1 Kings 22
1 And they continued three yeere without warre betweene Aram and Israel.
Drie jaren bleef het nu rustig, en was er geen oorlog tussen Aram en Israël.
2 And in the third yeere did Iehoshaphat the King of Iudah come downe to ye King of Israel.
Maar toen in het derde jaar koning Josafat van Juda bij den koning van Israël op bezoek was,
3 (Then the King of Israel saide vnto his seruants, Knowe yee not that Ramoth Gilead was ours? and wee stay, and take it not out of ye hand of the King of Aram?)
sprak de koning van Israël tot zijn hof: Weet gij wel, dat Rama in Gilad van ons is? En wij blijven maar rustig zitten, in plaats van het den koning van Aram te ontnemen.
4 And he sayde vnto Iehoshaphat, Wilt thou goe with mee to battel against Ramoth Gilead? And Iehoshaphat saide vnto the King of Israel, I am as thou art, my people as thy people, and mine horses as thine horses.
En hij vroeg Josafat: Wilt gij met mij ten strijde trekken naar Rama in Gilad? En Josafat verzekerde den koning van Israël: Ik en gij zijn één; mijn volk is uw volk en mijn paarden zijn uw paarden!
5 Then Iehoshaphat saide vnto the King of Israel, Aske counsaile, I pray thee, of the Lord to day.
Toch verzocht Josafat den koning van Israël: Vraag echter eerst, wat Jahweh zegt.
6 Then the King of Israel gathered the prophets vpon a foure hundreth men, and said vnto them, Shal I go against Ramoth Gilead to battel, or shall I let it alone? And they said, Go vp: for ye Lord shall deliuer it into the hands of the King.
Toen ontbood de koning van Israël de profeten, tezamen ongeveer vier honderd man. Hij vroeg hun: Zal ik tegen Rama in Gilad ten strijde trekken, of niet? Zij antwoordden: Trek op; Jahweh levert het aan den koning over.
7 And Iehoshaphat said, Is there here neuer a Prophet of the Lord more, that we might inquire of him?
Maar Josafat vroeg: Is hier geen profeet van Jahweh meer, dien we kunnen raadplegen?
8 And the King of Israel said vnto Iehoshaphat, There is yet one man (Michaiah the sonne of Imlah) by whom we may aske counsel of the Lord, but I hate him: for he doeth not prophecie good vnto me, but euill. And Iehoshaphat sayd, Let not the King say so.
De koning van Israël antwoordde: Er is nog één man, door wien wij Jahweh kunnen raadplegen. Maar ik heb een hekel aan hem; want hij voorspelt mij nooit iets goeds, altijd maar kwaad. Het is Mikájehoe, de zoon van Jimla. Maar Josafat zei: De koning moet zo iets niet zeggen.
9 Then the King of Israel called an Eunuche, and sayde, Call quickely Michaiah the sonne of Imlah.
Toen riep de koning van Israël een kamerdienaar en zei: Haal vlug Mikájehoe, den zoon van Jimla.
10 And the King of Israel and Iehoshaphat the King of Iudah sate either of them on his throne in their apparell in the voyde place at the entring in of the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets prophecied before them.
Intussen waren de koning van Israël en Josafat, de koning van Juda, in ambtsgewaad op hun tronen gaan zitten, op de open plaats bij de poort van Samaria, en bleven al de profeten voor hen profeteren.
11 And Zidkiiah the sonne of Chenaanah made him hornes of yron, and sayd, Thus sayth the Lord, With these shalt thou push the Aramites, vntill thou hast consumed them.
Een zekere Sidki-ja, de zoon van Kenaäna, had zich ijzeren horens gemaakt, en zeide: Zo spreekt Jahweh! Hiermee zult gij de Arameën neerstoten tot verdelgens toe.
12 And all the prophets prophecied so, saying, Goe vp to Ramoth Gilead, and prosper: for the Lord shall deliuer it into the Kings hand.
Al de andere profeten profeteerden hetzelfde en riepen: Trek op naar Rama in Gilad! Gij zult zeker slagen; want Jahweh heeft het aan den koning overgeleverd.
13 And the messenger that was gone to call Michaiah spake vnto him, saying, Beholde now, the wordes of the prophets declare good vnto the King with one accorde: let thy word therefore, I pray thee, be like the worde of one of them, and speake thou good.
De bode, die Mikájehoe was gaan roepen, zeide tot hem: Zie eens; eenstemmig hebben de profeten den koning een gunstig antwoord gegeven; laat ook uw antwoord zijn als het hunne, en voorspel iets goeds.
14 And Michaiah saide, As the Lord liueth, whatsoeuer the Lord sayth vnto me, that will I speake.
Maar Mikájehoe zeide: Zo waar Jahweh leeft; wat Jahweh mij zegt, zal ik spreken!
15 So he came to the King, and the King said vnto him, Michaiah, shall we go against Ramoth Gilead to battel, or shall we leaue off? And he answered him, Goe vp, and prosper: and the Lord shall deliuer it into the hand of the King.
Toen hij nu bij den koning gekomen was, zeide deze tot hem: Mikájehoe, zullen wij naar Rama in Gilad ten strijde trekken of niet? Hij antwoordde hem: Trek op; ge zult zeker slagen; want Jahweh heeft het aan u overgeleverd.
16 And the King said vnto him, How oft shall I charge thee, that thou tell me nothing but that which is true in the Name of the Lord?
De koning snauwde hem toe: Hoe dikwijls moet ik u bezweren, mij in de naam van Jahweh niets dan de waarheid te zeggen?
17 Then he said, I sawe all Israel scattered vpon the mountaines, as sheepe that had no shepheard. And the Lord sayde, These haue no master, let euery man returne vnto his house in peace.
Maar nu sprak hij: Ik zag heel Israël over de bergen verstrooid als schapen zonder herder! En Jahweh sprak: Ze hebben geen heer; laat ze rustig naar huis terugkeren!
18 (And the King of Israel saide vnto Iehoshaphat, Did I not tell thee, that he would prophecie no good vnto me, but euill?)
Toen zei de koning van Israël tot Josafat: Heb ik het u niet gezegd? Hij voorspelt mij nooit iets goeds, altijd maar kwaad.
19 Againe he said, Heare thou therefore the worde of the Lord. I sawe the Lord sit on his throne, and all the hoste of heauen stood about him on his right hand and on his left hand.
Maar Mikájehoe sprak: Dat is niet waar! Luister niettemin naar het woord van Jahweh! Ik zag Jahweh op zijn troon, met het hemelse heir rechts en links om Hem heen.
20 And the Lord sayd, Who shall entise Ahab that he may go and fall at Ramoth Gilead? And one said on this maner, and another sayd on that maner.
Jahweh vroeg: Wie wil Achab overhalen, naar Rama in Gilad op te trekken, om daar te sneuvelen? En de een zei zus, de ander zo.
21 Then there came forth a spirit, and stoode before the Lord, and sayd, I wil entise him. And the Lord sayd vnto him, Wherewith?
Toen trad er een geest naar voren, ging voor Jahweh staan en zeide: Ik wil hem overhalen. Jahweh vroeg hem: Hoe?
22 And he sayd, I will goe out, and be a false spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. Then he sayd, Thou shalt entise him, and shalt also preuayle: goe forth, and doe so.
Hij antwoordde: Ik ga een leugengeest worden in de mond van al zijn profeten. Toen sprak Jahweh: Ge moogt hem bewerken, en ge zult slagen ook; ga heen en doe het.
23 Now therefore behold, the Lord hath put a lying spirite in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the Lord hath appoynted euill against thee.
Welnu, thans heeft Jahweh een leugengeest in de mond van al uw profeten gelegd, omdat Jahweh uw verderf heeft besloten.
24 Then Zidkiiah the sonne of Chenaanah came neere, and smote Michaiah on the cheeke and sayd, When went the Spirite of the Lord from me, to speake vnto thee?
Maar nu trad Sidki-jáhoe, de zoon van Kenaäna, vooruit, gaf Mikájehoe een slag in het gezicht, en zeide: Wat; zou de geest van Jahweh mij hebben verlaten, om te spreken tot u?
25 And Michaiah saide, Behold, thou shalt see in that day, when thou shalt goe from chamber to chamber to hide thee.
Mikájehoe antwoordde: Dat zult ge gewaar worden, wanneer ge van huis tot huis zult vluchten, om u te verbergen.
26 And the King of Israel sayd, Take Michaiah, and cary him vnto Amon the gouernour of the citie, and vnto Ioash the Kings sonne,
Nu sprak de koning van Israël: Neem Mikájehoe gevangen, en breng hem bij de stadsvoogd Amon en bij prins Joasj.
27 And say, Thus saith the King, Put this man in the prison house, and feede him with bread of affliction, and with water of affliction, vntill I returne in peace.
Zeg hun: De koning beveelt, hem gevangen te houden en hem slecht eten en drinken te geven, tot hij ongedeerd terugkomt.
28 And Michaiah sayde, If thou returne in peace, the Lord hath not spoken by me. And he sayd, Hearken all ye people.
Maar Mikájehoe sprak: Als gij ongedeerd terugkomt, heeft Jahweh niet door mij gesproken.
29 So the King of Israel and Iehoshaphat the King of Iudah went vp to Ramoth Gilead.
Zo trok dus de koning van Israël, met koning Josafat van Juda, naar Rama in Gilad.
30 And the King of Israel sayde to Iehoshaphat, I will change mine apparell, and will enter into the battell, but put thou on thine apparell. And the King of Israel changed himselfe, and went into the battel.
Maar de koning van Israël zei tot Josafat: Ik wil verkleed de strijd ingaan, doch gij kunt uw eigen kleren wel aanhouden. Hierop verkleedde de koning van Israël zich, voor hij ten strijde trok.
31 And the King of Aram commanded his two and thirtie captaines ouer his charets, saying, Fight neither with small, nor great, saue onely against the King of Israel.
Nu had de koning van Aram zijn twee en dertig bevelhebbers van de strijdwagens de opdracht gegeven: Valt niemand aan, wie het ook zij, maar alleen den koning van Israël.
32 And when the captaines of the charets saw Iehoshaphat, they sayd, Surely it is the King of Israel, and they turned to fight against him: and Iehoshaphat cryed.
Toen zij nu Josafat zagen, dachten ze: Dat is zeker de koning van Israël. En ze vielen op hem aan. Maar Josafat hief een krijgsgeschreeuw aan,
33 And when the captaines of the charets saw that he was not the King of Israel, they turned backe from him.
waardoor ze bemerkten, dat hij de koning van Israël niet was. Daarom lieten zij hem met rust.
34 Then a certaine man drewe a bow mightily and smote the King of Israel betweene the ioyntes of his brigandine. Wherefore he sayde vnto his charet man, Turne thine hand and cary me out of the hoste: for I am hurt.
Intussen richtte iemand op goed geluk af zijn boog, en trof den koning van Israël tussen de voegen van het pantser. Deze beval toen zijn wagenmenner: Wend de teugels, en breng mij van het slagveld; want ik ben gewond.
35 And the battel encreased that day, and the King stoode still in his charet against the Aramites, and dyed at euen: and the blood ran out of the wound into the middes of the charet.
Maar omdat de strijd toen juist op zijn hevigst was, moest de koning tegenover de Arameën rechtop in zijn wagen blijven staan, ofschoon het bloed uit zijn wonde in de bak van de wagen neersijpelde. Tegen de avond echter stierf hij.
36 And there went a proclamation thorowout the hoste about the going downe of the sunne, saying, Euery man to his citie, and euery man to his owne countrey.
En nog voor zonsondergang ging de kreet door het leger: Iedereen terug naar zijn stad, iedereen terug naar zijn land;
37 So the King died, and was brought to Samaria, and they buried the King in Samaria.
de koning is dood! In Samaria aangekomen, begroef men den koning;
38 And one washed the charet in the poole of Samaria, and the dogs licked vp his blood (and they washed his armour) according vnto the word of the Lord which he spake.
en toen men de wagen uitspoelde bij de vijver van Samaria, waar lichtekooien aan het baden waren, likten de honden zijn bloed op. Zo werd het woord vervuld, dat Jahweh gesproken had.
39 Concerning the rest of the actes of Ahab and all that he did, and the yuorie house which he built, and all the cities that he built, are they not written in the booke of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
De verdere geschiedenis van Achab, met al wat hij deed, ook de bouw van het ivoren paleis en de versterking der steden, is beschreven in het boek der kronieken van de koningen van Israël.
40 So Ahab slept with his fathers, and Ahaziah his sonne reigned in his stead.
Achab ging bij zijn vaderen te ruste, en zijn zoon Achazja volgde hem op.
41 And Iehoshaphat the sonne of Asa began to reigne vpon Iudah in the fourth yeere of Ahab King of Israel.
In het vierde jaar der regering van Achab over Israël werd Josafat, de zoon van Asa, koning van Juda.
42 Iehoshaphat was fiue and thirty yere olde, when he began to reigne, and reigned fiue and twentie yeere in Ierusalem. And his mothers name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.
Josafat was vijf en dertig jaar oud, toen hij koning werd, en hij regeerde vijf en twintig jaar te Jerusalem. Zijn moeder heette Azoeba, en was de dochter van Sjilchi.
43 And he walked in all the wayes of Asa his father, and declined not therefrom, but did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord. Neuerthelesse the hie places were not taken away: for the people offred still and burnt incense in the hie places.
In alles volgde hij het voorbeeld van zijn vader Asa, zonder daarvan af te wijken; zo deed hij wat recht was in de ogen van Jahweh. Alleen werden de offerhoogten niet afgeschaft, zodat het volk er bleef offeren en wierook branden.
44 And Iehoshaphat made peace with the King of Israel.
Josafat leefde in vrede met den koning van Israël.
45 Concerning the rest of the actes of Iehoshaphat, and his worthy deedes that he did, and his battels which he fought, are they not written in the booke of the Chronicles of the Kings of Iudah?
De verdere geschiedenis van Josafat, met de heldendaden, die hij verrichtte, en de oorlogen, die hij voerde, is beschreven in het boek der kronieken van de koningen van Juda.
46 And the Sodomites, which remayned in the dayes of his father Asa, he put cleane out of the land.
De verminkten, die tijdens de regering van zijn vader Asa nog waren overgebleven, verwijderde hij uit het land.
47 There was then no King in Edom: the deputie was King.
Er was toen geen koning in Edom, maar een stadhouder
48 Iehoshaphat made shippes of Tharshish to sayle to Ophir for golde, but they went not, for the shippes were broken at Ezion Gaber.
van koning Josafat. Deze bouwde een Tarsjisjvloot, om daarmee naar Ofir te varen om goud. Maar hij voer niet uit, daar de vloot schipbreuk leed bij Esjon-Géber.
49 Then sayde Ahaziah the sonne of Ahab vnto Iehoshaphat, Let my seruants goe with thy seruants in the ships, But Iehoshaphat would not.
Toen zei Achazja, de zoon van Achab, tot Josafat: Laat mijn volk met het uwe de schepen bemannen; maar Josafat weigerde.
50 And Iehoshaphat did sleepe with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the citie of Dauid his father, and Iehoram his sonne reigned in his stead.
Josafat ging bij zijn vaderen te ruste, en werd in de stad van zijn vader David bij zijn vaderen begraven. Zijn zoon Joram volgde hem op.
51 Ahaziah the sonne of Ahab began to reigne ouer Israel in Samaria, the seuenteenth yeere of Iehoshaphat King of Iudah, and reigned two yeeres ouer Israel.
In het zeventiende jaar der regering van Josafat over Juda werd Achazja, de zoon van Achab, te Samaria koning van Israël. Twee jaar regeerde hij over Israël.
52 But he did euill in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of his father, and in the way of his mother, and in the way of Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat, which made Israel to sinne.
Hij deed wat kwaad was in de ogen van Jahweh, en volgde het wangedrag na van zijn vader en moeder en dat van Jeroboam, den zoon van Nebat, die Israël tot zonde had verleid.
53 For he serued Baal and worshipped him, and prouoked the Lord God of Israel vnto wrath, according vnto all that his father had done.
Hij diende Báal en boog zich voor hem neer; zo tergde hij Jahweh, Israëls God, juist zoals zijn vaderen het hadden gedaan.
