1 Samuel 4

1 And Samuel spake vnto all Israel: and Israel went out against the Philistims to battel and pitched beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistims pitched in Aphek.

Και έγεινε λόγος του Σαμουήλ προς πάντα τον Ισραήλ. Και εξήλθεν ο Ισραήλ εναντίον των Φιλισταίων εις μάχην, και εστρατοπέδευσαν πλησίον του Έβεν-έζερ· οι δε Φιλισταίοι εστρατοπέδευσαν εν Αφέκ.

2 And the Philistims put themselues in aray against Israel: and when they ioyned the battell, Israel was smitten downe before the Philistims: who slewe of the armie in the fielde about foure thousand men.

Και παρετάχθησαν οι Φιλισταίοι εναντίον του Ισραήλ· και ότε εξηπλώθη η μάχη, εκτυπήθη ο Ισραήλ έμπροσθεν των Φιλισταίων· και εφονεύθησαν εν τω πεδίω κατά την συμπλοκήν έως τέσσαρες χιλιάδες ανδρών.

3 So when the people were come into the campe, the Elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lord smitten vs this day before ye Philistims? let vs bring the Arke of the couenant of the Lord out of Shiloh vnto vs, that when it commeth among vs, it may saue vs out of the hande of our enemies.

Ότε δε ήλθεν ο λαός εις το στρατόπεδον, είπον οι πρεσβύτεροι του Ισραήλ, Διά τι ο Κύριος επάταξεν ημάς σήμερον έμπροσθεν των Φιλισταίων; ας λάβωμεν προς εαυτούς από Σηλώ την κιβωτόν της διαθήκης του Κυρίου, και ελθούσα εν μέσω ημών θέλει σώσει ημάς εκ της χειρός των εχθρών ημών.

4 Then the people sent to Shiloh, and brought from thence the Arke of the couenant of the Lord of hostes, who dwelleth betweene the Cherubims: and there were the two sonnes of Eli, Hophni, and Phinehas, with the Arke of the couenant of God.

Και απέστειλεν ο λαός εις Σηλώ, και εσήκωσαν εκείθεν την κιβωτόν της διαθήκης του Κυρίου των δυνάμεων, του καθημένου επί των χερουβείμ· και αμφότεροι οι υιοί του Ηλεί, Οφνεί και Φινεές, ήσαν εκεί μετά της κιβωτού της διαθήκης του Θεού.

5 And when the Arke of the couenant of the Lord came into the hoste, all Israel shouted a mightie shoute, so that the earth rang againe.

Και ότε ήλθεν η κιβωτός της διαθήκης του Κυρίου εις το στρατόπεδον, πας ο Ισραήλ ηλάλαξε μετά φωνής μεγάλης, ώστε αντήχησεν η γη.

6 And when the Philistims heard the noyse of the shoute, they said, What meaneth the sound of this mightie shoute in the host of the Ebrewes? and they vnderstoode, that the Arke of the Lord was come into the hoste.

Και ακούσαντες οι Φιλισταίοι την φωνήν του αλαλαγμού, είπον, Τι σημαίνει η φωνή του μεγάλου τούτου αλαλαγμού εν τω στρατοπέδω των Εβραίων; Και έμαθον ότι η κιβωτός του Κυρίου ήλθεν εις το στρατόπεδον.

7 And the Philistims were afraide, and saide, God is come into the hoste: therefore saide they, Wo vnto vs: for it hath not bene so heretofore.

Και εφοβήθησαν οι Φιλισταίοι, λέγοντες, Ο Θεός ήλθεν εις το στρατόπεδον. Και είπον, Ουαί εις ημάς. Διότι δεν εστάθη τοιούτον πράγμα χθές και προχθές·

8 Wo vnto vs, who shall deliuer vs out of the hande of these mightie Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wildernes.

ουαί εις ημάς. Τις θέλει σώσει ημάς εκ της χειρός των θεών τούτων των ισχυρών; ούτοι είναι οι θεοί, οι πατάξαντες τους Αιγυπτίους εν πάση πληγή εν τη ερήμω·

9 Be strong and play the men, O Philistims, that ye be not seruants vnto the Ebrewes, as they haue serued you: be valiant therefore, and fight.

ενδυναμώθητε, Φιλισταίοι, και στάθητε ως άνδρες, διά να μη γείνητε δούλοι εις τους Εβραίους, καθώς αυτοί εστάθησαν δούλοι εις εσάς· στάθητε ως άνδρες, και πολεμήσατε αυτούς.

10 And the Philistims fought, and Israel was smitten downe, and fled euery man into his tent: and there was an exceeding great slaughter: for there fell of Israel thirtie thousand footemen.

Τότε οι Φιλισταίοι επολέμησαν· και εκτυπήθη ο Ισραήλ, και έφυγεν έκαστος εις την σκηνήν αυτού· και έγεινε σφαγή μεγάλη σφόδρα· και έπεσον εκ του Ισραήλ τριάκοντα χιλιάδες πεζοί.

11 And the Arke of God was taken, and the two sonnes of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas died.

Και η κιβωτός του Θεού επιάσθη· και αμφότεροι οι υιοί του Ηλεί, Οφνεί και Φινεές, εθανατώθησαν.

12 And there ranne a man of Beniamin out of the armie, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and earth vpon his head.

Και έδραμεν εκ της μάχης άνθρωπός τις εκ του Βενιαμίν, και ήλθεν εις Σηλώ την αυτήν ημέραν, έχων τα ιμάτια αυτού διεσχισμένα και χώμα επί την κεφαλήν αυτού.

13 And when hee came, loe, Eli sate vpon a seate by the wayside, wayting: for his heart feared for the Arke of God and when the man came into the citie to tell it, all the citie cried out.

Και ότε ήλθεν, ιδού, ο Ηλεί εκάθητο επί της καθέδρας, κατά το πλάγιον της οδού, σκοπεύων· διότι η καρδία αυτού έτρεμε περί της κιβωτού του Θεού. Και ότε ο άνθρωπος ελθών εις την πόλιν ανήγγειλε ταύτα, ανεβόησε πάσα η πόλις.

14 And when Eli heard the noyse of the crying, he sayd, What meaneth this noyse of the tumult? and the man came in hastily, and tolde Eli.

Και ακούσας ο Ηλεί την φωνήν της βοής, είπε, Τι σημαίνει η φωνή της βοής ταύτης; Και ο άνθρωπος ήλθε σπεύδων και ανήγγειλε προς τον Ηλεί.

15 (Nowe Eli was fourescore and eighteene yeere olde, and his eyes were dimme that hee could not see)

Ήτο δε ο Ηλεί ενενήκοντα οκτώ ετών· και οι οφθαλμοί αυτού ήσαν ημαυρωμένοι, ώστε δεν ηδύνατο να βλέπη.

16 And the man sayd vnto Eli, I came from the armie, and I fled this day out of the hoste: and he sayd, What thing is done, my sonne?

Και είπεν ο άνθρωπος προς τον Ηλεί, Εγώ είμαι ο ελθών εκ της μάχης, και έφυγον εγώ εκ της μάχης σήμερον. Και είπε, Τι έγεινε, τέκνον μου;

17 Then the messenger answered and sayd, Israel is fled before the Philistims, and there hath bene also a great slaughter among the people: and moreouer thy two sonnes, Hophni and Phinehas are dead, and the Arke of God is taken.

Και απεκρίθη ο μηνυτής και είπεν, Έφυγεν ο Ισραήλ έμπροσθεν των Φιλισταίων, και έτι μεγάλη σφαγή έγεινεν εις τον λαόν· και προσέτι αμφότεροι οι υιοί σου, Οφνεί και Φινεές, απέθανον· και η κιβωτός του Θεού επιάσθη.

18 And when he had made mention of the Arke of God, Eli fell from his seate backward by the side of the gate, and his necke was broken, and he dyed: for he was an olde man and heauie: and he had iudged Israel fourtie yeeres.

Και καθώς ανέφερε περί της κιβωτού του Θεού, ο Ηλεί έπεσεν εκ της καθέδρας εις τα οπίσθια προς το πλάγιον της πύλης, και συνετρίβη ο τράχηλος αυτού, και απέθανε· διότι ήτο γέρων ο άνθρωπος και βαρύς. Έκρινε δε αυτός τον Ισραήλ τεσσαράκοντα έτη.

19 And his daughter in lawe Phinehas wife was with childe neere her trauell: and when she heard the report that the Arke of God was taken, and that her father in lawe and her husband were dead, she bowed her selfe, and trauailed: for her paines came vpon her.

Και η νύμφη αυτού, η γυνή του Φινεές, ούσα έγκυος, ετοίμη να γεννήση, ως ήκουσε την αγγελίαν, ότι η κιβωτός του Θεού επιάσθη και ότι ο πενθερός αυτής και ο ανήρ αυτής απέθανον, εκυρτώθη και εγέννησε· διότι ήλθον εις αυτήν οι πόνοι.

20 And about the time of her death, the women that stoode about her, sayd vnto her, Feare not: for thou hast borne a sonne: but she answered not, nor regarded it.

Και καθ' ον καιρόν απέθνησκεν, αι γυναίκες αι παριστάμεναι είπον προς αυτήν, Μη φοβού· διότι εγέννησας υιόν. Εκείνη όμως δεν απεκρίθη ουδέ έβαλεν αυτό εις την καρδίαν αυτής.

21 And she named the childe Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel, because the Arke of God was taken, and because of her father in lawe and her husband.

Και εκάλεσε το παιδίον Ιχαβώδ, λέγουσα, Η δόξα έφυγεν εκ του Ισραήλ· διότι η κιβωτός του Θεού επιάσθη, και διότι ο πενθερός αυτής και ο ανήρ αυτής απέθανον.

22 She sayde againe, The glory is departed from Israel: for the Arke of God is taken.

Και είπεν, Η δόξα έφυγεν εκ του Ισραήλ· διότι επιάσθη η κιβωτός του Θεού.
