2 Kings 3
1 Nowe Iehoram the sonne of Ahab beganne to reigne ouer Israel in Samaria, the eighteenth yeere of Iehoshaphat King of Iudah, and reigned twelue yeeres.
In het achttiende jaar der regering van Josafat over Juda werd Joram, de zoon van Achab, te Samaria koning van Israël. Hij regeerde twaalf jaar.
2 And he wrought euill in the sight of the Lord, but not like his father nor like his mother: for he tooke away the image of Baal that his father had made.
Hij deed wat kwaad was in de ogen van Jahweh, maar niet zo erg als zijn vader en moeder; want hij verwijderde de heilige zuilen van Báal, die zijn vader had opgericht.
3 Neuerthelesse, he cleaued vnto the sinnes of Ieroboam, the sonne of Nebat, which made Israel to sinne, and departed not therefrom.
Maar hij brak niet met de zonde, waartoe Jeroboam, de zoon van Nebat, Israël had verleid.
4 Then Mesha King of Moab had store of sheepe, and rendred vnto the King of Israel an hundreth thousande lambes, and an hundreth thousande rammes with the wooll.
Mesja, de koning van Moab, die een herdersvorst was, moest aan den koning van Israël als schatting jaarlijks honderdduizend lammeren en de wol van honderdduizend schapen betalen.
5 But when Ahab was dead, the king of Moab rebelled against the King of Israel.
Maar na de dood van Achab had de koning van Moab zich van den koning van Israël onafhankelijk gemaakt.
6 Therefore King Iehoram went out of Samaria the same season, and nombred all Israel,
Daarom verliet koning Joram op zekere dag Samaria, om heel Israël te gaan monsteren.
7 And went, and sent to Iehoshaphat King of Iudah, saying, The King of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou goe with me to battell against Moab? And he answered, I will goe vp: for I am, as thou art, my people, as thy people, and mine horses as thine horses.
Tegelijk liet hij aan koning Josafat van Juda berichten: De koning van Moab heeft zich van mij los gemaakt; wilt gij met mij tegen Moab ten strijde trekken? Hij antwoordde: Ik ga mee; want ik en gij zijn één; mijn volk is uw volk, en mijn paarden zijn uw paarden.
8 Then said he, What way shall we goe vp? And he answered, The way of the wildernesse of Edom.
En hij vroeg: Welke weg zullen we gaan? Het antwoord luidde: Door de woestijn van Edom.
9 So went the King of Israel and the king of Iudah, and the King of Edom, and when they had compassed the way seuen dayes, they had no water for the hoste, nor for the cattell that followed them.
Daarop trok de koning van Israël met de koningen van Juda en Edom te velde; maar na een tocht van zeven dagen was er geen water meer voor het leger en de dieren, die hen volgden.
10 Therefore the King of Israel sayde, Alas, that the Lord hath called these three Kings, to giue them into the hand of Moab.
Toen sprak de koning van Israël: Wee; nu heeft Jahweh ons, drie koningen, hierheen geroepen, om ons aan Moab over te leveren.
11 But Iehoshaphat saide, Is there not here a Prophet of the Lord, that we may inquire of the Lord by him? And one of the King of Israels seruants answered, and said, Here is Elisha the sonne of Shaphat, which powred water on the handes of Eliiah.
Maar Josafat vroeg: Is er hier geen profeet van Jahweh, door wien we Hem kunnen raadplegen? Iemand uit het gevolg van den koning van Israël antwoordde: Eliseus is hier, de zoon van Sjafat, die op Elias’ handen water goot.
12 Then Iehoshaphat saide, The worde of the Lord is with him. Therefore the King of Israel, and Iehoshaphat, and the King of Edom went downe to him.
Josafat verzekerde: Bij hem is het woord van Jahweh. De koning van Israël ging dus met Josafat en den koning van Edom naar hem toe.
13 And Elisha sayde vnto the King of Israel, What haue I to doe with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father and to the prophets of thy mother. And the King of Israel saide vnto him, Nay: for the Lord hath called these three Kings, to giue them into the hande of Moab.
Maar Eliseus sprak tot den koning van Israël: Wat heb ik met u te maken? Ga naar de profeten van uw vader en moeder! De koning van Israël antwoordde: Maak toch, dat Jahweh ons drieën niet hierheen heeft geroepen, om tenslotte aan Moab te worden overgeleverd.
14 Then Elisha said, As the Lord of hostes liueth, in whose sight I stande, if it were not, that I regarde the presence of Iehoshaphat the King of Iudah, I woulde not haue looked towarde thee, nor seene thee.
Toen sprak Eliseus: Zo waar Jahweh der heirscharen leeft, voor wiens aanschijn ik sta; als ik me niet in acht nam tegenover Josafat, den koning van Juda, dan keek ik u nog niet eens aan.
15 But nowe bring me a minstrel. And when the minstrel played, the hand of the Lord came vpon him.
Doch haalt mij nu maar een citerspeler. Zodra de citerspeler begon te tokkelen, kwam de hand van Jahweh op Eliseüs.
16 And he saide, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full of ditches.
En hij sprak: Zo spreekt Jahweh! Graaft in dit dal overal kuilen.
17 For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall neither see winde nor see raine, yet the valley shalbe filled with water, that ye may drinke, both ye and your cattel, and your beastes.
Want zo spreekt Jahweh! Gij zult geen wind en regen zien, maar dit dal zal met water worden gevuld, zodat gij met uw leger en uw lastdieren kunt drinken.
18 But this is a small thing in the sight of the Lord: for he will giue Moab into your hande.
En dit betekent nog maar weinig voor Jahweh. Want Hij zal Moab aan u overleveren;
19 And ye shall smite euery strong towne and euery chiefe citie, and shall fell euery faire tree, and shall stoppe all the fountaines of water, and marre euery good fielde with stones.
gij zult alle versterkte steden overweldigen, alle vruchtbomen vellen, alle waterbronnen verstoppen en alle goede akkers met stenen bederven.
20 And in the morning whe the meat offring was offred, beholde, there came water by the way of Edom: and the countrey was filled with water.
En de volgende morgen omtrent de tijd van het offer, kwam er van de kant van Edom plotseling een watervloed opzetten, die het land overstroomde.
21 And when al the Moabites heard that the Kings were come vp to fight against them, they gathered all that was able to put on harnesse, and vpwarde, and stood in their border.
Intussen hadden de Moabieten gehoord, dat de koningen tegen hen ten strijde waren getrokken. Daarom waren alle strijdbare mannen opgeroepen, en aan de grens opgesteld.
22 And they rose earely in the morning, when the sunne arose vpon the water, and the Moabites saw the water ouer against them, as red as blood.
Maar toen de zon ‘s morgens vroeg over het water straalde, zagen de Moabieten uit de verte het water bloedrood gekleurd.
23 And they saide, This is blood the Kings are surely slaine, and one hath smitten another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoyle.
En ze riepen: Dat is bloed! De koningen zijn elkaar te lijf gegaan, en hebben elkander verslagen. Moab, op; naar de buit!
24 And when they came to the host of Israel, the Israelites arose vp, and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them, but they inuaded them, and smote Moab.
En ze renden op het kamp der Israëlieten af. Maar de Israëlieten hadden zich te weer gesteld, en sloegen op de Moabieten in, die voor hen de vlucht moesten nemen. Doch de Israëlieten zetten hen achterna, en sloegen er voortdurend op in.
25 And they destroyed the cities: and on all the good field euery man cast his stone, and filled them and they stopt all the fountaines of water, and felled all the good trees: onely in Kirharaseth left they the stones thereof: howebeit they went about it with slings, and smote it.
Ze verwoestten al hun steden, wierpen alle goede akkers vol stenen, verstopten alle bronnen en hakten alle vruchtbomen om. Ten slotte bleef alleen Kir-Charésjet met zijn bezetting nog over; maar ook deze stad werd door de slingeraars omsingeld en beschoten.
26 And when the King of Moab saw that the battel was too sore for him, he tooke with him seuen hudreth men that drew the sword, to break through vnto the King of Edom: but they could not.
Toen de koning van Moab nu zag, dat de strijd hem te machtig werd, trachtte hij met zeven honderd strijders bij den koning van Edom door te breken; maar het lukte hun niet.
27 Then he tooke his eldest sonne, that should haue reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offring vpon the wall: so that Israel was sore grieued, and they departed from him, and returned to their countrey.
Daarom nam hij zijn eerstgeboren zoon, die hem moest opvolgen, en offerde hem als brandoffer op de stadsmuur. Nu barstte er een hevige toorn tegen de Israëlieten los, zodat ze moesten opbreken en naar hun land terugkeren.
