2 Samuel 24
1 And the wrath of the Lord was againe kindled against Israel, and he moued Dauid against them, in that he saide, Goe, number Israel and Iudah.
La colère du Seigneur s'enflamma encore contre Israël; et il poussa David contre le peuple, en lui disant: Va, et fais le dénombrement d'Israël et de Juda.
2 For the King said to Ioab the captaine of the hoste, which was with him, Goe speedily now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan euen to Beer-sheba, and nomber ye the people, that I may knowe the nomber of the people.
Et le roi dit à Joab, général de ses troupes, qui était avec lui: Parcours toutes les tribus d'Israël et de Juda, depuis Dan jusqu'à Bersabée; fais le recensement du peuple, et j'en saurai le nombre.
3 And Ioab saide vnto the King, The Lord thy God increase the people an hundreth folde more then they be, and that the eyes of my lorde the King may see it: but why doeth my lord the King desire this thing?
Joab répondit au roi: Puisse le Seigneur Dieu ajouter à ce peuple, et le rendre cent fois aussi nombreux qu'il l'est; puisse le roi mon maître le voir de ses yeux; mais pourquoi le roi mon maître a-t-il formé ce dessein?
4 Notwithstanding the Kings worde preuailed against Ioab and against the captaines of the hoste: therefore Ioab and the captaines of the hoste went out from the presence of the King to nomber the people of Israel.
Mais la volonté du roi prévalut sur Joab et les autres chefs de l'armée. Joab partit donc avec les chefs des forces qui entouraient David, pour faire le recensement du peuple d'Israël.
5 And they passed ouer Iorden, and pitched in Aroer at the right side of the citie that is in the middes of the valley of Gad and toward Iazer.
Et ils traversèrent le Jourdain, et ils campèrent dans les champs d'Aroer, à droite de la ville, au milieu de la gorge de Gad et d'Eliézer.
6 Then they came to Gilead, and to Tahtim-hodshi, so they came to Dan Iaan, and so about to Zidon,
Ils allèrent ensuite en Galaad et dans la terre de Thabason, la même qu'Adasaï; ils passèrent par Danidan, par Udan, et ils firent le tour de Sidon.
7 And came to the fortresse of Tyrus and to all the cities of the Hiuites and of the Canaanites, and went towarde the South of Iudah, euen to Beer-sheba.
Puis, ils allèrent à Mapsar de Tyr, et dans toutes les villes de l'Evéen et du Chananéen; et ils retournèrent au sud de Juda en Bersabée.
8 So when they had gone about all the lande, they returned to Ierusalem at the ende of nine moneths and twentie dayes.
Et ils parcoururent toute la terre; enfin, ils rentrèrent à Jérusalem au bout de neuf mois et vingt jours.
9 And Ioab deliuered the nomber and summe of the people vnto the King: and there were in Israel eight hundreth thousande strong men that drewe swordes, and the men of Iudah were fiue hundreth thousand men.
Et Joab remit au roi le dénombrement du peuple qu'il avait recensé. Il y avait en Israël huit cent mille hommes dans la force de l'âge, portant l'épée, et en Juda cinq cent mille combattants.
10 Then Dauids heart smote him, after that he had numbred the people: and Dauid said vnto the Lord, I haue sinned exceedingly in that I haue done: therefore nowe, Lord, I beseech thee, take away the trespasse of thy seruant: for I haue done very foolishly.
Et le cœur de David le tourmenta, après qu'il eut compté le peuple, et il dit au Seigneur: J'ai gravement péché en ce que je viens de faire, ô Seigneur; remettez à votre serviteur son iniquité, car j'ai commis une insigne folie.
11 And when Dauid was vp in the morning, the worde of the Lord came vnto the Prophet Gad Dauids Seer, saying,
Et David se leva de grand matin, et la parole du Seigneur vint à Gad le voyant, le prophète, et le Seigneur lui dit:
12 Go, and say vnto Dauid, Thus saith ye Lord, I offer thee three thinges, chuse thee which of them I shall doe vnto thee.
Va, et parle à David, disant: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Je t'apporte trois choses: choisis pour toi l'une d'elles, et tu l'auras.
13 So Gad came to Dauid, and shewed him, and said vnto him, Wilt thou that seuen yeeres famine come vpon thee in thy lande, or wilt thou flee three moneths before thine enemies, they following thee, or that there bee three dayes pestilence in thy land? nowe aduise thee, and see, what answere I shall giue to him that sent me.
Et Gad entra chez le roi, lui parla, et lui dit: Choisis pour toi ce que tu veux qui arrive; il y aura ou trois années de famine en ta terre, ou trois mois, pendant lesquels tu fuiras devant tes ennemis qui te poursuivront, ou trois jours de mortalité dans ton royaume. Réfléchis, et vois ce que je dois répondre à Celui qui m'envoie.
14 And Dauid said vnto Gad, I am in a wonderfull strait: let vs fall nowe into the hand of the Lord, (for his mercies are great) and let mee not fall into the hand of man.
Et David dit à Gad: De toutes parts le choix m'est cruel; mais j'aime mieux me livrer aux mains du Seigneur, parce qu'il a eu souvent compassion de moi; je ne tomberai point dans les mains des hommes.
15 So the Lord sent a pestilece in Israel, from the morning euen to the time appointed: and there dyed of the people from Dan euen to Beer-sheba seuentie thousand men.
David choisit donc la mortalité; or, on était au temps de la moisson; et le Seigneur envoya la mort en Israël depuis le point du jour jusqu'à midi; la peste commença à frapper le peuple, et, de Dan à Bersabée, soixante-dix mille hommes périrent.
16 And when the Angel stretched out his hande vpon Ierusalem to destroy it, the Lord repented of the euil, and said to the Angel that destroyed the people, It is sufficient, holde nowe thine hand. And the Angel of the Lord was by the threshing place of Araunah the Iebusite.
Et l'ange de Dieu étendit la main sur Jérusalem pour la détruire; mais le Seigneur eut compassion de ses maux, et il dit à l'ange exterminateur qui détruisait le peuple: C'est assez, arrête ta main. Or, l'ange du Seigneur était auprès de l'aire d'Orna le Jébuséen.
17 And Dauid spake vnto the Lord (when he sawe the Angel that smote the people) and saide, Behold, I haue sinned, yea, I haue done wickedly: but these sheepe, what haue they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against mee and against my fathers house.
David, quand il vit l'ange du Seigneur frapper le peuple, parla au Seigneur, et lui dit: Me voici, c'est moi qui ai péché; mais ces brebis qu'ont-elles fait? Que votre main soit contre moi et contre la maison de mon père.
18 So Gad came the same day to Dauid, and said vnto him, Go vp, reare an altar vnto the Lord in the threshing floore of Araunah the Iebusite.
Et ce jour-là, Gad vint à David, et il lui dit: Lève-toi, et dresse un autel au Seigneur dans l'aire d'Orna le Jébuséen.
19 And Dauid (according to the saying of Gad) went vp, as the Lord had commanded.
Et David se leva, comme le lui prescrivait Gad, et comme à Gad l'avait prescrit le Seigneur.
20 And Araunah looked, and sawe the King and his seruants comming towarde him, and Araunah went out, and bowed himselfe before the King on his face to the ground,
Orna était penché à sa fenêtre, et voyant le roi qui venait à lui avec ses serviteurs, il sortit, se prosterna devant le roi la face contre terre,
21 And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the King come to his seruant? Then Dauid answered, To bye the threshing floore of thee for to builde an altar vnto the Lord, that the plague may cease from the people.
Et dit: Pourquoi le roi mon maître est-il venu chez son serviteur? David répondit: C'est pour t'acheter ton aire, et y bâtir un autel au Seigneur, afin que cette peste cesse d'atteindre le peuple.
22 Then Araunah saide vnto Dauid, Let my lord the King take and offer what seemeth him good in his eyes: beholde the oxen for the burnt offring, and charets, and the instruments of the oxen for wood.
Et Orna dit à David: Que le roi mon maître prenne et consacre ce que bon lui semble; voici mes bœufs pour l'holocauste; les jougs et le chariot serviront à les brûler.
23 (All these things did Araunah as a King giue vnto the King: and Araunah saide vnto the King, The Lord thy God be fauourable vnto thee)
Ainsi, Orna donna tout au roi, et il lui dit: Que le Seigneur ton Dieu te bénisse.
24 Then the King saide vnto Araunah, Not so, but I will bye it of thee at a price, and will not offer burnt offring vnto ye Lord my God of that which doeth cost me nothing. So Dauid bought the threshing floore, and the oxen for fiftie shekels of siluer.
Mais le roi repartit: Je n'accepte point, je t'achèterai ce que tu m'offres, moyennant un bon prix; je ne présenterai point au Seigneur un holocauste qui ne me coûte rien. Et David acheta l'aire avec les bœufs cinquante sicles d'argent.
25 And Dauid built there an altar vnto the Lord, and offred burnt offrings and peace offrings, and the Lord was appeased toward ye lande, and the plague ceased from Israel.
Aussitôt, David bâtit l'autel au Seigneur; puis, il y offrit des holocaustes et des hosties pacifiques. Salomon embellit plus tard l'autel, qui était d'abord fort petit. Pour le moment, le Seigneur exauça les vœux de la terre, et la peste cessa en Israël.
