1 Timothy 3
1 This is a true saying, If any man desire the office of a Bishop, he desireth a worthie worke.
Cette parole est fidèle: celui qui cherche à être surveillant désire une bonne œuvre.
2 A Bishop therefore must be vnreproueable, the husband of one wife, watching, temperate, modest, harberous, apt to teache,
Le surveillant doit donc être irréprochable, mari d'une seule femme, tempérant, raisonnable, modeste, hospitalier, sachant enseigner;
3 Not giuen to wine, no striker, not giuen to filthy lucre, but gentle, no fighter, not couetous,
non buveur, non violent, non avide d'argent, mais doux, non querelleur, non cupide;
4 One that can rule his owne house honestly, hauing children vnder obedience with all honestie.
sachant bien gouverner sa propre maison, soumettant les enfants en toute révérence;
5 For if any cannot rule his owne house, how shall he care for the Church of God?
(car comment quelqu'un qui ne sait pas gouverner sa propre maison pourrait-il prendre soin de l'assemblée de Dieu?
6 He may not be a yong scholer, lest he being puffed vp fall into the condemnation of the deuill.
et non un nouveau converti, de peur qu'enflé d'orgueil il ne tombe dans la même condamnation que le diable.
7 He must also be well reported of, euen of them which are without, lest he fall into rebuke, and the snare of the deuill.
Il faut aussi qu'il ait un bon témoignage de la part de ceux du dehors, pour ne pas tomber dans l'opprobre et dans le piège du diable.
8 Likewise must Deacons be graue, not double tongued, not giuen vnto much wine, neither to filthy lucre,
De même, les serviteurs doivent être respectueux, ne pas avoir la langue bien pendue, ne pas être adonnés au vin, ne pas être avides d'argent,
9 Hauing the mysterie of the faith in pure conscience.
garder le mystère de la foi dans une conscience pure.
10 And let them first be proued: then let them minister, if they be found blameles.
Qu'eux aussi soient d'abord éprouvés, puis qu'ils servent, s'ils sont irréprochables.
11 Likewise their wiues must be honest, not euill speakers, but sober, and faithfull in all things.
De même, leurs épouses doivent être respectueuses, non médisantes, tempérantes et fidèles en toutes choses.
12 Let the Deacons be the husbands of one wife, and such as can rule their children well, and their owne housholdes.
Que les serviteurs soient maris d'une seule femme, qu'ils dirigent bien leurs enfants et leur propre maison.
13 For they that haue ministred well, get them selues a good degree, and great libertie in the faith, which is in Christ Iesus.
Car ceux qui ont bien servi s'acquièrent une bonne réputation et une grande assurance dans la foi qui est en Jésus-Christ.
14 These things write I vnto thee, trusting to come very shortly vnto thee.
Je vous écris ces choses, espérant venir bientôt chez vous,
15 But if I tary long, that thou maist yet know, how thou oughtest to behaue thy self in ye house of God, which is the Church of the liuing God, the pillar and ground of trueth.
mais si je tarde, c'est pour que vous sachiez comment il faut se conduire dans la maison de Dieu, qui est l'assemblée du Dieu vivant, la colonne et le fondement de la vérité.
16 And without controuersie, great is the mysterie of godlinesse, which is, God is manifested in the flesh, iustified in the Spirit, seene of Angels, preached vnto the Gentiles, beleeued on in the world, and receiued vp in glorie.
Sans contestation, le mystère de la piété est grand: Dieu a été révélé dans la chair, justifié dans l'esprit, vu par des anges, prêché parmi les nations, que l'on croit dans le monde, et reçu dans la gloire.
