Daniel 1
1 In the thirde yeere of the reigne of Iehoiakim king of Iudah, came Nebuchad-nezzar King of Babel vnto Ierusalem and besieged it.
Il terzo anno del regno di Joiakim, re di Giuda, Nebucadnetsar, re di Babilonia, venne contro Gerusalemme, e l’assediò.
2 And ye Lord gaue Iehoiakim king of Iudah into his hand; with parte of the vessels of the house of God, which he caryed into the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and he brought the vessels into his gods treasurie.
Il Signore gli diede nelle mani Joiakim, re di Giuda, e una parte degli utensili della casa di Dio; e Nebucadnetsar portò gli utensili nel paese di Scinear, nella casa del suo dio, e li mise nella casa del tesoro del suo dio.
3 And the King spake vnto Ashpenaz the master of his Eunuches, that he shoulde bring certeine of the children of Israel, of the Kings seede, and of the princes:
E il re disse a Ashpenaz, capo de’ suoi eunuchi, di menargli alcuni de’ figliuoli d’Israele di stirpe reale e di famiglie nobili,
4 Children in whome was no blemish, but well fauoured, and instruct in all wisedome, and well seene in knowledge, and able to vtter knowledge, and such as were able to stande in the kings palace, and whome they might teach the learning, and the tongue of the Caldeans.
giovani senza difetti fisici, belli d’aspetto, dotati d’ogni sorta di talenti, istruiti e intelligenti, tali che avessero attitudine a stare nel palazzo del re; e d’insegnar loro la letteratura e la lingua de’ Caldei.
5 And the King appointed them prouision euery day of a portion of the Kings meate, and and of the wine, which he dranke, so nourishing them three yeere, that at the ende thereof, they might stande before the King.
Il re assegnò loro una porzione giornaliera delle vivande della mensa reale, e del vino ch’egli beveva; e disse di mantenerli per tre anni, dopo i quali sarebbero passati al servizio del re.
6 Nowe among these were certeine of the children of Iudah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.
Or fra questi c’erano, di tra i figliuoli di Giuda, Daniele, Hanania, Mishael e Azaria;
7 Vnto whome the chiefe of the Eunuches gaue other names: for hee called Daniel, Belteshazzar, and Hananiah, Shadrach, and Mishael, Meshach, and Azariah, Abednego.
e il capo degli eunuchi diede loro altri nomi: a Daniele pose nome Beltsatsar; ad Hanania, Shadrac; a Mishael, Meshac, e ad Azaria, Abed-nego.
8 But Daniel had determined in his heart, that hee woulde not defile him selfe with the portion of the Kings meate, nor with the wine which he dranke: therefore he required the chiefe of the Eunuches that he might not defile himselfe.
E Daniele prese in cuor suo la risoluzione di non contaminarsi con le vivande del re e col vino che il re beveva; e chiese al capo degli eunuchi di non obbligarlo a contaminarsi;
9 (Nowe God had brought Daniel into fauour, and tender loue with the chiefe of the Eunuches)
e Dio fece trovare a Daniele grazia e compassione presso il capo degli eunuchi.
10 And the chiefe of the Eunuches sayd vnto Daniel, I feare my lord the King, who hath appointed your meate and your drinke: therefore if he see your faces worse liking then the other children, which are of your sort, then shall you make me lose mine head vnto the King.
E il capo degli eunuchi disse a Daniele: “Io temo il re, mio signore, il quale ha fissato il vostro cibo e le vostre bevande; e perché vedrebb’egli il vostro volto più triste di quello dei giovani della vostra medesima età? Voi mettereste in pericolo la mia testa presso il re”.
11 Then sayd Daniel to Melzar, whome the chiefe of the Eunuches had set ouer Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
Allora Daniele disse al maggiordomo, al quale il capo degli eunuchi aveva affidato la cura di Daniele, di Hanania, di Mishael e d’Azaria:
12 Proue thy seruants, I beseeche thee, ten dayes, and let them giue vs pulse to eate, and water to drinke.
“Ti prego, fa’ coi tuoi servi una prova di dieci giorni, e ci siano dati de’ legumi per mangiare, e dell’acqua per bere;
13 Then let our countenances bee looked vpon before thee, and the countenances of the children that eate of the portion of the Kings meate: and as thou seest, deale with thy seruantes.
poi ti si faccia vedere l’aspetto nostro e l’aspetto de’ giovani che mangiano le vivande del re; e secondo quel che vedrai, ti regolerai coi tuoi servi”.
14 So hee consented to them in this matter, an proued them ten dayes.
Quegli accordò loro quanto domandavano, e li mise alla prova per dieci giorni.
15 And at the end of ten dayes, their countenances appeared fayrer, and in better liking then all the childrens, which did eate the portion of the Kings meate.
E alla fine de’ dieci giorni, essi avevano migliore aspetto ed erano più grassi di tutti i giovani che aveano mangiato le vivande del re.
16 Thus Melzar tooke away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drinke, and gaue them pulse.
Così il maggiordomo portò via il cibo e il vino ch’eran loro destinati, e dette loro de’ legumi.
17 As for these foure children, God gaue them knowledge, and vnderstanding in al learning and wisedome: also he gaue Daniel vnderstanding of all visions and dreames.
E a tutti questi quattro giovani Iddio dette conoscenza e intelligenza in tutta la letteratura, e sapienza; e Daniele s’intendeva d’ogni sorta di visioni e di sogni.
18 Nowe when the time was expired, that the King had appoynted to bring them in, the chiefe of the Eunuches brought them before Nebuchad-nezzar.
E alla fine del tempo fissato dal re perché que’ giovani gli fossero menati, il capo degli eunuchi li presentò a Nebucadnetsar.
19 And the King communed with them: and among them al was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stoode they before the king.
Il re parlò con loro; e fra tutti que’ giovani non se ne trovò alcuno che fosse come Daniele, Hanania, Mishael e Azaria; e questi furono ammessi al servizio del re.
20 And in all matters of wisedome, and vnderstanding that the King enquired of them, hee founde them tenne times better then all the inchanters and astrologians, that were in all his realme.
E su tutti i punti che richiedevano sapienza e intelletto, e sui quali il re li interrogasse, il re li trovava dieci volte superiori a tutti i magi ed astrologi ch’erano in tutto il suo regno.
21 And Daniel was vnto the first yeere of king Cyrus.
Così continuò Daniele fino al primo anno del re Ciro.
