1 Kings 12

1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for al Israel were come to Sheche, to make him king

Roboamo andò a Sichem, perché tutto Israele era venuto a Sichem per farlo re.

2 And whe Ieroboam ye sonne of Nebat heard of it (who was yet in Egypt, whither Ieroboam had fled from king Salomon, and dwelt in Egypt)

Quando Geroboamo, figliuolo di Nebat, ebbe di ciò notizia, si trovava ancora in Egitto dov’era fuggito per scampare dal re Salomone; stava in Egitto,

3 Then they sent and called him: and Ieroboam and all the Congregation of Israel came, and spake vnto Rehoboam, saying,

e quivi lo mandarono a chiamare. Allora Geroboamo e tutta la raunanza d’Israele vennero a parlare a Roboamo, e gli dissero:

4 Thy father made our yoke grieuous: now therefore make thou the grieuous seruitude of thy father, and his sore yoke which he put vpon vs, lighter, and we will serue thee.

“Tuo padre ha reso duro il nostro giogo; ora rendi tu più lieve la dura servitù e il giogo pesante che tuo padre ci ha imposti, e noi ti serviremo”.

5 And he said vnto them, Depart yet for three dayes, then come againe to me. And the people departed.

Ed egli rispose loro: “Andatevene, e tornate da me fra tre giorni”. E il popolo se ne andò.

6 And King Rehoboam tooke counsell with the olde men that had stande before Salomon his father, while he yet liued, and sayde, What counsell giue ye, that I may make an answere to this people?

Il re Roboamo si consigliò coi vecchi ch’erano stati al servizio del re Salomone suo padre mentre era vivo, e disse: “Che mi consigliate voi di rispondere a questo popolo?”

7 And they spake vnto him, saying, If thou be a seruant vnto this people this day, and serue them, and answere them, and speake kinde wordes to them, they will be thy seruants for euer.

E quelli gli parlarono così: “Se oggi tu ti fai servo di questo popolo, se tu gli cedi, se gli rispondi e gli parli con bontà, ti sarà servo per sempre”.

8 But he forsooke the counsell that the olde men had giuen him, and asked counsell of the yong men that had bene brought vp with him, and waited on him.

Ma Roboamo abbandonò il consiglio datogli dai vecchi, e si consigliò coi giovani ch’eran cresciuti con lui ed erano al suo servizio,

9 And he said vnto them, What counsell giue ye, that we may answere this people, which haue spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke, which thy father did put vpon vs, lighter?

e disse loro: “Come consigliate voi che rispondiamo a questo popolo che m’ha parlato dicendo: Allevia il giogo che tuo padre ci ha imposto?”

10 Then the yong men that were brought vp with him, spake vnto him, saying, Thus shalt thou say vnto this people, that haue spoken vnto thee, and said, Thy father hath made our yoke heauie, but make thou it lighter vnto vs: euen thus shalt thou say vnto them, My least part shalbe bigger then my fathers loynes.

E i giovani ch’erano cresciuti con lui, gli parlarono così: “Ecco quel che dirai a questo popolo che s’è rivolto a te dicendo: Tuo padre ha reso pesante il nostro giogo, e tu ce lo allevia! Gli risponderai così: Il mio dito mignolo è più grosso del corpo di mio padre;

11 Now where as my father did burden you with a grieuous yoke, I will yet make your yoke heauier: my father hath chastised you with rods, but I will correct you with scourges.

ora, mio padre vi ha caricati d’un giogo pesante, ma io lo renderò più pesante ancora; mio padre vi ha castigati con la frusta, e io vi castigherò coi flagelli a punte”.

12 Then Ieroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me againe ye thirde day.

Tre giorni dopo, Geroboamo e tutto il popolo vennero da Roboamo, come aveva ordinato il re dicendo: “Tornate da me fra tre giorni”.

13 And the king answered the people sharpely, and left the old mens counsell that they gaue him,

E il re rispose aspramente, abbandonando il consiglio che i vecchi gli aveano dato;

14 And spake to them after the counsell of the yong men, saying, My father made your yoke grieuous, and I will make your yoke more grieuous: my father hath chastised you with rods, but I will correct you with scourges.

e parlò al popolo secondo il consiglio dei giovani, dicendo: “Mio padre ha reso pesante il vostro giogo, ma io lo renderò più pesante ancora; mio padre vi ha castigati con la frusta, e io vi castigherò coi flagelli a punte”.

15 And the King hearkened not vnto the people: for it was the ordinance of the Lord, that he might perfourme his saying, which the Lord had spoken by Ahiiah the Shilonite vnto Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat.

Così il re non diede ascolto al popolo; perché questa cosa era diretta dall’Eterno, affinché si adempisse la parola da lui detta per mezzo di Ahija di Scilo a Geroboamo, figliuolo di Nebat.

16 So when all Israel sawe that the King regarded them not, the people answered the King thus, saying, What portion haue we in Dauid? we haue none inheritance in the sonne of Ishai. To your tents, O Israel: nowe see to thine owne house, Dauid. So Israel departed vnto their tents.

E quando tutto il popolo d’Israele vide che il re non gli dava ascolto, rispose al re, dicendo: “Che abbiam noi da fare con Davide? Noi non abbiam nulla di comune col figliuolo d’Isai! Alle tue tende, o Israele! Provvedi ora tu alla tua casa, o Davide!” E Israele se ne andò alle sue tende.

17 Howbeit ouer the children of Israel, which dwelt in the cities of Iudah, did Rehoboam reigne still.

Ma sui figliuoli d’Israele che abitavano nelle città di Giuda, regnò Roboamo.

18 Nowe the King Rehoboam sent Adoram the receiuer of the tribute, and all Israel stoned him to death: then King Rehoboam made speede to get him vp to his charet, to flee to Ierusalem.

E il re Roboamo mandò loro Adoram, preposto alle comandate; ma tutto Israele lo lapidò, ed egli morì. E il re Roboamo salì in fretta sopra un carro per fuggire a Gerusalemme.

19 And Israel rebelled against the house of Dauid vnto this day.

Così Israele si ribellò alla casa di Davide, ed è rimasto ribelle fino al dì d’oggi.

20 And when all Israel had heard that Ieroboam was come againe, they sent and called him vnto the assemblie, and made him King ouer all Israel: none followed the house of Dauid, but the tribe of Iudah onely.

E quando tutto Israele ebbe udito che Geroboamo era tornato, lo mandò a chiamare perché venisse nella raunanza, e lo fece re su tutto Israele. Nessuno seguitò la casa di Davide, tranne la sola tribù di Giuda.

21 And when Rehoboam was come to Ierusalem, he gathered all the house of Iudah with the tribe of Beniamin an hundreth and foure score thousand of chosen men (which were good warriours) to fight against the house of Israel, and to bring the kingdome againe to Rehoboam the sonne of Salomon.

E Roboamo, giunto che fu a Gerusalemme, radunò tutta la casa di Giuda e la tribù di Beniamino, centottantamila uomini, guerrieri scelti, per combattere contro la casa d’Israele e restituire il regno a Roboamo, figliuolo di Salomone.

22 But the worde of God came vnto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

Ma la parola di Dio fu così rivolta a Scemaia, uomo di Dio:

23 Speake vnto Rehoboam the sonne of Salomon King of Iudah, and vnto all the house of Iudah and Beniamin, and the remnant of the people, saying,

“Parla a Roboamo, figliuolo di Salomone, re di Giuda, a tutta la casa di Giuda e di Beniamino e al resto del popolo, e di’ loro:

24 Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go vp, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: returne euery man to his house: for this thing is done by me. They obeyed therefore the worde of the Lord and returned, and departed, according to the worde of the Lord.

Così parla l’Eterno: Non salite a combattere contro i vostri fratelli, i figliuoli d’Israele! Ognuno se ne torni a casa sua; perché questo è avvenuto per voler mio”. Quelli ubbidirono alla parola dell’Eterno, e se ne tornaron via secondo la parola dell’Eterno.

25 Then Ieroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein, and went from thence, and built Penuel.

Geroboamo edificò Sichem nella contrada montuosa di Efraim, e vi si stabilì; poi uscì di là, ed edificò Penuel.

26 And Ieroboam thought in his heart, Nowe shall the kingdome returne to the house of Dauid.

E Geroboamo disse in cuor suo: “Ora il regno potrebbe benissimo tornare alla casa di Davide.

27 If this people goe vp and doe sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Ierusalem, then shall the heart of this people turne againe vnto their lorde, euen to Rehoboam King of Iudah: so shall they kill me and goe againe to Rehoboam King of Iudah.

Se questo popolo sale a Gerusalemme per offrir dei sacrifizi nella casa dell’Eterno, il suo cuore si volgerà verso il suo signore, verso Roboamo re di Giuda, e mi uccideranno, e torneranno a Roboamo re di Giuda”.

28 Whereupon the King tooke counsell, and made two calues of golde, and saide vnto them, It is too much for you to goe vp to Ierusalem: beholde, O Israel, thy gods, which brought thee vp out of the lande of Egypt.

Il re, quindi, dopo essersi consigliato, fece due vitelli d’oro e disse al popolo: “Siete ormai saliti abbastanza a Gerusalemme! O Israele, ecco i tuoi dèi, che ti hanno tratto dal paese d’Egitto!”

29 And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other set he in Dan.

E ne mise uno a Bethel, e l’altro a Dan.

30 And this thing turned to sinne: for the people went (because of the one) euen to Dan.

Questo diventò un’occasione di peccato; perché il popolo andava fino a Dan per presentarsi davanti ad uno di que’ vitelli.

31 Also he made an house of hie places, and made Priestes of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sonnes of Leui.

Egli fece anche delle case d’alti luoghi, e creò dei sacerdoti presi qua e là di fra il popolo, e che non erano de’ figliuoli di Levi.

32 And Ieroboam made a feast the fifteenth day of the eight moneth, like vnto the feast that is in Iudah, and offred on the altar. So did he in Beth-el and offered vnto the calues that he had made: and he placed in Beth-el the Priestes of the hie places, which he had made.

Geroboamo istituì pure una solennità nell’ottavo mese, nel quindicesimo giorno del mese, simile alla solennità che si celebrava in Giuda, e offrì dei sacrifizi sull’altare. Così fece a Bethel perché si offrissero sacrifizi ai vitelli ch’egli avea fatti; e a Bethel stabilì i sacerdoti degli alti luoghi che aveva eretti.

33 And he offered vpon the altar, which he had made in Beth-el, the fifteenth day of the eight moneth, (euen in the moneth which he had forged of his owne heart) and made a solemne feast vnto the children of Israel: and he went vp to the altar, to burne incense.

Il quindicesimo giorno dell’ottavo mese, mese che aveva scelto di sua testa, Geroboamo salì all’altare che aveva costruito a Bethel, fece una festa per i figliuoli d’Israele, e salì all’altare per offrire profumi.
