Acts 1
1 I have made the former treatise, O Theophilus, of al that Jesus began to doe and teach,
Théophile, j’ai raconté, dans mon premier livre, toute la suite des actions et des enseignements de Jésus,
2 Vntill the day that hee was taken vp, after that hee through the holy Ghost, had giuen commandements vnto the Apostles, whome hee had chosen:
jusqu’au jour où, après avoir donné, par l’Esprit-Saint, ses instructions aux Apôtres qu’il avait choisis, il fut enlevé au ciel.
3 To whome also he presented himselfe aliue after that he had suffered, by many infallible tokens, being seene of them by the space of fourtie daies, and speaking of those thinges which appertaine to the kingdome of God.
À eux aussi, après sa passion, il s’était montré plein de vie, leur en donnant des preuves nombreuses, leur apparaissant pendant quarante jours, et les entretenant du royaume de Dieu.
4 And when he had gathered them together, he commanded them, that they should not depart from Hierusalem, but to waite for the promise of the Father, which sayde hee, yee haue heard of me.
Un jour qu’il était à table avec eux, il leur recommanda de ne pas s’éloigner de Jérusalem, mais d’attendre ce que le Père avait promis, « ce que, leur dit-il, vous avez appris de ma bouche;
5 For Iohn in deede baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the holy Ghost within these fewe daies.
car Jean a baptisé dans l’eau, mais vous, sous peu de jours, vous serez baptisés dans l’Esprit-Saint. »
6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore the kingdome to Israel?
Eux donc, étant réunis, lui demandèrent: « Seigneur, le temps est-il venu où vous rétablirez le royaume d’Israël? »
7 And hee saide vnto them, It is not for you to know the times, or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his owne power,
Il leur répondit: « Ce n’est pas à vous de connaître les temps ni les moments que le Père a fixés de sa propre autorité.
8 But yee shall receiue power of the holy Ghost, when he shall come on you: and ye shalbe witnesses vnto me both in Hierusalem and in all Iudea, and in Samaria, and vnto the vttermost part of the earth.
Mais lorsque le Saint-Esprit descendra sur vous, vous serez revêtus de force et vous me rendrez témoignage à Jérusalem, dans toute la Judée, dans la Samarie, et jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre. »
9 And when he had spoken these things, while they behelde, he was taken vp: for a cloude tooke him vp out of their sight.
Après qu’il eut ainsi parlé, il fut élevé en leur présence, et une nuée le déroba à leurs yeux.
10 And while they looked stedfastly towarde heauen, as hee went, beholde, two men stoode by them in white apparell,
Et comme ils avaient leurs regards fixés vers le ciel pendant qu’il s’éloignait, voici que deux hommes parurent auprès d’eux, vêtus de blanc,
11 Which also sayde, Yee men of Galile, why stande yee gasing into heauen? This Iesus which is taken vp from you into heauen, shall so come, as yee haue seene him goe into heauen.
et dirent: « Hommes de Galilée, pourquoi vous arrêtez-vous à regarder au ciel? Ce Jésus qui, du milieu de vous, a été enlevé au ciel, en viendra de la même manière que vous l’avez vu monter. »
12 Then returned they vnto Hierusalem from the mount that is called the mount of Oliues, which is neere to Hierusalem, being from it a Sabbath daies iourney.
Ils revinrent alors à Jérusalem, de la montagne appelée des Oliviers, laquelle est près de Jérusalem, à la distance du chemin d’un jour de sabbat.
13 And when they were come in, they went vp into an vpper chamber, where abode both Peter and Iames, and Iohn, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartlemew, and Matthewe, Iames the sonne of Alpheus, and Simon Zelotes, and Iudas Iames brother.
Quand ils furent arrivés, ils montèrent dans le cénacle, où ils se tenaient d’ordinaire: c’étaient Pierre et Jean, Jacques et André, Philippe et Thomas, Barthélemy et Matthieu, Jacques, fils d’Alphée, et Simon le Zélé, et Jude, frère de Jacques.
14 These all continued with one accorde in prayer and supplication with the women, and Marie the mother of Iesus, and with his brethren.
Tous, dans un même esprit, persévéraient dans la prière, avec quelques femmes et Marie, mère de Jésus, et ses frères.
15 And in those dayes Peter stoode vp in the middes of the disciples, and sayde (nowe the nomber of names that were in one place were about an hundreth and twentie.)
En ces jours-là, Pierre se levant au milieu des frères (ils étaient réunis au nombre d’environ cent vingt), leur dit:
16 Yee men and brethren, this scripture must needes haue beene fulfilled, which the holy Ghost by the mouth of Dauid spake before of Iudas, which was guide to them that tooke Iesus.
« Mes frères, il fallait que s’accomplît ce que le Saint-Esprit, dans l’Ecriture, a prédit par la bouche de David au sujet de Judas, le guide de ceux qui ont arrêté Jésus;
17 For hee was nombred with vs, and had obteined fellowship in this ministration.
car il était un d’entre nous, et il avait part à notre ministère.
18 He therefore hath purchased a field with the reward of iniquitie: and when he had throwen downe himselfe headlong, hee brast asunder in the middes, and all his bowels gushed out.
(Cet homme acquit un champ avec le salaire de son crime, et s’étant précipité en avant, se rompit par le milieu, et toutes ses entrailles se répandirent.
19 And it is knowen vnto all the inhabitants of Hierusalem, in so much, that that field is called in their owne language, Aceldama, That is, the field of blood.
Ce fait est si connu de tous les habitants de Jérusalem, que ce champ a été nommé dans leur langue Haceldama, c’est-à-dire champ du sang.)
20 For it is written in the booke of Psalmes, Let his habitation be void, and let no man dwel therein: also, Let another take his charge.
Il est écrit, en effet, dans le livre des Psaumes: Que sa demeure devienne déserte, et que personne ne l’habite! Et ailleurs: Qu’un autre prenne sa charge!
21 Wherefore of these men which haue companied with vs, all the time that the Lord Iesus was conuersant among vs,
Il faut donc que, parmi les hommes qui nous ont accompagnés tout le temps que le Seigneur Jésus a vécu avec nous,
22 Beginning from the baptisme of Iohn vnto the day that hee was taken vp from vs, must one of them bee made a witnesse with vs of his resurrection.
à partir du baptême de Jean jusqu’au jour où il a été enlevé du milieu de nous, il y en ait un qui devienne avec nous témoin de sa résurrection. »
23 And they presented two, Ioseph called Barsabas, whose surname was Iustus, and Matthias.
Ils en présentèrent deux: Joseph, appelé Barsabas et surnommé le juste, et Mathias.
24 And they praied, saying, Thou Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shewe whether of these two thou hast chosen,
Et s’étant mis en prière, ils dirent: « Seigneur, vous qui connaissez le cœur de tous, indiquez lequel de ces deux vous avez choisi
25 That he may take the roume of this ministration and Apostleship, from which Iudas hath gone astray, to goe to his owne place.
pour occuper dans ce ministère de l’apostolat, la place que Judas a laissée par son crime pour s’en aller en son lieu. »
26 Then they gaue foorth their lottes: and the lotte fell on Matthias, and hee was by a common consent counted with the eleuen Apostles.
On tira leurs noms au sort: et le sort tomba sur Mathias, qui fut associé aux onze Apôtres.
