Daniel 4
1 Nebuchad-nezzar King vnto all people, nations and languages, that dwell in all the world, Peace be multiplied vnto you:
"Le roi Nabuchodonosor à toutes les nations, à tous les peuples et idiomes, qui habitent sur toute la terre: Grande prospérité à vous!
2 I thought it good to declare the signes and wonders, that the hie God hath wrought toward me.
Les miracles et les prodiges que le Dieu suprême a accomplis à mon égard, j’ai trouvé bon de les faire connaître.
3 How great are his signes, and how mightie are his wonders! his kingdome is an euerlasting kingdome, and his dominion is from generation to generation.
Combien grands sont ses miracles et puissants ses prodiges! Son règne est un règne éternel, et sa domination s’étend d’âge en âge.
4 I Nebuchad-nezzar being at rest in mine house, and flourishing in my palace,
Moi, Nabuchodonosor, j’étais tranquille dans ma maison et florissant dans mon palais,
5 Saw a dreame, which made me afraide, and the thoughtes vpon my bed, and the visions of mine head troubled me.
lorsque j’eus un songe qui m’effraya: les pensées qui me hantèrent sur ma couche et les visions de mon esprit m’inspirèrent de l’épouvante.
6 Therefore made I a decree, that they should bring all the wise men of Babel before mee, that they might declare vnto me the interpretation of the dreame.
Et j’émis l’ordre qu’on introduisît auprès de moi tous les sages de Babylone, afin qu’ils me fissent connaître l’explication du songe.
7 So came the inchanters, the astrologians, the Caldeans and the sothsayers, to whom I tolde the dreame, but they could not shew me the interpretation thereof,
Alors se présentèrent les devins, les magiciens, les astrologues et les mages; je leur exposai le songe, mais ils ne purent m’en indiquer la signification.
8 Till at the last Daniel came before mee, (whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, which hath the spirite of the holy gods in him) and before him I tolde the dreame, saying,
En dernier lieu se présenta, devant moi Daniel, surnommé Beltchaçar, du nom de mon Dieu, et en qui est l’esprit du Dieu saint; je lui racontai le songe:
9 O Belteshazzar, chiefe of the enchanters, because I know, that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell mee the visions of my dreame, that I haue seene and the interpretation thereof.
"Beltchaçar, chef des devins, en qui, je le sais, respire l’esprit du Dieu saint et que ne dépasse aucun mystère, écoute ce que j’ai vu en songe et dis-m’en l’explication.
10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed. And beholde, I sawe a tree in the middes of the earth and the height thereof was great:
Telle était la vision de mon esprit sur ma couche: je regardais, et voilà qu’un arbre se dressait sur la terre, d’une hauteur énorme.
11 A great tree and strong, and the height thereof reached vnto heauen, and the sight thereof to the endes of all the earth.
L’Arbre était grand et vigoureux, son sommet atteignait le ciel, et on l’apercevait de l’extrémité de toute la terre.
12 The boughes thereof were faire and the fruite thereof much, and in it was meate for all: it made a shadow vnder it for the beastes of the fielde, and the foules of the heauen dwelt in the boughes thereof, and all flesh fedde of it.
Son feuillage était beau et ses fruits abondants; il fournissait de la nourriture à tous. A son ombre s’abritaient les bêtes des champs, dans ses branches nichaient les oiseaux du ciel, et tous les êtres s’alimentaient de lui.
13 I sawe in the visions of mine head vpon my bed, and beholde, a watchman and an holy one came downe from heauen,
Je regardais dans la vision de mon esprit sur ma couche, et voilà qu’un ange, un saint descendait du ciel.
14 And cried aloude, and said thus, Hew downe the tree, and breake off his branches: shake off his leaues, and scatter his fruite, that the beastes may flee from vnder it, and the foules from his branches.
Il cria avec force et parla ainsi: Coupez l’arbre, abattez ses branches, faites tomber son feuillage et dispersez ses fruits! Que les bêtes s’enfuient de son ombrage et les oiseaux du ciel de ses branches!
15 Neuerthelesse leaue the stumpe of his rootes in the earth, and with a band of yron and brasse binde it among the grasse of the fielde, and let it be wet with the dewe of heauen, and let his portion be with the beastes among the grasse of the fielde.
Seulement laissez subsister dans le sol la souche de ses racines, entourée de chaines de fer et d’airain, au milieu de la verdure des champs. Qu’il soit humecté par la rosée du ciel et qu’avec les bêtes il prenne sa part de l’herbe de da terre!
16 Let his heart be changed from mans nature, and let a beasts heart be giuen vnto him, and let seuen times be passed ouer him.
Qu’on lui enlève son cœur d’homme et qu’on lui donne un cœur d’animal, et qu’ainsi sept époques passent sur lui!
17 The sentence is according to the decree of the watchmen, and according to the word of the holy ones: the demaunde was answered, to the intent that liuing men may knowe, that the most High hath power ouer the kingdome of men, and giueth it to whomsoeuer he will, and appointeth ouer it the most abiect among men.
Tel est l’arrêt prononcé par la volonté des anges et la résolution décrétée par les saints, aux seules fins que les vivants reconnaissent que le Très-Haut domine sur la royauté des hommes, qu’il la donne à qui il veut, et qu’il y élève le plus humble des mortels.
18 This is the dreame, that I King Nebuchad-nezzar haue seene: therefore thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof: for all the wisemen of my kingdome are not able to shewe mee the interpretation: but thou art able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.
Voilà le songe que j’ai eu, moi le roi Nabuchodonosor; mais toi, Beltchaçar, dis-moi ce qu’il signifie, puisque tous les sages de mon royaume sont incapables de m’en donner l’explication, tandis que toi tu en es capable, l’esprit des Dieux saints étant en toi.
19 Then Daniel (whose name was Belteshazzar) held his peace by the space of one houre, and his thoughts troubled him, and the King spake and said, Belteshazzar, let neither the dreame, nor the interpretation thereof trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and saide, My lord, the dreame be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies.
AIors Daniel, surnommé Beltchaçar, resta environ une heure plongé dans la stupeur, terrifié par ses pensées; mais le roi prit la parole et dit: "Beltchaçar, ne te laisse pas effrayer par le songe et par sa signification!" Et Beltchaçar répondit: "Mon seigneur, puisse ce songe s’appliquer à tes ennemis et sa signification à tes adversaires!
20 The tree that thou sawest, which was great and mightie, whose height reached vnto the heauen, and the sight thereof through all the world,
L’Arbre que tu as vu, qui était grand et vigoureux, dont le sommet atteignait le ciel et qu’on apercevait de l’extrémité de la terre,
21 Whose leaues were faire and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meate for all, vnder the which the beastes of the fielde dwelt, and vpon whose branches the foules of the heauen did sit,
l’arbre dont le feuillage était beau et les fruits abondants, qui fournissait de la nourriture à tous, à l’ombre duquel habitaient les bêtes des champs et dont les branches servaient d’abri aux oiseaux du ciel,
22 It is thou, O King, that art great and mightie: for thy greatnesse is growen, and reacheth vnto heauen, and thy dominion to the endes of the earth.
c’est toi-même, ô roi, qui es grand et puissant, dont la grandeur s’est accrue jusqu’à atteindre le ciel et dont le pouvoir s’est étendu jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre!
23 Where as the King sawe a watchman, and an holy one, that came downe from heauen, and said, Hew downe the tree and destroy it, yet leaue the stumpe of the rootes thereof in the earth, and with a bande of yron and brasse binde it among the grasse of the fielde, and let it be wette with the dewe of heauen, and let his portion be with the beastes of the fielde, till seuen times passe ouer him,
Et si le roi a vu un ange, un saint descendre du ciel et s’écrier: Coupez l’arbre et détruisez-le; seulement laissez subsister dans le sol la souche de ses racines, entourée de chaines de fer et d’airain, au milieu de la verdure des champs; qu’il soit humecté par la rosée du ciel et qu’il partage le sort des bêtes des champs, jusqu’à ce que sept époques aient passé sur lui,
24 This is the interpretation, O King, and it is the decree of the most High, which is come vpon my lord the King,
voici ce que cela signifie, et tel est l’arrêt du Très-Haut qui atteint mon seigneur le roi:
25 That they shall driue thee from men, and thy dwelling shalbe with the beasts of the fielde: they shall make thee to eate grasse as the oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dewe of heauen: and seuen times shall passe ouer thee, till thou knowe, that the most High beareth rule ouer the kingdome of men, and giueth it to whom so euer he will.
On va te chasser du milieu des hommes, et ta demeure sera avec les bêtes des champs; comme aux bœufs on te donnera de l’herbe pour nourriture, on t’humectera par la rosée du ciel, et sept époques passeront ainsi sur toi, jusqu’à ce que tu reconnaisses que le Très-Haut domine sur la royauté des hommes et qu’il la donne à qui il veut.
26 Where as they sayd, that one should leaue the stumpe of the tree rootes, thy kingdome shall remaine vnto thee: after that, thou shalt knowe, that the heauens haue the rule.
Et si l’on a dit de laisser subsister la souche des racines de l’arbre, c’est que ta royauté te sera tenue en réserve pour le moment où tu auras reconnu que le ciel est souverain maître.
27 Wherefore, O King, let my counsell be acceptable vnto thee, and breake off thy sinnes by righteousnes, and thine iniquities by mercy toward the poore: lo, let there be an healing of thine errour.
C’Est pourquoi, ô roi, puisse mon conseil t’agréer: Rachète tes péchés par la charité et tes iniquités par la pitié envers les pauvres, si tu veux que ta prospérité se prolonge."
28 All these things shall come vpon the King Nebuchad-nezzar.
Tout cela arriva au roi Nabuchodonosor:
29 At the end of twelue moneths, he walked in the royall palace of Babel.
Au bout de douze mois, il se promenait sur le haut du palais de la royauté à Babylone.
30 And the King spake and sayde, Is not this great Babel, that I haue built for the house of the kingdome by the might of my power, and for the honour of my maiestie?
Alors le roi s’écria: "N’Est-ce pas là Babylone la grande, que j’ai édifiée pour en faire une résidence royale, grâce à ma formidable puissance et pour la gloire de ma majesté?"
31 While the worde was in the Kings mouth, a voyce came downe from heauen, saying, O King Nebuchad-nezzar, to thee be it spoken, Thy kingdome is departed from thee,
Il n’avait pas encore cessé de parler qu’une voix retentit du haut du ciel: "On t’annonce, roi Nabuchodonosor, que la royauté t’est enlevée.
32 And they shall driue thee from men, and thy dwelling shalbe with the beastes of the fielde: they shall make thee to eate grasse, as the oxen, and seuen times shall passe ouer thee, vntill thou knowest, that the most High beareth rule ouer the kingdome of men, and giueth it vnto whomsoeuer he will.
On va t’expulser de la société des hommes, et ta demeure sera avec les bêtes des champs; on te fera manger de l’herbe comme aux bœufs, et sept époques passeront sur toi, jusqu’à ce que tu reconnaisses que le Très-Haut est le maître de la royauté des hommes et qu’il la donne à qui il veut."
33 The very same houre was this thing fulfilled vpon Nebuchad-nezzar, and hee was driuen from men, and did eate grasse as the oxen, and his body was wet with the dewe of heauen, till his heares were growen as eagles feathers, and his nailes like birds clawes.
Sur l’heure, cette parole se réalisa pour Nabuchodonosor: il fut chassé du milieu des hommes, mangea de l’herbe comme les bœufs, son corps fut humecté par la rosée du ciel, au point qu’il lui poussa des poils pareils aux plumes des aigles et des ongles comme des griffes d’oiseaux.
34 And at the ende of these dayes I Nebuchad-nezzar lift vp mine eyes vnto heauen, and mine vnderstanding was restored vnto me, and I gaue thankes vnto the most High, and I praysed and honoured him that liueth for euer, whose power is an euerlasting power, and his kingdome is from generation to generation.
"Mais au terme des jours fixés, moi, Nabuchodonosor, je levai les yeux au ciel, et la raison me revint; je bénis le Très-Haut, je louai et exaltai celui qui vit éternellement, dont la domination dure sans fin et dont la royauté s’étend d’âge en âge.
35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and according to his will he worketh in the armie of heauen, and in the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, nor say vnto him, What doest thou?
Tous les habitants de la terre sont comptés comme rien devant lui, il agit à sa volonté avec l’armée du ciel et les hôtes de la terre; il n’est personne qui fasse obstacle à son pouvoir et lui dise: "Que fais-tu?"
36 At the same time was mine vnderstanding restored vnto me, and I returned to the honour of my kingdome: my glory and my beautie was restored vnto me, and my counsellours and my princes sought vnto me, and I was established in my kingdome, and my glory was augmented toward me.
Dès lors, la raison me revint, l’éclat de ma royauté, ma majesté et ma splendeur me furent restitués; mes conseillers et mes grands me recherchèrent, je fus rétabli dans ma royauté, et ma puissance s’accrut encore.
37 Now therefore I Nebuchad-nezzar prayse and extoll and magnifie the King of heauen, whose workes are all trueth, and his wayes iudgement, and those that walke in pride, he is able to abase.
Maintenant, moi, Nabuchodonosor, je loue, exalte et glorifie le roi du ciel, dont tous les actes sont vérité et les voies justice, et qui peut abaisser ceux qui se comportent avec orgueil.
