1 Kings 3
1 Salomon then made affinitie with Pharaoh King of Egypt, and tooke Pharaohs daughter, and brought her into the citie of Dauid, vntill hee had made an ende of buylding his owne house, and the house of the Lord, and the wall of Ierusalem round about.
La royauté fut donc affermie dans la main de Salomon; il s’unit par alliance à Pharaon, roi d’Egypte; car il prit sa fille, et il l’amena dans la cité de David, jusqu’à ce qu’il eût achevé de bâtir sa maison, et la maison du Seigneur, et le mur de Jérusalem tout autour.
2 Only the people sacrificed in the hie places, because there was no house buylt vnto the name of the Lord, vntill those dayes.
Cependant le peuple immolait sur les hauts lieux; car il n’avait pas été bâti de temple au nom du Seigneur jusqu’à ce jour.
3 And Salomon loued the Lord, walking in the ordinances of Dauid his father: onely he sacrificed and offred incense in the hie places.
Or, Salomon aima le Seigneur, marchant selon les préceptes de David son père, excepté qu’il sacrifiait sur les hauts lieux, et qu’il brûlait de l’encens.
4 And the King went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the chiefe hie place: a thousand burnt offrings did Salomon offer vpon that altar.
C’est pourquoi il s’en alla à Gabaon pour y sacrifier; car c’était le haut lieu le plus grand; Salomon offrit mille hosties en holocauste sur cet autel à Gabaon.
5 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Salomon in a dreame by night: and God sayd, Aske what I shall giue thee.
Or le Seigneur apparut à Salomon en songe pendant la nuit, disant: Demande-moi ce que tu veux que je te donne.
6 And Salomon sayd, Thou hast shewed vnto thy seruant Dauid my father great mercie, when hee walked before thee in trueth, and in righteousnesse, and in vprightnes of heart with thee: and thou hast kept for him this great mercie, and hast giuen him a sonne, to sit on his throne, as appeareth this day.
Et Salomon répondit: Vous avez fait à David mon père, votre serviteur, une grande miséricorde, selon qu’il a marché en votre présence dans la vérité, dans la justice et dans la droiture de cœur envers vous; vous lui avez conservé cette grande miséricorde; et vous lui avez donné un fils qui devait être assis sur son trône, comme il l’est aujourd’hui.
7 And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy seruant King in steade of Dauid my father: and I am but a yong childe, and know not howe to go out and in.
Et maintenant, Seigneur Dieu, vous avez fait régner votre serviteur en la place de David, mon père: mais moi, je suis un petit enfant, ignorant mon entrée et ma sortie.
8 And thy seruant is in the mids of thy people, which thou hast chosen, euen a great people which cannot be told nor nobred for multitude.
Et votre serviteur est au milieu du peuple que vous avez choisi; d’un peuple infini, qui ne peut être nombre ni supputé à cause de sa multitude.
9 Giue therefore vnto thy seruant an vnderstanding heart, to iudge thy people, that I may discerne betweene good and bad: for who is able to iudge this thy mightie people?
Vous donnerez donc à votre serviteur un cœur docile, afin qu’il puisse juger votre peuple et discerner entre le bien et le mal; car qui pourra juger ce peuple-ci, ce peuple vôtre, si nombreux?
10 And this pleased the Lord well, that Salomon had desired this thing.
Elle plut donc aux yeux du Seigneur la parole par laquelle Salomon avait demandé une telle chose.
11 And God sayde vnto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thy selfe long life, neyther hast asked riches for thy selfe, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies, but hast asked for thy selfe vnderstanding to heare iudgement,
Et le Seigneur dit à Salomon: Parce que tu as demandé cette chose, et que tu n’as point désiré pour toi des jours nombreux, ni des richesses, ou les âmes de tes ennemis, mais que tu as demandé pour loi la sagesse, afin de discerner ce qui est juste,
12 Beholde, I haue done according to thy wordes: lo, I haue giuen thee a wise and an vnderstanding heart, so that there hath bene none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall arise the like vnto thee.
Voilà que j’ai fait envers toi selon tes paroles, et je t’ai donné un cœur sage et intelligent, tellement que nul avant toi n’a été semblable à toi, et qu’après toi il ne s’en élèvera point.
13 And I haue also giuen thee that, which thou hast not asked, both riches and honour, so that among the Kings there shall be none like vnto thee all thy dayes.
Mais même ce que tu n’as point demandé, je te l’ai donné, les richesses et la gloire, en sorte que personne n’aura été semblable à toi parmi les rois dans tous les jours passés.
14 And if thou wilt walke in my wayes, to keepe mine ordinances and my commandements, as thy father Dauid did walke, I will prolong thy dayes.
Or, si tu marches dans mes voies, et que tu gardes mes préceptes et mes commandements, comme a marché ton père, je prolongerai tes jours.
15 And when Salomon awoke, behold, it was a dreame, and he came to Ierusalem, and stoode before the Arke of the couenant of the Lord, and offred burnt offrings and made peace offrings, and made a feast to all his seruants.
Ainsi s’éveilla Salomon, et il comprit que c’était un songe; et, lorsqu’il fut venu à Jérusalem, il se présenta devant l’arche de l’alliance du Seigneur, offrit des holocaustes, sacrifia des victimes pacifiques, et fit un grand festin à tous ses serviteurs.
16 Then came two harlots vnto the King, and stoode before him.
Alors vinrent deux femmes de mauvaise vie vers le roi, et se présentèrent devant lui;
17 And the one woman sayd, Oh my lorde, I and this woman dwell in one house, and I was deliuered of a childe with her in the house.
Et l’une dit: Je vous conjure, mon seigneur: moi et cette femme, nous habitions dans une même maison, et j’ai enfanté auprès d’elle dans la chambre.
18 And the third day after that I was deliuered, this woman was deliuered also: and we were in the house together: no stranger was with vs in the house, saue we twaine.
Mais le troisième jour après que moi j’ai enfanté, elle a enfanté, elle aussi, et nous étions ensemble, nul autre n’était dans la maison, excepté nous deux.
19 And this womans sonne died in the night: for she ouerlay him.
Or le fils de cette femme est mort pendant la nuit; car en dormant elle l’a étouffé.
20 And she rose at midnight, and tooke my sonne from my side, while thine handmaide slept, and layde him in her bosome, and layde her dead sonne in my bosome.
Et, se levant dans le silence d’une profonde nuit, elle a pris mon fils à mon côté, pendant que je dormais, moi, votre servante, et l’a placé sur son sein; mais son fils, qui était mort, elle l’a posé sur mon sein.
21 And when I rose in the morning to giue my sonne sucke, beholde, he was dead: and when I had well considered him in the morning, beholde, it was not my sonne, whom I had borne.
Et lorsque je me suis levée le matin pour donner du lait à mon fils, il a paru mort; et, le considérant plus attentivement au grand jour, j’ai reconnu que ce n’était pas le mien que j’avais enfanté.
22 Then the other woman sayd, Nay, but my sonne liueth, and thy sonne is dead. Againe she sayde, No, but thy sonne is dead, and mine aliue: thus they spake before the King.
Et l’autre femme répondit: Il n’en est pas ainsi que tu dis; mais ton fils est mort, et le mien vit. Au contraire, celle-là disait: Tu mens; car c’est mon fils qui vit, et le tien est mort. Et c’est de cette manière qu’elles disputaient devant le roi.
23 Then sayde the King, She sayth, This that liueth is my sonne, and the dead is thy sonne: and the other sayth, Nay, but the dead is thy sonne, and the liuing is my sonne.
Alors le roi dit: Celle-ci dit: Mon fils vit, et le tien est mort; et celle-là répond: Non; mais c’est ton fils qui est mort, et le mien vit.
24 Then the King said, Bring me a sworde: and they brought out a sworde before the King.
Le roi dit donc: Apportez-moi un glaive. Et lorsqu’on eut apporté le glaive devant le roi,
25 And the King sayde, Deuide ye the liuing child in twaine, and giue the one halfe to the one, and the other halfe to the other.
Coupez, dit-il, l’enfant vivant en deux parties, et donnez la moitié à l’une et la moitié à l’autre.
26 Then spake the woman, whose the liuing child was, vnto the King, for her compassion was kindled toward her sonne, and she sayde, Oh my lorde, giue her the liuing childe, and slay him not: but the other sayde, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but deuide it.
Alors la femme dont le fils était vivant dit au roi (car ses entrailles furent émues pour son fils): Je vous conjure, seigneur, donnez-lui l’enfant vivant, et ne le tuez point. Au contraire, l’autre disait: Qu’il ne soit ni à moi ni à toi; mais qu’il soit partagé.
27 Then the King answered, and sayde, Giue her the liuing childe, and slay him not: this is his mother.
Le roi répondit, et dit: Donnez à celle-ci l’enfant vivant, et qu’il ne soit point tué; car c’est elle qui est sa mère.
28 And all Israel heard the iudgement, which the King had iudged, and they feared the King: for they sawe that the wisedome of God was in him to doe iustice.
C’est pourquoi tout Israël apprit le jugement qu’avait rendu le roi; et ils craignirent le roi, voyant que la sagesse de Dieu était en lui pour rendre la justice.
