1 Samuel 11
1 Then Nahash the Ammonite came vp, and besieged Iabesh Gilead: and all the men of Iabesh saide vnto Nahash, Make a couenant with vs, and we will be thy seruants.
Naas l’Ammonite monta et campa devant Jabès en Galaad. Tous les habitants de Jabès dirent à Naas: « Conclus une alliance avec nous, et nous te servirons. »
2 And Nahash ye Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a couenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eies, and bring that shame vpon all Israel.
Mais Naas l’Ammonite leur répondit: « Je traiterai avec vous à la condition que je vous crève à tous l’œil droit, et que je mette ainsi un opprobre sur tout Israël. »
3 To whome the Elders of Iabesh said, Giue vs seuen daies respet, that we may sende messengers vnto all the coastes of Israel: and then if no man deliuer vs, we will come out to thee.
Les anciens de Jabès lui dirent: « Accorde-nous un délai de sept jours, et nous enverrons des messagers dans tout le territoire d’Israël; et s’il n’y a personne qui nous secoure, nous nous rendrons à toi. »
4 Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and tolde these tidings in the eares of the people: and all the people lift vp their voices and wept.
Les messagers vinrent à Gabaa de Saül, et dirent ces choses aux oreilles du peuple; et tout le peuple éleva la voix et pleura.
5 And behold, Saul came following the cattell out of the fielde, and Saul saide, What aileth this people, that they weepe? And they tolde him the tidings of the men of Iabesh.
Et voici que Saül revenait des champs, derrière ses bœufs; et Saül dit: « Qu’a donc le peuple, pour pleurer? » On lui rapporta ce qu’avaient dit les hommes de Jabès.
6 Then the Spirit of God came vpon Saul, when he heard those tidings, and he was exceeding angrie,
Dès qu’il eut entendu ces paroles, l’Esprit de Yahweh saisit Saül, et sa colère s’enflamma.
7 And tooke a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coastes of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoeuer commeth not foorth after Saul, and after Samuel, so shall his oxen be serued. And the feare of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
Ayant pris une paire de bœufs, il les coupa en morceau, et il en envoya par les messagers dans tout le territoire d’Israël, en disant: « Quiconque ne marchera pas à la suite de Saül et de Samuel, aura ses bœufs traités de la même manière. » La terreur de Yahweh tomba sur le peuple, et il se mit en marche comme un seul homme.
8 And when he nombred them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundreth thousande men: and the men of Iudah thirtie thousand.
Saül en fit la revue à Bezech: les enfants d’Israël étaient trois cent mille, et les hommes de Juda trente mille.
9 Then they saide vnto the messengers that came, So say vnto the men of Iabesh Gilead, To morowe by then the sunne be hote, ye shall haue helpe. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Iabesh, which were glad.
Ils dirent aux messagers qui étaient venus: « Vous parlerez aussi aux hommes de Jabès en Galaad: Demain vous aurez du secours, quand le soleil sera dans sa force. » Les messagers reportèrent cette nouvelle aux hommes de Jabès, qui furent remplis de joie.
10 Therefore the men of Iabesh sayde, To morowe we will come out vnto you, and yee shall doe with vs all that pleaseth you.
Et les hommes de Jabès dirent aux Ammonites: « Demain, nous nous rendrons à vous, et vous agirez envers nous comme bon vous semblera. »
11 And when the morowe was come, Saul put the people in three bandes, and they came in vpon the hoste in the morning watche, and slewe the Ammonites vntill the heate of the day: and they that remained, were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
Le lendemain, Saül disposa le peuple en trois corps; ils pénétrèrent dans le camp des Ammonites à la veille du matin, et ils les battirent jusqu’à la chaleur du jour. Ceux qui échappèrent furent dispersés, de telle sorte qu’il n’en resta pas deux ensemble.
12 Then the people said vnto Samuel, Who is he that saide, Shall Saul reigne ouer vs? bring those men that we may slaie them.
Le peuple dit à Samuel: « Qui est-ce qui disait: Saül régnera-t-il sur nous? Livrez- nous ces gens, et nous les mettrons à mort. »
13 But Saul said, There shall no man die this day: for to day the Lord hath saued Israel.
Mais Saül dit: « Personne ne sera mis à mort en ce jour, car aujourd’hui Yahweh a opéré le salut d’Israël. »
14 Then saide Samuel vnto ye people, Come, that we may goe to Gilgal, and renue the kingdome there.
Et Samuel dit au peuple: « Venez et allons à Galgala, pour y renouveler la royauté. »
15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and made Saul King there before the Lord in Gilgal: and there they offered peace offerings before the Lord: and there Saul and all the men of Israel reioyced exceedingly.
Tout le peuple se rendit à Galgala, et ils établirent Saül pour roi devant Yahweh, à Galgala, et ils offrirent en ce lieu des sacrifices pacifiques devant Yahweh; et Saül et tous les hommes d’Israël s’y livrèrent à de grandes réjouissances.
