1 Samuel 4
1 And Samuel spake vnto all Israel: and Israel went out against the Philistims to battel and pitched beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistims pitched in Aphek.
La palabra de Samuel corrió por todo Israel. (En aquel tiempo) salió Israel al encuentro de los filisteos para hacerles guerra, y acamparon en Ebenéser, mientras los filisteos sentaron sus reales en Afec.
2 And the Philistims put themselues in aray against Israel: and when they ioyned the battell, Israel was smitten downe before the Philistims: who slewe of the armie in the fielde about foure thousand men.
Los filisteos se pusieron en orden de batalla contra Israel, y se trabó la batalla, en la cual Israel fue vencido por los filisteos, que mataron en el campo a unos cuatro mil hombres del ejército.
3 So when the people were come into the campe, the Elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lord smitten vs this day before ye Philistims? let vs bring the Arke of the couenant of the Lord out of Shiloh vnto vs, that when it commeth among vs, it may saue vs out of the hande of our enemies.
Cuando el pueblo volvió al campamento, dijeron los ancianos de Israel: “¿Por qué nos ha derrotado Yahvé hoy delante de los filisteos? Tráigasenos desde Silo el Arca de la Alianza de Yahvé y que venga Él en medio de nosotros, para salvarnos del poder de nuestros enemigos.”
4 Then the people sent to Shiloh, and brought from thence the Arke of the couenant of the Lord of hostes, who dwelleth betweene the Cherubims: and there were the two sonnes of Eli, Hophni, and Phinehas, with the Arke of the couenant of God.
Envió, pues, el pueblo mensajeros a Silo, y trajeron de allí el Arca de la Alianza de Yahvé de los Ejércitos, que está sentado sobre los querubines. Los dos hijos de Helí, Ofní y Fineés, acompañaban el Arca de la Alianza de Dios.
5 And when the Arke of the couenant of the Lord came into the hoste, all Israel shouted a mightie shoute, so that the earth rang againe.
Cuando el Arca de la Alianza de Yahvé llegó al campamento, todo Israel dio voces con algazara tan grande que se conmovió la tierra.
6 And when the Philistims heard the noyse of the shoute, they said, What meaneth the sound of this mightie shoute in the host of the Ebrewes? and they vnderstoode, that the Arke of the Lord was come into the hoste.
Oyeron los filisteos el estruendo de la algazara y dijeron: “¿Qué estruendo de algazara tan grande es este en el campamento de los hebreos?” Y supieron que el Arca de Yahvé había venido al campamento.
7 And the Philistims were afraide, and saide, God is come into the hoste: therefore saide they, Wo vnto vs: for it hath not bene so heretofore.
Con esto se atemorizaron los filisteos, pues se dijeron: “Ha venido Dios al campamento”; y agregaron: “¡Ay de nosotros! Pues cosa como esta no ha sucedido nunca antes.
8 Wo vnto vs, who shall deliuer vs out of the hande of these mightie Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wildernes.
¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de la mano de ese poderoso Dios? Es aquel Dios que hirió a Egipto con toda suerte de plagas en el desierto.
9 Be strong and play the men, O Philistims, that ye be not seruants vnto the Ebrewes, as they haue serued you: be valiant therefore, and fight.
Mostraos fuertes y sed hombres, filisteos, para que no seáis siervos de los hebreos, como ellos lo han sido de vosotros. Sed hombres, y luchad.”
10 And the Philistims fought, and Israel was smitten downe, and fled euery man into his tent: and there was an exceeding great slaughter: for there fell of Israel thirtie thousand footemen.
Dieron, pues, los filisteos la batalla y fue derrotado Israel. Huyó cada cual a su tienda, y la derrota fue tan grande, que de Israel cayeron treinta mil hombres de a pie.
11 And the Arke of God was taken, and the two sonnes of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas died.
Fue tomada también el Arca de Dios; y murieron los dos hijos de Helí, Ofní y Fineés.
12 And there ranne a man of Beniamin out of the armie, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and earth vpon his head.
Un hombre de Benjamín, uno del ejército, corrió y llegó aquel mismo día a Silo, rasgado el vestido y cubierta de polvo la cabeza.
13 And when hee came, loe, Eli sate vpon a seate by the wayside, wayting: for his heart feared for the Arke of God and when the man came into the citie to tell it, all the citie cried out.
Cuando llegó, he aquí que Helí estaba sentado en su silla al lado del camino, mirando, porque temblaba su corazón por el Arca de Dios. Llegó, pues, el hombre y dijo en la ciudad lo que había pasado, y toda la ciudad prorrumpió en alaridos.
14 And when Eli heard the noyse of the crying, he sayd, What meaneth this noyse of the tumult? and the man came in hastily, and tolde Eli.
Al oír Helí las voces de alarido, preguntó: “¿Qué ruido tumultuoso es ese?” Entonces el hombre vino a toda prisa y dio la noticia a Helí.
15 (Nowe Eli was fourescore and eighteene yeere olde, and his eyes were dimme that hee could not see)
Helí tenía ya noventa y ocho años; sus ojos no se movían más, y ya no podía ver.
16 And the man sayd vnto Eli, I came from the armie, and I fled this day out of the hoste: and he sayd, What thing is done, my sonne?
Dijo el hombre a Helí: “Yo vengo del ejército; hoy mismo huí del ejército.” Helí preguntó: “¿Qué ha pasado, hijo mío?”
17 Then the messenger answered and sayd, Israel is fled before the Philistims, and there hath bene also a great slaughter among the people: and moreouer thy two sonnes, Hophni and Phinehas are dead, and the Arke of God is taken.
Y respondió el mensajero y dijo: “Huyó Israel delante de los filisteos, y fue grande el estrago en el pueblo; también tus dos hijos, Ofní y Fineés, quedaron muertos; y el Arca de Dios ha sido tomada.”
18 And when he had made mention of the Arke of God, Eli fell from his seate backward by the side of the gate, and his necke was broken, and he dyed: for he was an olde man and heauie: and he had iudged Israel fourtie yeeres.
Y sucedió que cuando mencionó el Arca de Dios, cayó Helí de la silla hacia atrás, junto a la puerta, y se le quebró la cerviz, y murió; porque era hombre viejo y pesado. Fue juez de Israel durante cuarenta años.
19 And his daughter in lawe Phinehas wife was with childe neere her trauell: and when she heard the report that the Arke of God was taken, and that her father in lawe and her husband were dead, she bowed her selfe, and trauailed: for her paines came vpon her.
Su nuera, la mujer de Fineés, que estaba encinta y cercana ya al parto, como oyese la nueva de haber sido tomada el Arca de Dios, y que habían muerto su suegro y su marido, se doblegó y dio a luz, porque de repente vinieron sobre ella los dolores de parto.
20 And about the time of her death, the women that stoode about her, sayd vnto her, Feare not: for thou hast borne a sonne: but she answered not, nor regarded it.
Cuando estaba ya expirando, decían las mujeres que la asistían: “No temas, pues has dado a luz un hijo.” Mas ella no respondió, ni puso en ello su atención.
21 And she named the childe Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel, because the Arke of God was taken, and because of her father in lawe and her husband.
Llamó al niño Icabod, diciendo: “Se ha apartado de Israel la Gloria”, por haber sido capturada el Arca de Dios, y a causa de su suegro y de su marido.
22 She sayde againe, The glory is departed from Israel: for the Arke of God is taken.
Dijo, pues: “Se ha apartado de Israel la Gloria”, por haber sido tomada el Arca de Dios.
