1 Timothy 5
1 Rebuke not an Elder, but exhort him as a father, and the yonger men as brethren,
Ne reprends pas rudement un vieillard; mais exhorte-le comme un père, les jeunes gens, comme des frères,
2 The elder women as mothers, the yonger as sisters, with all purenesse.
les femmes âgées comme des mères, les jeunes comme des soeurs, avec une entière pureté.
3 Honour widowes, which are widowes in deede.
Honore les veuves qui sont véritablement veuves.
4 But if any widowe haue children or nephewes, let them learne first to shewe godlinesse towarde their owne house, and to recompense their kinred: for that is an honest thing and acceptable before God.
Mais si une veuve a des enfants ou des petits-enfants, qu'ils apprennent avant tout à exercer leur piété envers leur propre famille, et à payer de retour leurs parents; car cela est agréable à Dieu.
5 And shee that is a widowe in deede and left alone, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and praiers night and day.
Celle qui est véritablement veuve et qui est demeurée seule, a mis son espérance en Dieu, et elle persévère nuit et jour dans les prières et les supplications.
6 But shee that liueth in pleasure, is dead, while shee liueth.
Mais, pour celle qui vit dans les plaisirs, quoique vivante, elle est morte.
7 These things therefore warne them of, that they may be blamelesse.
Rappelle-leur ces choses, afin qu'elles soient sans reproche.
8 If there bee any that prouideth not for his owne, and namely for them of his housholde, hee denieth the faith, and is worse then an infidell.
Si quelqu'un n'a pas soin des siens et principalement de ceux de sa famille, il a renié la foi, et il est pire qu'un infidèle.
9 Let not a widow be taken into the number vnder three score yeere olde, that hath beene the wife of one husband,
Pour être inscrite sur le rôle des veuves, il faut qu'une femme n'ait pas moins de soixante ans, qu'elle n'ait eu qu'un mari,
10 And well reported of for good woorkes: if shee haue nourished her children, if shee haue lodged the strangers, if shee haue washed the Saintes feete, if shee haue ministred vnto them which were in aduersitie, if shee were continually giuen vnto euery good woorke.
qu'elle se soit rendue recommandable par ses bonnes oeuvres, qu'elle ait élevé des enfants, exercé l'hospitalité, lavé les pieds des saints, secouru les malheureux, pratiqué toutes sortes de bonnes oeuvres.
11 But refuse the yonger widowes: for when they haue begun to waxe wanton against Christ, they will marrie,
Mais refuse les veuves plus jeunes; car lorsque l'attrait du plaisir les a détachées du Christ, elles veulent se marier,
12 Hauing damnation, because they haue broken the first faith.
et elles s'attirent ainsi le reproche d'avoir violé leur premier engagement.
13 And likewise also being idle they learne to goe about from house to house: yea, they are not onely ydle, but also pratlers and busibodies, speaking things which are not comely.
Avec cela, étant oisives, elles prennent l'habitude de courir de maison en maison; et non seulement elles sont oisives, mais encore elles sont bavardes et indiscrètes, parlant de choses dont on ne doit point parler.
14 I will therefore that the yonger women marie, and beare children, and gouerne the house, and giue none occasion to the aduersary to speake euill.
Je veux donc que les jeunes veuves se marient, qu'elles aient des enfants, qu'elles dirigent leur maison, et qu'elles ne donnent à l'adversaire aucune occasion de médire.
15 For certaine are alreadie turned backe after Satan.
Car déjà quelques-unes se sont détournées pour suivre Satan.
16 If any faithfull man, or faithfull woman haue widowes, let them minister vnto them, and let not the Church bee charged, that there may bee sufficient for them that are widowes in deede.
Si quelque fidèle a des veuves dans sa famille, qu'il les assiste, et que l'Église n'en ait point la charge, afin qu'elle puisse venir en aide à celles qui sont véritablement veuves.
17 The Elders that rule well, let them be had in double honour, specially they which labour in the worde and doctrine,
Que les anciens, qui dirigent bien l'Église, soient estimés dignes d'un double honneur, surtout ceux qui sont chargés de la prédication et de l'enseignement.
18 For the Scripture sayeth, Thou shalt not mousell the mouth of the oxe that treadeth out the corne: and, The labourer is worthie of his wages.
Car l'Écriture dit: «Tu n'emmuselleras pas le boeuf qui foule le grain»; et aussi: «L'ouvrier est digne de son salaire.»
19 Against an Elder receiue none accusation, but vnder two or three witnesses.
Ne reçois aucune accusation contre un ancien, si ce n'est sur la déposition de deux ou trois témoins.
20 Them that sinne, rebuke openly, that the rest also may feare.
Ceux qui sont en faute, reprends-les devant tous, afin d'inspirer de la crainte aux autres.
21 I charge thee before God and the Lord Iesus Christ, and the elect Angels, that thou obserue these thinges without preferring one to an other, and doe nothing partially.
Je te conjure devant Dieu, devant Jésus-Christ et devant les anges élus, d'observer ces recommandations, sans agir avec prévention et avec partialité.
22 Lay handes suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other mens sinnes: keepe thy selfe pure.
N'impose les mains à personne avec précipitation; ne participe point aux péchés d'autrui; conserve-toi pur toi-même.
23 Drinke no longer water, but vse a litle wine for thy stomakes sake, and thine often infirmities.
Ne continue pas à ne boire que de l'eau; mais prends un peu de vin, à cause de ton estomac et de tes fréquentes indispositions.
24 Some mens sinnes are open before hand, and goe before vnto iudgement: but some mens folowe after.
Les péchés de certains hommes sont manifestes et les désignent d'avance au jugement; tandis que, chez d'autres, on ne les découvre que plus tard.
25 Likewise also the good woorkes are manifest before hande, and they that are otherwise, cannot be hid.
Il en est de même pour les bonnes oeuvres: il y en a qui sont manifestes, et celles qui ne le sont pas ne sauraient demeurer cachées.
