Amos 8

1 Thus hath the Lord God shewed vnto me, and behold, a basket of summer fruite.

Ceci est la vision que m'a envoyé le Seigneur Dieu; voilà un vase d'oiseleur à la glu.

2 And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I sayd, A basket of sommer fruite. Then sayd the Lord vnto me, The ende is come vpon my people of Israel, I wil passe by them no more.

Et le Seigneur me dit: Que vois-tu, Amos? et je dis: Un vase d'oiseleur à la glu; et le Seigneur me dit: La fin de Mon peuple d'Israël est arrivée; Je ne continuerai plus de Me montrer à lui.

3 And the songs of the Temple shalbe howlings in that day, saith the Lord God: many dead bodies shalbe in euery place: they shall cast them forth with silence.

Et en ce jour-là les lambris du temple pousseront des cris de douleur, dit le Seigneur. Une multitude d'hommes tomberont en tous lieux; et J'étendrai sur eux le silence.

4 Heare this, O yee that swallowe vp the poore, that ye may make the needie of the lande to fayle,

Écoutez donc ces choses, vous qui le matin opprimez l'indigent, et qui foulez aux pieds les pauvres de la terre,

5 Saying, When will the newe moneth bee gone, that we may sell corne? and the Sabbath, that we may set forth wheate, and make the Ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifie the weights by deceit?

disant: Quand donc le mois sera-t-il écoulé pour que nous vendions? Quand finira le sabbat pour que nous ouvrions nos greniers, que nous fassions petite mesure, que nous augmentions les poids et faussions le balance;

6 That we may buy the poore for siluer, and the needie for shooes: yea, and sell the refuse of the wheate.

pour que nous achetions le pauvre à prix d'argent; l'indigent pour des sandales, et que nous trafiquions sur toutes les denrées?

7 The Lord hath sworne by the excellencie of Iaakob, Surely I will neuer forget any of their workes.

Le Seigneur fait serment de punir l'orgueil de Jacob: Nulle de vos œuvres, en Ma victoire, ne sera oubliée.

8 Shall not the lande tremble for this, and euery one mourne, that dwelleth therein? and it shall rise vp wholy as a flood, and it shall bee cast out, and drowned as by the flood of Egypt.

Et n'est-ce pas à cause de ces choses que la terre sera troublée, que tous ceux qui l'habitent seront dans la douleur; et que la destruction montera comme le fleuve d'Égypte, et descendra comme lui?

9 And in that day, saith the Lord God, I will euen cause the sunne to go downe at noone: and I will darken the earth in the cleare day.

En ce jour-là ceci arrivera, dit le Seigneur Maître: Le soleil se couchera à Midi, et sur la terre, la lumière fera place aux ténèbres,

10 And I will turne your feastes into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation: and I will bring sackcloth vpon all loynes, and baldnes vpon euery head: and I will make it as the mourning of an onely sonne, and the ende thereof as a bitter day.

et Je changerai vos fêtes en deuil, et tous vos cantiques en lamentations; et je ceindrai vos reins de cilices, et toute tête deviendra chauve; et Israël pleurera, comme on pleure un bien-aimé, et ceux qui l'accompagneront souffriront comme en un jour de douleurs.

11 Beholde, the dayes come, sayeth the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the lande, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the word of the Lord.

Voilà que ces jours arrivent, dit le Seigneur, et J'enverrai la famine sur la terre, non la disette de pain et d'eau, mais la soif d'entendre la parole du Seigneur.

12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the North euen vnto the East shall they run to and from to seeke the worde of the Lord, and shall not finde it.

Et d'une mer à l'autre les hommes seront agités, et du nord au levant ils courront, cherchant la parole du Seigneur, et ils ne la trouveront pas.

13 In that day shall the faire virgines and the yong men perish for thirst.

En ce jour-là, les vierges les plus belles et les jeunes hommes tomberont de soif.

14 They that sweare by the sinne of Samaria, and that say, Thy God, O Dan, liueth, and the maner of Beer-sheba liueth, euen they shall fall, and neuer rise vp againe.

Ceux qui jurent par la propitiation de Samarie, et disent: Vive ton Dieu, Dan! vive ton Dieu, Bersabée! ceux-là tomberont et ne se relèveront plus.
