1 Timothy 3
1 This is a true saying, If any man desire the office of a Bishop, he desireth a worthie worke.
Cette parole est certaine: si quelqu'un aspire à être évêque, il désire une charge excellente.
2 A Bishop therefore must be vnreproueable, the husband of one wife, watching, temperate, modest, harberous, apt to teache,
Il faut donc que l'évêque soit irrépréhensible, mari d'une seule femme, sobre, prudent, digne, hospitalier, capable d'enseigner.
3 Not giuen to wine, no striker, not giuen to filthy lucre, but gentle, no fighter, not couetous,
Qu'il ne soit ni adonné au vin, ni violent, mais doux et pacifique; qu'il ne soit pas attaché à l'argent;
4 One that can rule his owne house honestly, hauing children vnder obedience with all honestie.
qu'il gouverne bien sa propre maison, et qu'il tienne ses enfants dans la soumission et dans une parfaite honnêteté.
5 For if any cannot rule his owne house, how shall he care for the Church of God?
En effet, si quelqu'un ne sait pas gouverner sa propre maison, comment pourra-t-il s'occuper de l'Église de Dieu?
6 He may not be a yong scholer, lest he being puffed vp fall into the condemnation of the deuill.
Qu'il ne soit pas nouvellement converti, de peur qu'enflé d'orgueil, il ne tombe sous la condamnation du Diable.
7 He must also be well reported of, euen of them which are without, lest he fall into rebuke, and the snare of the deuill.
Il faut aussi que ceux du dehors lui rendent un bon témoignage, pour qu'il ne soit point exposé à l'opprobre et ne tombe pas dans les pièges du Diable.
8 Likewise must Deacons be graue, not double tongued, not giuen vnto much wine, neither to filthy lucre,
De même, que les diacres soient graves; qu'ils ne soient ni doubles dans leur langage, ni adonnés aux excès du vin, ni âpres au gain,
9 Hauing the mysterie of the faith in pure conscience.
mais qu'ils gardent le mystère de la foi dans une conscience pure.
10 And let them first be proued: then let them minister, if they be found blameles.
Aussi faut-il qu'ils soient d'abord mis à l'épreuve, et qu'ils n'obtiennent la charge de diacre que s'ils sont trouvés sans reproche.
11 Likewise their wiues must be honest, not euill speakers, but sober, and faithfull in all things.
Que leurs femmes soient graves, point médisantes, sobres, fidèles en toutes choses.
12 Let the Deacons be the husbands of one wife, and such as can rule their children well, and their owne housholdes.
Que les diacres soient maris d'une seule femme; qu'ils gouvernent bien leurs enfants et leur propre maison.
13 For they that haue ministred well, get them selues a good degree, and great libertie in the faith, which is in Christ Iesus.
En effet, ceux qui auront bien rempli leur ministère, acquerront un rang honorable et une grande assurance dans la foi en Jésus-Christ.
14 These things write I vnto thee, trusting to come very shortly vnto thee.
Je t'écris ceci, tout en espérant aller te voir bientôt,
15 But if I tary long, that thou maist yet know, how thou oughtest to behaue thy self in ye house of God, which is the Church of the liuing God, the pillar and ground of trueth.
afin que, si je tarde, tu saches comment il faut se conduire dans la maison de Dieu, qui est l'Église du Dieu vivant, la colonne et l'appui de la vérité.
16 And without controuersie, great is the mysterie of godlinesse, which is, God is manifested in the flesh, iustified in the Spirit, seene of Angels, preached vnto the Gentiles, beleeued on in the world, and receiued vp in glorie.
Oui, de l'aveu de tous, le mystère de la piété est grand: Celui qui a été manifesté en chair, a été justifié par l'Esprit, vu des anges, prêché aux Païens, cru dans le monde, élevé dans la gloire!
