1 Kings 20
1 Then Ben-hadad the King of Aram assembled all his armie, and two and thirtie Kings with him, with horses, and charets, and went vp and besieged Samaria, and fought against it.
Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, rassembla toute son armée, et, assisté de trente-deux rois, avec chars et cavalerie, il alla assiéger Samarie et diriger ses attaques contre elle.
2 And he sent messengers to Ahab King of Israel, into the citie,
Il envoya des messagers à Achab, roi d’Israël, dans la ville,
3 And sayd vnto him, Thus sayth Ben-hadad, Thy siluer and thy golde is mine: also thy women, and thy fayre children are mine.
pour lui dire: "Ainsi a parlé Ben-Hadad: A moi ton argent et ton or, à moi aussi tes femmes et tes fils, les meilleurs!"
4 And the King of Israel answered, and sayd, My lord King, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I haue.
Le roi d’Israël répondit: "Comme tu l’as dit, seigneur roi, je suis à toi, moi et tout ce qui m’appartient."
5 And when the messengers came againe, they said, Thus commandeth Ben-hadad, and saith, When I shall send vnto thee, and command, thou shalt deliuer me thy siluer and thy golde, and thy women, and thy children,
Les messagers revinrent et dirent: "Ainsi a parlé Ben-Hadad: Si je t’ai fait dire que tu dois me livrer ton argent et ton or, tes femmes et tes fils,
6 Or els I will sende my seruants vnto thee by to morow this time: and they shall search thine house, and the houses of thy seruants: and whatsoeuer is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall take it in their handes, and bring it away.
c’est qu’en effet, demain à pareille heure, j’enverrai mes serviteurs chez toi, qui fouilleront ta maison et les maisons de tes sujets, feront main basse sur tout ce que tu as de précieux et l’emporteront."
7 Then the King of Israel sent for all the Elders of the land, and sayd, Take heede, I pray you, and see how he seeketh mischiefe: for he sent vnto me for my wiues, and for my children, and for my siluer, and for my golde, and I denyed him not.
Le roi d’Israël manda tous les anciens du pays et leur dit: "Sachez et considérez que cet homme a de mauvais desseins, car il m’a fait réclamer mes femmes et mes fils, mon argent et mon or, et je ne les lui ai pas refusés."
8 And all the Elders, and all the people sayd to him, Hearken not vnto him, nor consent.
Tous les anciens et tout le peuple lui dirent: "Ne l’écoute pas, et ne consens point."
9 Wherefore hee sayde vnto the messengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my lorde the King, All that thou didddest sende for to thy seruant at the first time, that I will doe, but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him an answere.
Il répondit alors aux envoyés de Ben-Hadad: "Déclarez à mon seigneur le roi: Tout ce que tu as fait dire en premier lieu à ton serviteur, je le ferai; mais cela je ne puis le faire." Les envoyés partirent et lui rapportèrent la réponse.
10 And Ben-hadad sent vnto him, and sayde, The gods do so to me and more also, if the dust of Samaria be ynough to all the people that follow me, for euery man an handfull.
Ben-Hadad lui fit dire: "Qu’ainsi me traitent les dieux et pis encore, si la poussière de Samarie suffit pour remplir les mains du peuple qui me suit!"
11 And the King of Israel answered, and sayd, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth his harneis, boast himselfe, as he that putteth it off.
Le roi d’Israël fit transmettre cette réponse: "Celui qui ceint l’épée ne doit pas se vanter comme celui qui la dépose.
12 And when he heard that tidings, as he was with the Kings drinking in the pauilions, he sayd vnto his seruants, Bring forth your engines, and they set them against the citie.
En entendant cette réponse, Ben-Hadad, qui était en train de boire avec les rois sous les tentes, dit à ses serviteurs: "Préparez le siège." Et ils firent les apprêts contre la ville.
13 And beholde, there came a Prophet vnto Ahab King of Israel, saying, Thus sayeth the Lord, Hast thou seene all this great multitude? beholde, I will deliuer it into thine hande this day, that thou mayest knowe, that I am the Lord.
Or, un prophète, s’avançant vers Achab, roi d’Israël, lui dit: "Ainsi parle l’Eternel: Tu vois toute cette grande multitude? Eh bien! Je te la livrerai en ce jour, et tu reconnaîtras que je suis l’Eternel.
14 And Ahab sayd, By whome? And he sayde, Thus sayth the Lord, By the seruants of the princes of the prouinces. He sayde againe, Who shall order the battel? And he answered, Thou.
Avec l’aide de qui?" demanda Achab. "Ainsi dit le Seigneur, répondit le prophète: Avec l’aide des jeunes gens des gouverneurs de provinces. Qui, reprit-il, engagera la lutte? Toi-même," fut la réponse.
15 Then he nombred the seruantes of the princes of the prouinces, and they were two hundreth, two and thirtie: and after them he nombred the whole people of all the children of Israel, euen seuen thousand.
Alors il passa en revue les jeunes gens des gouverneurs de provinces, qui se trouvèrent au nombre de deux cent trente-deux, ensuite tout le peuple, tous les enfants d’Israël, au nombre de sept mille.
16 And they went out at noone: but Ben-hadad did drinke till he was drunken in the tentes, both he and the Kings: for two and thirtie Kings helped him.
Ils firent une sortie à midi, tandis que Ben-Hadad buvait à s’enivrer sous la tente, avec les trente-deux rois, ses auxiliaires.
17 So the seruants of the princes of the prouinces went out first: and Ben-hadad sent out, and they shewed him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.
Les jeunes gens des gouverneurs de provinces sortirent les premiers. Ben-Hadad s’informa, et on lui fit savoir que des hommes étaient sortis de Samarie.
18 And he sayde, Whether they be come out for peace, take them aliue: or whether they bee come out to fight, take them yet aliue.
"S’Ils viennent pour la paix, répondit-il, prenez-les vivants; s’ils viennent pour combattre, prenez-les aussi vivants."
19 So they came out of the citie, to wit, the seruants of the princes of the prouinces, and the hoste which followed them.
Or, ils étaient, en effet, sortis de la ville, d’abord les jeunes gens des gouverneurs de provinces, puis la troupe qui les suivait.
20 And they slew euery one his enemie: and the Aramites fled, and Israel pursued them: but Ben-hadad ye King of Aram escaped on an horse with his horsemen.
Ils frappèrent chacun son homme; les Syriens s’enfuirent, poursuivis par les Israélites; Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, put s’échapper à cheval, avec quelques cavaliers.
21 And the King of Israel went out, and smote the horses and charets, and with a great slaughter slew he the Aramites.
Le roi d’Israël fit une sortie, battit chevaux et chars, et infligea aux Syriens une grande défaite.
22 (For there had come a Prophet to the King of Israel, and had sayd vnto him, Goe, be of good courage, and consider, and take heede what thou doest: for when the yeere is gone about, the King of Aram wil come vp against thee)
Le prophète, abordant le roi d’Israël, lui dit: "Va, fortifie-toi, et avise à ce que tu dois faire, car, au retour de l’année, le roi de Syrie viendra t’attaquer."
23 Then the seruants of the King of Aram said vnto him, Their gods are gods of the moutaines, and therefore they ouercame vs: but let vs fight against them in the playne, and doubtlesse we shall ouercome them.
Les serviteurs du roi de Syrie lui dirent: "Leur dieu est un dieu de montagnes, c’est pourquoi ils nous ont vaincus; mais attaquons-les en plaine, on verra si nous ne sommes pas les plus forts.
24 And this doe, Take the Kings away, euery one out of his place, and place captaines for them.
Voici encore ce que tu dois faire: écarte les rois, chacun de son poste, et mets des gouverneurs à leur place.
25 And nomber thy selfe an armie, like the armie that thou hast lost, with such horses, and such charets, and we wil fight against them in the plaine, and doubtlesse we shall ouercome them: and he hearkened vnto their voyce, and did so.
Puis tu lèveras une armée égale à celle que tu as perdue, des chevaux et des chars aussi nombreux que les précédents, et nous les combattrons en plaine; on verra si nous n’avons pas le dessus." Il écouta leur avis et s’y conforma.
26 And after the yeere was gone about, Ben-hadad nombred the Aramites, and went vp to Aphek to fight against Israel.
Au retour de l’année, Ben-Hadad passa en revue les Syriens, puis monta vers Afek pour attaquer Israël.
27 And the children of Israel were nombred, and were all assembled and went against them, and the children of Israel pitched before them, like two litle flockes of kiddes: but the Aramites filled the countrey.
Les enfants d’Israël, ayant été passés en revue et approvisionnés, marchèrent à leur rencontre; ils campèrent vis-à-vis d’eux semblables à deux troupeaux de chèvres, tandis que les Syriens remplissaient la contrée.
28 And there came a man of God, and spake vnto the King of Israel, saying, Thus sayeth the Lord, Because the Aramites haue sayd, The Lord is the God of the mountaines, and not God of the valleis, therefore will I deliuer all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the Lord.
L’Homme de Dieu s’approcha et dit au roi d’Israël: "Ainsi a parlé l’Eternel: Puisque les Syriens ont dit: l’Eternel est un dieu de montagnes et n’est pas un dieu de vallées, je livrerai en ta main toute cette grande multitude; et vous saurez que je suis l’Eternel."
29 And they pitched one ouer against the other seuen dayes, and in the seuenth day the battel was ioyned: and the children of Israel slew of the Aramites an hundreth thousand footemen in one day.
Ils restèrent campés les uns vis-à-vis des autres durant sept jours. Le septième jour le combat s’engagea, et les Israélites battirent les Syriens, en leur tuant cent mille fantassins en un seul jour.
30 But the rest fled to Aphek into the citie: and there fel a wall vpon seuen and twentie thousand men that were left: and Ben-hadad fled into the citie, and came into a secret chamber.
Le reste s’enfuit vers Afek, cherchant un refuge dans la ville; mais la muraille s’écroula sur les vingt-sept mille hommes qui avaient échappé, tandis que Ben-Hadad, réfugié dans la ville, se retirait de chambre en chambre.
31 And his seruants sayd vnto him, Beholde nowe, we haue heard say that the Kings of the house of Israel are mercifull Kings: we pray thee, let vs put sacke cloth about our loynes, and ropes about our heads, and goe out to the King of Israel: it may be that he will saue thy life.
Ses serviteurs lui dirent: "Ecoute, de grâce: nous avons ouï dire que les rois de la maison d’Israël sont des rois généreux; eh bien! Entourons nos reins de cilices et nos têtes de cordes, et allons trouver le roi d’Israël. Peut-être épargnera—t-il ta vie."
32 Then they gyrded sackecloth about their loynes, and put ropes about their heads, and came to the King of Israel, and sayd, Thy seruant Ben-hadad sayth, I pray thee, let me liue: and he sayd, Is he yet aliue? he is my brother.
Et les reins ainsi entourés de cilices et la tête de cordes, ils se présentèrent au roi d’Israël en disant: "Ton serviteur Ben-Hadad te demande de lui laisser la vie." Il répondit: "ll vit donc encore? Il est mon frère."
33 Now the men tooke diliget heede, if they could catch any thing of him, and made haste, and sayd, Thy brother Ben-hadad. And he sayd, Go, bring him. So Ben-hadad came out vnto him, and he caused him to come vp vnto the chariot.
Les hommes, augurant bien de cette parole, s’en emparèrent aussitôt et dirent: "Ben—Hadad est ton frère! Allez, dit le roi, amenez-le." Ben-Hadad s’avança vers lui, et il le fit monter sur son char.
34 And Ben-hadad sayd vnto him, The cities, which my father tooke from thy father, I wil restore, and thou shalt make streetes for thee in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will let thee goe with this couenant. So he made a couenant with him, and let him goe.
Ben-Hadad lui dit: "Les villes que mon père a prises au tien, je les rendrai, et tu pourras te créer des routes à Damas, comme mon père en créa dans Samarie. Et moi, je te laisserai partir sous le bénéfice de ce traité." Et il lui dicta un traité, puis le laissa partir.
35 Then a certaine man of the children of the Prophets sayd vnto his neighbour by the comandement of the Lord, Smite me, I pray thee. But the man refused to smite him.
Or, un des disciples des prophètes dit à son collègue, par l’ordre du Seigneur: "Frappe-moi, je te prie." L’Autre refusa de le frapper.
36 Then sayd he vnto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voyce of the Lord, beholde, as soone as thou art departed from me, a lyon shall slay thee. So when he was departed from him, a lyon found him and slew him.
Il lui dit: "Puisque tu n’as pas écouté la parole du Seigneur, lorsque tu m’auras quitté, un lion t’attaquera". L’Ayant quitté, il rencontra un lion, qui le tua.
37 Then he founde another man, and sayde, Smite mee, I pray thee. And the man smote him, and in smiting wounded him.
Ayant rencontré un autre homme, il lui dit: "Frappe-moi, je te prie." L’Homme le frappa, lui faisant mainte blessure.
38 So the Prophet departed, and wayted for the King by the way, and disguised himselfe with ashes vpon his face.
Le prophète alla se présenter devant le roi, sur son chemin; il était déguisé, avec un bandeau sur les yeux.
39 And when the King came by, he cried vnto the King, and said, Thy seruant went into the middes of the battel: and beholde, there went away a man, whom another man brought vnto me, and sayd, Keepe this man: if he be lost, and want, thy life shall go for his life, or els thou shalt pay a talent of siluer.
Lorsque le roi passa, il l’implora en disant: "Ton serviteur était allé au milieu de la bataille, lorsqu’un homme vint à lui et lui amena un prisonnier en disant: Surveille cet homme; s’il venait à manquer, ta vie répondrait pour la sienne, ou tu aurais à payer un kikkar d’argent.
40 And as thy seruant had here and there to do, he was gone: And the King of Israel said vnto him, So shall thy iudgement be: thou hast giuen sentence.
Or, ton serviteur était occupé de côté et d’autre, de sorte que l’homme s’est échappé." Le roi d’Israël lui dit: "C’Est ton arrêt, tu l’as prononcé toi-même."
41 And hee hasted, and tooke the ashes away from his face: and the King of Israel knewe him that he was of the Prophets:
Aussitôt l’autre ôta le bandeau de dessus ses yeux, et le roi reconnut en lui un des prophètes.
42 And he said vnto him, Thus saith the Lord, Because thou hast let goe out of thine handes a man whom I appoynted to dye, thy life shall goe for his life, and thy people for his people.
Celui-ci lui dit: "Ainsi parle l’Eternel: Parce que tu as laissé partir celui que j’avais condamné, ta vie répondra pour la sienne, et ton peuple pour le sien."
43 And the King of Israel went to his house heauie and in displeasure, and came to Samaria.
Le roi d’Israël rentra chez lui, à Samarie, sombre et consterné.
