Daniel 4
1 Nebuchad-nezzar King vnto all people, nations and languages, that dwell in all the world, Peace be multiplied vnto you:
Nabuchodonosor, roi, à tous les peuples, nations et langues qui habitent dans toute la terre: que la paix se multiplie pour vous.
2 I thought it good to declare the signes and wonders, that the hie God hath wrought toward me.
Le Dieu très haut a fait chez moi des prodiges et des merveilles. Il m’a donc plu de publier
3 How great are his signes, and how mightie are his wonders! his kingdome is an euerlasting kingdome, and his dominion is from generation to generation.
Ses prodiges, parce qu’ils sont grands, et ses merveilles, parce qu’elles sont puissantes; et son royaume est un royaume éternel, et sa puissance sera pour toutes les générations.
4 I Nebuchad-nezzar being at rest in mine house, and flourishing in my palace,
Moi, Nabuchodonosor, j’étais tranquille dans ma maison, et florissant dans mon palais;
5 Saw a dreame, which made me afraide, and the thoughtes vpon my bed, and the visions of mine head troubled me.
J’ai vu un songe qui m’a fort épouvanté; et mes pensées dans mon lit, et les visions de ma tête m’ont troublé.
6 Therefore made I a decree, that they should bring all the wise men of Babel before mee, that they might declare vnto me the interpretation of the dreame.
Et par moi fut publié le décret que fussent introduits en ma présence tous les sages de Babylone, afin qu’ils me donnassent l’explication de mon songe.
7 So came the inchanters, the astrologians, the Caldeans and the sothsayers, to whom I tolde the dreame, but they could not shew me the interpretation thereof,
Alors entrèrent les devins, les mages, les Chaldéens et les augures, et je racontai le songe en leur présence, et ils ne m’en donnèrent point l’explication;
8 Till at the last Daniel came before mee, (whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, which hath the spirite of the holy gods in him) and before him I tolde the dreame, saying,
Jusqu’à ce que fut introduit en ma présence, leur collègue Daniel, dont le nom est aussi Baltassar, selon le nom de mon dieu, et qui a en lui l’esprit des dieux saints; et je dis le songe devant lui.
9 O Belteshazzar, chiefe of the enchanters, because I know, that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell mee the visions of my dreame, that I haue seene and the interpretation thereof.
Baltassar, prince des devins, parce que moi je sais que tu as en toi l’esprit des dieux saints, et que nul secret n’est impénétrable pour toi, dis la vision de mes songes, et leur explication.
10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed. And beholde, I sawe a tree in the middes of the earth and the height thereof was great:
Vision de ma tête dans mon lit: Je voyais, et voilà un arbre au milieu de la terre, et sa hauteur était excessive.
11 A great tree and strong, and the height thereof reached vnto heauen, and the sight thereof to the endes of all the earth.
Cet arbre était grand et fort; et sa hauteur atteignait le ciel; sa vue s’étendait jusqu’aux extrémités de toute la terre.
12 The boughes thereof were faire and the fruite thereof much, and in it was meate for all: it made a shadow vnder it for the beastes of the fielde, and the foules of the heauen dwelt in the boughes thereof, and all flesh fedde of it.
Ses feuilles étaient très belles, et son fruit en très grande quantité, et en lui était la nourriture de tous; les animaux et les bêtes sauvages y habitaient dessous, et sur ses rameaux demeuraient les oiseaux du ciel; et de lui se nourrissait toute chair.
13 I sawe in the visions of mine head vpon my bed, and beholde, a watchman and an holy one came downe from heauen,
Je voyais dans la vision de ma tête sur mon lit; et voilà qu’un veillant et un saint descendit du ciel.
14 And cried aloude, and said thus, Hew downe the tree, and breake off his branches: shake off his leaues, and scatter his fruite, that the beastes may flee from vnder it, and the foules from his branches.
Il cria fortement, et dit ainsi: Coupez l’arbre par le pied et retranchez ses branches; faites tomber ses feuilles et jetez çà et là ses fruits; qu’ils s’enfuient, les animaux qui habitent sous son ombre, et que les oiseaux s’envolent de ses branches.
15 Neuerthelesse leaue the stumpe of his rootes in the earth, and with a band of yron and brasse binde it among the grasse of the fielde, and let it be wet with the dewe of heauen, and let his portion be with the beastes among the grasse of the fielde.
Cependant laissez dans la terre le germe de ses racines, et qu’il soit attaché avec un lien de fer et d’airain parmi les herbes qui sont en plein air; et que par la rosée du ciel il soit humecté, et qu’avec les bêtes féroces soit son partage dans l’herbe de la terre.
16 Let his heart be changed from mans nature, and let a beasts heart be giuen vnto him, and let seuen times be passed ouer him.
Que son cœur d’homme soit échangé, et qu’un cœur de bête féroce lui soit donné; et que sept temps soient renouvelés sur lui.
17 The sentence is according to the decree of the watchmen, and according to the word of the holy ones: the demaunde was answered, to the intent that liuing men may knowe, that the most High hath power ouer the kingdome of men, and giueth it to whomsoeuer he will, and appointeth ouer it the most abiect among men.
Cela a été décrété par la sentence des veillants; c’est la parole et la demande des saints, jusqu’à ce que les vivants sachent que le Très-Haut domine sur le royaume des hommes, et qu’il le donnera à quiconque il voudra, et qu’il y établira l’homme le plus humble.
18 This is the dreame, that I King Nebuchad-nezzar haue seene: therefore thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof: for all the wisemen of my kingdome are not able to shewe mee the interpretation: but thou art able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.
J’ai vu ce songe, moi, Nabuchodonosor, roi; toi donc, Baltassar, donnes-en promptement l’interprétation, parce que tous les sages de mon royaume ne peuvent m’en dire la signification; mais toi, tu le peux, parce que l’esprit des dieux saints est en toi.
19 Then Daniel (whose name was Belteshazzar) held his peace by the space of one houre, and his thoughts troubled him, and the King spake and said, Belteshazzar, let neither the dreame, nor the interpretation thereof trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and saide, My lord, the dreame be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies.
Alors Daniel, dont le nom est Baltassar, commença sans rien dire à penser en lui-même environ une heure; et ses pensées le troublaient. Mais, prenant la parole, le roi dit: Baltassar, que le songe et son interprétation ne te troublent point. Baltassar répondit, et dit: Mon Seigneur, que le songe soit pour ceux qui vous haïssent, et l’interprétation pour vos ennemis.
20 The tree that thou sawest, which was great and mightie, whose height reached vnto the heauen, and the sight thereof through all the world,
L’arbre que vous avez vu élevé et fort, dont la hauteur touchait au ciel, et dont la vue s’étendait sur toute la terre;
21 Whose leaues were faire and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meate for all, vnder the which the beastes of the fielde dwelt, and vpon whose branches the foules of the heauen did sit,
Et ses branches étaient très belles, et son fruit en très grande quantité, et en lui était la nourriture de tous; les bêtes de la campagne habitaient dessous, et sur ses branches demeuraient les oiseaux du ciel;
22 It is thou, O King, that art great and mightie: for thy greatnesse is growen, and reacheth vnto heauen, and thy dominion to the endes of the earth.
C’est vous, ô roi, qui êtes devenu grand et puissant; et votre grandeur s’est accrue, et elle est parvenue jusqu’au ciel, et votre puissance s’est étendue jusqu’aux extrémités de toute la terre.
23 Where as the King sawe a watchman, and an holy one, that came downe from heauen, and said, Hew downe the tree and destroy it, yet leaue the stumpe of the rootes thereof in the earth, and with a bande of yron and brasse binde it among the grasse of the fielde, and let it be wette with the dewe of heauen, and let his portion be with the beastes of the fielde, till seuen times passe ouer him,
Quant à ce que le roi a vu, un veillant et un saint descendre du ciel et dire: Coupez l’arbre par le pied et dispersez-le; cependant laissez le germe de ses racines dans la terre, et qu’il soit lié avec du fer et de l’airain parmi les herbes en plein air, et que de la rosée du ciel il soit arrosé, et qu’avec les bêtes féroces soit sa nourriture, jusqu’à ce que sept temps se soient renouvelés sur lui:
24 This is the interpretation, O King, and it is the decree of the most High, which is come vpon my lord the King,
Voici l’interprétation de la sentence du Très-Haut, qui atteint mon seigneur le roi.
25 That they shall driue thee from men, and thy dwelling shalbe with the beasts of the fielde: they shall make thee to eate grasse as the oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dewe of heauen: and seuen times shall passe ouer thee, till thou knowe, that the most High beareth rule ouer the kingdome of men, and giueth it to whom so euer he will.
On vous chassera loin des hommes, et avec les animaux et les bêtes féroces sera votre demeure, et vous mangerez du foin comme le bœuf, et de la rosée du ciel vous serez trempé; sept temps aussi se renouvelleront sur vous, jusqu’à ce que vous sachiez que le Très-Haut domine sur le royaume des hommes, et qu’il le donne à quiconque il veut,
26 Where as they sayd, that one should leaue the stumpe of the tree rootes, thy kingdome shall remaine vnto thee: after that, thou shalt knowe, that the heauens haue the rule.
Quant à ce qu’il a ordonné que le germe de ses racines, c’est-à-dire des racines de l’arbre, soit laissé; votre royaume vous restera, après que vous aurez reconnu que la puissance vient du ciel.
27 Wherefore, O King, let my counsell be acceptable vnto thee, and breake off thy sinnes by righteousnes, and thine iniquities by mercy toward the poore: lo, let there be an healing of thine errour.
À cause de cela, ô roi, que mon conseil vous soit agréable, et rachetez vos péchés par l’aumône, et vos iniquités par la miséricorde envers les pauvres; peut-être qu’il vous pardonnera vos offenses.
28 All these things shall come vpon the King Nebuchad-nezzar.
Toutes ces choses arrivèrent au roi Nabuchodonosor.
29 At the end of twelue moneths, he walked in the royall palace of Babel.
Après la fin de douze mois, il se promenait dans le palais de Babylone.
30 And the King spake and sayde, Is not this great Babel, that I haue built for the house of the kingdome by the might of my power, and for the honour of my maiestie?
Et le roi prit la parole, et dit: N’est-ce pas là cette grande Babylone que moi j’ai bâtie comme le siège de mon royaume, dans la force de ma puissance et dans ma brillante gloire?
31 While the worde was in the Kings mouth, a voyce came downe from heauen, saying, O King Nebuchad-nezzar, to thee be it spoken, Thy kingdome is departed from thee,
Et lorsque ces paroles étaient encore en la bouche du roi, une voix partit du ciel: Il t’est dit, ô Nabuchodonosor, roi: Ton empire passera loin de toi,
32 And they shall driue thee from men, and thy dwelling shalbe with the beastes of the fielde: they shall make thee to eate grasse, as the oxen, and seuen times shall passe ouer thee, vntill thou knowest, that the most High beareth rule ouer the kingdome of men, and giueth it vnto whomsoeuer he will.
Et d’entre les hommes on te chassera, et avec les animaux et les bêtes féroces sera ta demeure: tu mangeras du foin comme le bœuf, et sept temps se renouvelleront sur toi, jusqu’à ce que tu saches que le Très-Haut domine sur le royaume des hommes, et qu’il le donne à quiconque il veut.
33 The very same houre was this thing fulfilled vpon Nebuchad-nezzar, and hee was driuen from men, and did eate grasse as the oxen, and his body was wet with the dewe of heauen, till his heares were growen as eagles feathers, and his nailes like birds clawes.
À la même heure cette parole fut accomplie sur Nabuchodonosor, et d’entre les hommes il fut chassé, et il mangea du foin comme le bœuf, et de la rosée du ciel son corps fut couvert: jusqu’à ce que ses cheveux s’accrurent comme les plumes d’un aigle, et ses ongles comme les griffes des oiseaux.
34 And at the ende of these dayes I Nebuchad-nezzar lift vp mine eyes vnto heauen, and mine vnderstanding was restored vnto me, and I gaue thankes vnto the most High, and I praysed and honoured him that liueth for euer, whose power is an euerlasting power, and his kingdome is from generation to generation.
Après donc la fin des jours, moi, Nabuchodonosor, j’ai levé les yeux vers le ciel, et le sens m’a été rendu; et j’ai béni le Très-Haut, et j’ai loué et glorifié celui qui vit éternellement, parce que sa puissance est une puissance éternelle, et son royaume sera pour toutes les générations.
35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and according to his will he worketh in the armie of heauen, and in the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, nor say vnto him, What doest thou?
Et tous les habitants de la terre sont réputés devant lui comme un néant; il fait selon sa volonté, tant parmi les armées du ciel que parmi les habitants de la terre; il n’est personne qui résiste à sa main, et qui lui dise: Pourquoi avez-vous fait ainsi?
36 At the same time was mine vnderstanding restored vnto me, and I returned to the honour of my kingdome: my glory and my beautie was restored vnto me, and my counsellours and my princes sought vnto me, and I was established in my kingdome, and my glory was augmented toward me.
En ce même temps le sens me revint, et je rentrai dans les honneurs et l’éclat de mon royaume, ma première forme me fut rendue, et mes grands et mes magistrats me recherchèrent, et je fus rétabli dans mon royaume, et une plus grande magnificence me fut donnée par surcroît.
37 Now therefore I Nebuchad-nezzar prayse and extoll and magnifie the King of heauen, whose workes are all trueth, and his wayes iudgement, and those that walke in pride, he is able to abase.
Maintenant donc, moi, Nabuchodonosor, je loue et je magnifie et je glorifie le roi du ciel, parce que toutes ses œuvres sont vraies, et ses voies de vrais jugements, et qu’il peut humilier ceux qui marchent dans l’orgueil
