2 Samuel 2
1 After this, Dauid asked counsel of the Lord, saying, Shall I go vp into any of the cities of Iudah? And the Lord sayd vnto him, Goe vp. And Dauid sayd Whither shall I goe? Hee then answered, Vnto Hebron.
Et après ces événements, David interrogea l'Éternel en ces termes: Dois-je gagner l'une des villes de Juda? Et l'Éternel lui dit:
2 So Dauid went vp thither, and his two wiues also, Ahinoam the Izreelite, and Abigail Nabals wife the Carmelite.
Oui. Et David dit: Laquelle? Et Il répondit: Hébron. Et David s'y transporta avec ses deux femmes, Ahinoam de Jizréel, et Abigaïl, femme de Nabal, le Carmélite.
3 And Dauid brought vp the men that were with him, euery man with his houshold, and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.
Il y emmena de même avec lui les hommes qui l'accompagnaient, chacun d'eux avec sa maison, et ils demeurèrent dans les villes attenantes à Hébron.
4 Then the men of Iudah came, and there they anoynted Dauid King ouer the house of Iudah. And they tolde Dauid, saying, that the men of Iabesh Gilead buried Saul.
Alors arrivèrent des hommes de Juda, et là ils oignirent David comme roi de la maison de Juda.
5 And Dauid sent messengers vnto the men of Iabesh Gilead, and said vnto them, Blessed are ye of the Lord, that yee haue shewed such kindenes vnto your lord Saul, that you haue buried him.
Et l'on apporta cet avis à David: Ce sont les hommes de Jabès en Galaad, qui ont donné la sépulture à Saül. Aussitôt David dépêcha des envoyés aux hommes de Jabès en Galaad avec ce message: Soyez les bénis de l'Éternel pour votre acte de piété envers votre Seigneur, envers Saül à qui vous avez donné la sépulture.
6 Therefore now the Lord shewe mercie and trueth vnto you: and I will recompence you this benefite, because ye haue done this thing.
Qu'en retour l'Éternel vous témoigne Son amour et Sa fidélité! de mon côté je vous donne ce témoignage de bonté, en suite de ce que vous avez fait.
7 Therefore nowe let your handes be strong, and be you valiant: albeit your master Saul bee dead, yet neuerthelesse the house of Iudah hath anoynted me King ouer them.
Maintenant ayez toujours la main ferme, et soyez des braves! car si votre Seigneur Saül est mort, moi, j'ai été oint par la maison de Juda pour être son Roi.
8 But Abner the sonne of Ner that was captaine of Sauls hoste, tooke Ish-bosheth the sonne of Saul, and brought him to Mahanaim,
Cependant Abner, fils de Ner, général d'armée de Saül, prit Isboseth, fils de Saül, et le fit passer à Mahanaïm
9 And made him King ouer Gilead, and ouer the Ashurites, and ouer Izreel, and ouer Ephraim, and ouer Beniamin, and ouer al Israel.
et l'établit roi de Galaad, et des Assurites et de Jizréel, et d'Ephraïm et de Benjamin, ainsi de tout Israël.
10 Ish-bosheth Sauls sonne was fourtie yeere olde when he began to reigne ouer Israel, and reigned two yeere: but the house of Iudah followed Dauid.
Isboseth, fils de Saül, avait quarante ans, lorsqu'il devint roi d'Israël, et il régna deux ans; la maison de Juda seule s'attachait à David.
11 (And the time which Dauid reigned in Hebron ouer the house of Iudah, was seuen yeere and sixe moneths)
Et la durée du temps que David passa à Hébron, comme roi de la maison de Juda, fut de sept ans et six mois.
12 And Abner the sonne of Ner, and the seruantes of Ish-bosheth the sonne of Saul went out of Mahanaim to Gibeon.
Et Abner, fils de Ner, avec les serviteurs d'Isboseth, fils de Saül, sortit de Mahanaïm pour marcher sur Gabaon.
13 And Ioab the sonne of Zeruiah, and the seruants of Dauid went out and met one another by the poole of Gibeon: and they sate downe, the one on the one side of the poole, and the other on the otherside of the poole.
Et Joab, fils de Tseruïa, et les serviteurs de David se mirent en campagne, et ils se rencontrèrent de part et d'autre à l'étang de Gabaon, et ils prirent position ceux-ci d'un côté de l'étang, ceux-là de l'autre.
14 Then Abner saide to Ioab, Let the yong men nowe arise, and play before vs. And Ioab said, Let them arise.
Alors Abner dit à Joab: Prenons pour champions des jeunes gens soldats, et qu'ils s'escarmouchent devant nous! Et Joab dit: Prenons ces champions.
15 Then there arose and went ouer twelue of Beniamin by number, which perteined to Ish-bosheth the sonne of Saul, and twelue of the seruants of Dauid.
Et ils se mirent sur pied et ils s'avancèrent au nombre de douze pour Benjamin et Isboseth, fils de Saül, et douze des serviteurs de David.
16 And euery one caught his fellowe by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellowes side, so they fell downe together: wherefore ye place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.
Et chacun d'eux saisit la tête de son adversaire, et chacun d'eux enfonça son épée dans le flanc de son adversaire, et ils tombèrent tous à la fois. Et l'on donna à cet emplacement le nom de Helkath-Hatsourim (champ des lames): il est près de Gabaon.
17 And the battel was exceeding sore that same day: for Abner and the men of Israel fell before the seruants of Dauid.
En cette journée le combat fut très rude et Abner et les hommes d'Israël furent défaits par les serviteurs de David.
18 And there were three sonnes of Zeruiah there, Ioab, and Abishai, and Asahel. And Asahel was as light on foote as a wilde roe.
Et il y avait là trois fils de Tseruïa: Joab et Abisaï et Hasahel. Et Hasahel avait dans ses pieds l'agilité d'une gazelle qui court dans les champs.
19 And Asahel followed after Abner, and in going he turned neither to the right hand nor to the left from Abner.
Et Hasahel poursuivait Abner sans s'écarter ni à droite ni à gauche des traces d'Abner.
20 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, Yea.
Et Abner se tournant en arrière dit: Est-ce toi qui es Hasahel? Et il répondit: C'est moi-même.
21 Then Abner said, Turne thee either to the right hande, or to the left, and take one of the yong men, and take thee his weapons: and Asahel would not depart from him.
Et Abner lui dit: Tire-toi de côté à ta droite ou à ta gauche, et attaque-toi à l'un de ces jeunes hommes, et t'empare de son armure. Mais Hasahel ne voulut pas se désister de sa poursuite.
22 And Abner saide to Asahel, Depart from me: wherefore shoulde I smite thee to the grounde? howe then shoulde I be able to holde vp my face to Ioab thy brother?
Et Abner répéta à Hasahel: Renonce à me poursuivre! pourquoi devrais-je t'étendre sur le carreau? Comment alors pourrais-je me présenter à ton frère Joab?
23 And when he woulde not depart, Abner with the hinder ende of the speare smote him vnder the fift ryb, that the speare came out behind him: and he fell downe there, and dyed in his place. And as many as came to the place where Asahel fell downe and dyed, stoode still.
Mais il refusa de céder. Alors Abner lui porta au ventre un coup du talon de sa lance qui ressortit par derrière, et Hasahel tomba et mourut sur la place. Et tous ceux qui arrivaient à l'endroit où Hasahel était tombé et mort, s'arrêtaient.
24 Ioab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sunne went downe, when they were come to the hill Ammah, that lieth before Giah, by the way of the wildernesse of Gibeon.
Et Joab et Abisaï poursuivirent Abner, et au coucher du soleil ils atteignirent le monticule d'Amma, situé devant Giah sur la route du désert de Gabaon.
25 And the children of Beniamin gathered them selues together after Abner, and were on an heape and stoode on the top of an hill.
Et les Benjaminites vinrent se grouper à la suite d'Abner et se formèrent en légion et prirent position au sommet d'un coteau.
26 Then Abner called to Ioab, and said, Shall the sworde deuoure for euer? knowest thou not, that it will be bitternesse in the latter ende? howe long then shall it be, or thou bid the people returne from following their brethren?
Alors Abner s'adressant à Joab lui dit: L'épée sera-t-elle donc toujours dévorante? Ne sais-tu pas qu'il ne résultera que misère? Combien de temps encore veux-tu ne pas dire au peuple de renoncer à poursuivre des frères?
27 And Ioab sayde, As God liueth, if thou haddest not spoken, surely euen in the morning the people had departed euery one backe from his brother.
Et Joab dit: Par la vie de Dieu! si tu n'avais pas parlé, c'est demain seulement que le peuple aurait été ramené de la poursuite de ses frères.
28 So Ioab blew a trumpet, and all the people stoode still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.
Puis Joab sonna de la trompette, et tout le peuple fit halte, et cessa de harceler Israël et ne continua pas la guerre.
29 And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plaine, and went ouer Iorden, and past through all Bithron till they came to Mahanaim.
Cependant Abner et ses hommes employèrent toute cette même nuit à traverser la plaine, et ils passèrent le Jourdain et traversèrent tout le Bithron et gagnèrent Mahanaïm.
30 Ioab also returned backe from Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of Dauids seruants nineteene men and Asahel.
Et Joab renonçant à la poursuite d'Abner, rassembla tout le peuple; et des serviteurs de David il manquait dix-neuf hommes et Hasahel.
31 But the seruants of Dauid had smitten of Beniamin, and of Abners men, so that three hundreth and threescore men dyed.
D'un autre côté les serviteurs de David avaient frappé dans Benjamin et la troupe d'Abner, trois cent soixante hommes, à mort.
32 And they tooke vp Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Bethlehem: and Ioab and his men went all night, and when they came to Hebron, the day arose.
Et ils emportèrent Hasahel et lui donnèrent la sépulture dans le tombeau de son père à Bethléhem. Et Joab et ses hommes marchèrent toute la nuit et avec le jour ils arrivaient à Hébron.
