Deuteronomy 19
1 When the Lord thy God shall roote out the nations, whose lande the Lord thy God giueth thee, and thou shalt possesse them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses,
Lorsque l'Éternel, ton Dieu, aura extirpé les nations dont l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne le pays, et que tu les auras expulsées, et que tu seras établi dans leurs villes et dans leurs maisons,
2 Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the middes of thy lande which the Lord thy God giueth thee to possesse it.
tu sépareras trois villes au sein de ton pays que te donne l'Éternel, ton Dieu, pour l'occuper.
3 Thou shalt prepare thee the way, and deuide the coastes of the land, which the Lord thy God giueth thee to inherite, into three parts, that euery manslayer may flee thither.
Tu construiras la route [pour y arriver], et tu diviseras en trois le territoire de ton pays dont l'Éternel, ton Dieu, va te mettre en possession, pour y ouvrir un asile à tout homicide.
4 This also is ye cause wherfore the manslayer shall flee thither, and liue: who so killeth his neighbor ignorantly, and hated him not in time passed:
Et voici la règle pour l'homicide qui s'y réfugiera afin de sauver sa vie: Celui qui aura tué son prochain par mégarde, ne le haïssant ni d'hier ni d'avant-hier,
5 As hee that goeth vnto the wood with his neighbor to hew wood, and his hand striketh with the axe to cut downe the tree, if the head slip from the helue, and hit his neighbour that he dieth, the same shall flee vnto one of the cities, and liue,
et comme celui qui sera allé dans la forêt couper du bois avec son prochain, et brandira sa main armée de la hache pour abattre l'arbre, si le fer se détache du manche et atteint son prochain qui en meure, il se réfugiera dans l'une de ces villes pour mettre sa vie en sûreté,
6 Least the auenger of the blood follow after the manslayer, while his heart is chafed, and ouertake him, because the way is long, and slaie him, although he be not worthy of death, because he hated him not in time passed.
afin que le vengeur du sang, dans réchauffement de la colère, ne poursuive et n'atteigne pas l'homicide à la faveur de la longueur du chemin et ne lui ôte pas la vie, quand pourtant il ne mérite pas la mort, puisqu'il n'avait contre lui aucune haine antérieure.
7 Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt appoint out three cities for thee.
C'est pourquoi je te donne ce commandement: Tu sépareras trois villes.
8 And when the Lord thy God enlargeth thy coastes (as he hath sworne vnto thy fathers) and giueth thee all the lande which he promised to giue vnto thy fathers,
Et lorsque l'Éternel, ton Dieu, aura étendu ton territoire, comme Il l'a juré à tes pères, et qu'il t'aura donné tout le pays qu'il a promis de donner à tes pères
9 (If thou keepe all these commandements to doe them, which I commaund thee this day: to wit, that thou loue the Lord thy God, and walke in his waies for euer) then shalt thou adde three cities moe for thee besides those three,
(si tu gardes la totalité de ce commandement que je te prescris en ce jour pour le pratiquer, aimer l'Éternel, ton Dieu, et marcher dans ses voies en tout temps), tu ajouteras encore trois villes à ces trois,
10 That innocent bloude be not shed within thy land, which the Lord thy God giueth thee to inherite, lest bloud be vpon thee.
afin que le sang innocent ne soit pas versé dans ton pays que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, va te donner en propriété et que tu ne te mettes pas sous le poids du meurtre.
11 But if a man hate his neighbour, and lay waite for him, and rise against him, and smite any man that he die, and flee vnto any of these cities,
Mais si un homme hait son prochain et le guette et l'attaque et le frappe à mort, et qu'il se réfugie dans l'une de ces villes,
12 Then the Elders of his citie shall send and set him thence, and deliuer him into the hands of the auenger of the blood, that he may die.
les Anciens de sa ville enverront [des gens] pour l'en tirer, et le livreront aux mains du vengeur du sang, afin qu'il meure.
13 Thine eye shall not spare him, but thou shalt put away the crie of innocent blood from Israel, that it may goe well with thee.
Tu ne le regarderas pas avec pitié; ainsi tu déchargeras Israël du sang innocent et seras heureux.
14 Thou shalt not remooue thy neighbours marke, which they of olde time haue set in thine inheritance, that thou shalt inherite in the lande, which ye Lord thy God giueth thee to possesse it.
Tu ne déplaceras point les bornes de ton prochain, que les ancêtres ont placées dans ton héritage que tu posséderas dans le pays que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, va te donner pour en faire la conquête.
15 One witnes shall not rise against a man for any trespasse, or for any sinne, or for any fault that hee offendeth in, but at the mouth of two witnesses or at the mouth of three witnesses shall the matter be stablished.
Un témoin unique ne sera pas recevable contre quelqu'un dans aucune espèce de délit ou de péché quelconque, dans une espèce quelconque de péché dont on se rend coupable; une sentence ne sera valable que sur la déposition de deux ou de trois témoins.
16 If a false witnesse rise vp against a man to accuse him of trespasse,
Si un faux témoin se lève contre quelqu'un pour le déclarer coupable d'un crime,
17 Then both the men which striue together, shall stand before ye Lord, euen before the Priests and the Iudges, which shall be in those daies,
les deux parties comparaîtront devant l'Éternel, devant les Prêtres et les Juges qu'il y aura à cette époque.
18 And the Iudges shall make diligent inquisition: and if the witnesse be found false, and hath giuen false witnes against his brother,
Et les Juges informeront exactement; et si le témoin est un faux témoin, s'il a déposé faussement contre son frère,
19 Then shall yee doe vnto him as hee had thought to doe vnto his brother: so thou shalt take euil away forth of the middes of thee.
vous lui ferez subir ce qu'il pensait à faire à son frère.
20 And the rest shall heare this, and feare, and shall henceforth commit no more any such wickednes among you.
Ainsi vous ôterez le mal du milieu de vous; et les autres entendront et craindront, et à l'avenir ne commettront plus cette mauvaise action au milieu de vous.
21 Therefore thine eye shall have no compassion, but life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foote for foote.
Point de pitié! vie pour vie, œil pour œil, dent pour dent, main pour main, pied pour pied.
