messengers out of the wildernes of Kedemoth vnto Sihon King of Heshbon, with wordes of peace, saying,
Alors, du désert de Cedamoth, j'envoyai des anciens à Séhon, roi d'Esebon, avec des paroles pacifiques, disant:
27 Let me passe through thy land: I will go by the hie way: I will neither turne vnto the right hand nor to the left.
Je traverserai ton territoire; je suivrai la route sans m'écarter ni à droite ni à gauche.
28 Thou shalt sell me meate for money, for to eate, and shalt giue me water for money for to drinke: onely I will go through on my foote,
Donne-moi à prix d'argent des vivres, et je mangerai; donne-moi pour de l'argent de l'eau, et je boirai; je passerai seulement à pied;
29 (As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did vnto me) vntill I be come ouer Iorden, into the land which the Lord our God giueth vs.
Comme me l'ont permis les fils d'Esau qui résident en Seir, et les Moabites qui demeurent en Aroer, afin que j'atteigne le Jourdain pour entrer en la terre que notre Dieu nous a donnée.
30 But Sihon the King of Heshbon would not let vs passe by him: for the Lord thy God had hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, because hee would deliuer him into thine hand, as appeareth this day.
Et Sehon, roi d'Esebon, ne nous permit pas de passer sur son territoire; car le Seigneur avait obscurci son esprit et endurci son cœur, afin qu'il tombât entre tes mains, comme il advint en ce jour.
31 And the Lord sayd vnto me, Beholde, I haue begun to giue Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possesse and inherite his land.
Et le Seigneur me dit: Voilà que je commence par te livrer Sehon, roi d'Esebon, et son territoire; commence toi aussi par prendre possession de sa contrée.
32 Then came out Sihon to meete vs, him selfe with all his people to fight at Iahaz.
Et Sehon, roi d'Esebon, sortit à notre rencontre, avec tout son peuple, pour nous combattre en Jassa.
33 But the Lord our God deliuered him into our power, and we smote him, and his sonnes, and all his people.
Et le Seigneur nous le livra: nous battîmes lui, ses fils, tout son peuple,
34 And we tooke all his cities the same time, and destroyed euery citie, men, and women, and children: we let nothing remaine.
Et nous nous rendîmes maîtres de ses villes en ce temps-là; nous détruisîmes toutes les villes, nous exterminâmes femmes et enfants, nous n'en laissâmes personne en vie.
35 Onely the cattell we tooke to our selues, and the spoyle of the cities which we tooke,
Nous ne prîmes que le bétail et la dépouille des villes.
36 From Aroer, which is by the banke of the riuer of Arnon, and from the citie that is vpon the riuer, euen vnto Gilead: there was not one citie that escaped vs: for the Lord our God deliuered vp all before vs.
Depuis Aroer qui est sur les bords du torrent d'Arnon, et la ville bâtie dans la gorge même, jusqu'aux montagnes de Galaad, il n'y eut point de ville qui nous échappât; le Seigneur notre Dieu nous les livra toutes.
37 Onely vnto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor vnto any place of the riuer Iabbok, nor vnto the cities in the mountaines, nor vnto whatsoeuer the Lord our God forbade vs.
Mais nous ne nous approchâmes, ni des fils d'Ammon, ni de ce qui borde le torrent de Jaboc, ni des villes de la région montagneuse, selon ce que le Seigneur Dieu nous avait prescrit.
