Daniel 4
1 Nebuchad-nezzar King vnto all people, nations and languages, that dwell in all the world, Peace be multiplied vnto you:
Le roi Nabuchodonosor dit à tous les peuples, à toutes les tribus, à tous les hommes de langues diverses: Que la paix se multiplie parmi vous.
2 I thought it good to declare the signes and wonders, that the hie God hath wrought toward me.
Les signes et les prodiges que vient d'accomplir devant moi le Dieu très- haut, il me plaît de vous annoncer en personne
3 How great are his signes, and how mightie are his wonders! his kingdome is an euerlasting kingdome, and his dominion is from generation to generation.
Combien ils sont grands et irrésistibles; son royaume est le royaume éternel, et sa puissance s'étend de génération en génération.
4 I Nebuchad-nezzar being at rest in mine house, and flourishing in my palace,
Moi, Nabuchodonosor, comme j'étais en paix et florissant dans mon palais,
5 Saw a dreame, which made me afraide, and the thoughtes vpon my bed, and the visions of mine head troubled me.
J'eus un songe, et il m'effraya, et je fus troublé sur ma couche, et les visions de ma tête me troublèrent.
6 Therefore made I a decree, that they should bring all the wise men of Babel before mee, that they might declare vnto me the interpretation of the dreame.
Et, de moi-même, je donnai ordre d'amener en ma présence tous les sages de Babylone, et qu'ils me fissent connaître l'interprétation de mon songe.
7 So came the inchanters, the astrologians, the Caldeans and the sothsayers, to whom I tolde the dreame, but they could not shew me the interpretation thereof,
Et les devins et les mages, les sorciers et les Chaldéens arrivèrent, et je dis mon songe devant eux, et ils ne m'en firent pas connaître l'interprétation;
8 Till at the last Daniel came before mee, (whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, which hath the spirite of the holy gods in him) and before him I tolde the dreame, saying,
Jusqu'à ce que vint Daniel, que l'on nommait Baltasar, selon le nom de mon dieu, et qui avait en lui l'Esprit-Saint de Dieu, et je lui dis:
9 O Belteshazzar, chiefe of the enchanters, because I know, that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell mee the visions of my dreame, that I haue seene and the interpretation thereof.
Baltasar, comme chef des devins, je sais que l'Esprit-Saint de Dieu est en toi, et que nul mystère pour toi n'est impénétrable; écoute donc la vision de mon songe, et dis-m'en l'interprétation.
10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed. And beholde, I sawe a tree in the middes of the earth and the height thereof was great:
Je regardais sur ma couche, et voilà qu'un arbre était au milieu de la terre, et sa hauteur était grande.
11 A great tree and strong, and the height thereof reached vnto heauen, and the sight thereof to the endes of all the earth.
Il crût encore et se fortifia, et sa cime arrivait jusqu'au ciel, et son tronc jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre.
12 The boughes thereof were faire and the fruite thereof much, and in it was meate for all: it made a shadow vnder it for the beastes of the fielde, and the foules of the heauen dwelt in the boughes thereof, and all flesh fedde of it.
Ses feuilles étaient belles, et ses fruits abondants; et l'aliment de tous les êtres se trouvait en lui; sous son ombre s'abritaient les bêtes sauvages, et sur ses rameaux les oiseaux du ciel faisaient leurs nids, et de lui toute chair se nourrissait.
13 I sawe in the visions of mine head vpon my bed, and beholde, a watchman and an holy one came downe from heauen,
J'étais attentif sur ma couche à cette vision de la nuit, et voilà qu'un veillant et un saint descendit des cieux.
14 And cried aloude, and said thus, Hew downe the tree, and breake off his branches: shake off his leaues, and scatter his fruite, that the beastes may flee from vnder it, and the foules from his branches.
Et, parlant à haute voix, il dit: Abattez l'arbre, arrachez ses rameaux, secouez ses feuilles, et dispersez ses fruits; que les bêtes soient chassées de dessous lui, et les oiseaux du ciel de ses branches.
15 Neuerthelesse leaue the stumpe of his rootes in the earth, and with a band of yron and brasse binde it among the grasse of the fielde, and let it be wet with the dewe of heauen, and let his portion be with the beastes among the grasse of the fielde.
Cependant laissez en terre la souche de ses racines; quant à lui, qu'il reste étendu en des chaînes de fer et d'airain, parmi l'herbe qui l'entoure, à la rosée du ciel; et qu'avec les bêtes il ait sa part de l'herbe de la terre.
16 Let his heart be changed from mans nature, and let a beasts heart be giuen vnto him, and let seuen times be passed ouer him.
Son cœur deviendra différent du cœur des hommes; et un cœur de bête lui sera donné; et sept fois les temps changeront sur lui.
17 The sentence is according to the decree of the watchmen, and according to the word of the holy ones: the demaunde was answered, to the intent that liuing men may knowe, that the most High hath power ouer the kingdome of men, and giueth it to whomsoeuer he will, and appointeth ouer it the most abiect among men.
Telle est la sentence du veillant et la parole des saints, afin que les vivants sachent que le Seigneur est le dominateur du royaume des hommes, et qu'il le donne à qui bon lui semblera, et qu'il élèvera pour le gouverner celui qui est en mépris parmi les hommes.
18 This is the dreame, that I King Nebuchad-nezzar haue seene: therefore thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof: for all the wisemen of my kingdome are not able to shewe mee the interpretation: but thou art able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.
Tel est le songe que j'ai eu, moi, le roi Nabuchodonosor, et toi, Baltasar, dis-m'en l'interprétation; car nul des sages de mon royaume ne peut me la donner; mais toi, Daniel, tu le peux, parce que l'Esprit-Saint de Dieu est en toi.
19 Then Daniel (whose name was Belteshazzar) held his peace by the space of one houre, and his thoughts troubled him, and the King spake and said, Belteshazzar, let neither the dreame, nor the interpretation thereof trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and saide, My lord, the dreame be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies.
Alors Daniel, surnommé Baltasar, réfléchit environ une heure, et ses pensées le troublèrent. Enfin Baltasar répondit: Seigneur, dit-il, que ton songe soit pour ceux qui te haïssent, et son interprétation pour tes ennemis!
20 The tree that thou sawest, which was great and mightie, whose height reached vnto the heauen, and the sight thereof through all the world,
L'arbre que tu as vu grand et fort, dont la cime allait au ciel, et le tronc sur toute la terre;
21 Whose leaues were faire and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meate for all, vnder the which the beastes of the fielde dwelt, and vpon whose branches the foules of the heauen did sit,
Dont les feuilles étaient florissantes et les fruits abondants, en qui se trouvait l'aliment de tous, et sous lequel s'abritaient les bêtes sauvages, tandis que les oiseaux du ciel faisaient leur nid dans ses rameaux;
22 It is thou, O King, that art great and mightie: for thy greatnesse is growen, and reacheth vnto heauen, and thy dominion to the endes of the earth.
Cet arbre, ô roi, c'est toi-même; car tu as grandi et tu t'es fortifié, et ta grandeur n'a cessé de croître, et elle est allée jusqu'au ciel, et ta domination jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre.
23 Where as the King sawe a watchman, and an holy one, that came downe from heauen, and said, Hew downe the tree and destroy it, yet leaue the stumpe of the rootes thereof in the earth, and with a bande of yron and brasse binde it among the grasse of the fielde, and let it be wette with the dewe of heauen, and let his portion be with the beastes of the fielde, till seuen times passe ouer him,
Or quand le roi a vu le veillant et le saint descendre du ciel, et que le saint a dit: Arrachez l'arbre, détruisez-le, mais laissez en terre la souche de ses racines; quant à lui, qu'il reste étendu en des chaînes de fer et d'airain, parmi l'herbe qui l'entoure, exposé à la rosée du ciel, et qu'il partage avec les bêtes l'herbe des champs, jusqu'à ce que les temps aient changé sept fois sur lui:
24 This is the interpretation, O King, and it is the decree of the most High, which is come vpon my lord the King,
Voici ce que cela signifie, ô roi, et c'est la sentence du Très-Haut, qui d'avance vient avertir le roi mon maître.
25 That they shall driue thee from men, and thy dwelling shalbe with the beasts of the fielde: they shall make thee to eate grasse as the oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dewe of heauen: and seuen times shall passe ouer thee, till thou knowe, that the most High beareth rule ouer the kingdome of men, and giueth it to whom so euer he will.
On t'exclura du commerce des hommes, et ta demeure sera parmi les bêtes sauvages, et l'on te donnera ta part de fourrage comme à un bœuf, et tu passeras les nuits à la rosée du ciel, et les temps changeront sept fois sur toi, jusqu'à ce que tu reconnaisses que le Très Haut est le maître du royaume des hommes, et qu'il le donne à qui bon lui semble.
26 Where as they sayd, that one should leaue the stumpe of the tree rootes, thy kingdome shall remaine vnto thee: after that, thou shalt knowe, that the heauens haue the rule.
Et puisqu'il a été dit: Laissez en terre la souche des racines de l'arbre, ta royauté subsistera, après que tu auras reconnu la puissance du ciel.
27 Wherefore, O King, let my counsell be acceptable vnto thee, and breake off thy sinnes by righteousnes, and thine iniquities by mercy toward the poore: lo, let there be an healing of thine errour.
C'est pourquoi, ô roi, que mon conseil te soit agréable; rachète tes péchés par des aumônes, et tes iniquités par la compassion pour les indigents, et Dieu peut-être sera longanime à tes offenses.
28 All these things shall come vpon the King Nebuchad-nezzar.
Or les choses suivantes arrivèrent au roi Nabuchodonosor:
29 At the end of twelue moneths, he walked in the royall palace of Babel.
Après le douzième mois, comme il se promenait dans son palais royal, en Babylone,
30 And the King spake and sayde, Is not this great Babel, that I haue built for the house of the kingdome by the might of my power, and for the honour of my maiestie?
Le roi prit la parole, et dit: N'est-ce point là Babylone la grande, que j'ai bâtie pour être ma résidence royale, dans ma force et ma puissance, en l'honneur de ma gloire?
31 While the worde was in the Kings mouth, a voyce came downe from heauen, saying, O King Nebuchad-nezzar, to thee be it spoken, Thy kingdome is departed from thee,
Cette parole était encore dans la bouche du roi, quand une voix vint du ciel, disant: À toi, roi Nabuchodonosor, il est dit: Ton royaume t'échappe.
32 And they shall driue thee from men, and thy dwelling shalbe with the beastes of the fielde: they shall make thee to eate grasse, as the oxen, and seuen times shall passe ouer thee, vntill thou knowest, that the most High beareth rule ouer the kingdome of men, and giueth it vnto whomsoeuer he will.
On va te chasser loin des hommes, et ta demeure sera parmi les bêtes sauvages; on te donnera du foin comme à un bœuf, et les temps changeront sept fois sur toi, jusqu'à ce que tu reconnaisses que le Très-Haut est le maître du royaume des hommes, et qu'il le donnera à qui bon lui semble.
33 The very same houre was this thing fulfilled vpon Nebuchad-nezzar, and hee was driuen from men, and did eate grasse as the oxen, and his body was wet with the dewe of heauen, till his heares were growen as eagles feathers, and his nailes like birds clawes.
À l'heure même, cette parole sur Nabuchodonosor s'accomplit: il fut chassé loin des hommes, il mangea de l'herbe comme un bœuf, et son corps fut baigné par la rosée du ciel, jusqu'à ce que ses cheveux eussent crû comme la crinière d'un lion, et ses ongles comme les griffes des oiseaux.
34 And at the ende of these dayes I Nebuchad-nezzar lift vp mine eyes vnto heauen, and mine vnderstanding was restored vnto me, and I gaue thankes vnto the most High, and I praysed and honoured him that liueth for euer, whose power is an euerlasting power, and his kingdome is from generation to generation.
Et à la fin des jours moi, Nabuchodonosor, je levai les yeux au ciel, et les pensées me revinrent, et je bénis le Très-Haut, et je louai l'Éternel, et je lui rendis gloire, parce que sa puissance est inébranlable, et son royaume pour toutes les générations.
35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and according to his will he worketh in the armie of heauen, and in the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, nor say vnto him, What doest thou?
Et tous ceux qui habitent la terre sont comptés pour rien. En l'armée du ciel et parmi les habitants de la terre, il fait à sa volonté, et nul ne peut résister à sa puissance, ni lui dire: Qu'avez-vous fait?
36 At the same time was mine vnderstanding restored vnto me, and I returned to the honour of my kingdome: my glory and my beautie was restored vnto me, and my counsellours and my princes sought vnto me, and I was established in my kingdome, and my glory was augmented toward me.
Au même instant les pensées me revinrent, et je rentrai dans les honneurs de ma royauté, et ma forme me fut rendue, et mes princes et mes grands me recherchèrent, et une plus grande magnificence me fut rendue.
37 Now therefore I Nebuchad-nezzar prayse and extoll and magnifie the King of heauen, whose workes are all trueth, and his wayes iudgement, and those that walke in pride, he is able to abase.
Maintenant donc, moi, Nabuchodonosor, je louerai et j'exalterai, et je glorifierai le Roi du ciel, parce que toutes ses œuvres sont vraies, que ses sentiers sont la justice, et qu'il est en son pouvoir d'humilier tous ceux qui marchent dans leur orgueil.
