< Psalms 8 >
1 For the music director. On the gittith. A psalm of David. Lord, our Lord, your magnificent reputation fills the earth! Your majesty is greater than the heavens above,
To the Overseer, 'On the Gittith.' A Psalm of David. Jehovah, our Lord, How honourable Thy name in all the earth! Who settest thine honour on the heavens.
2 and is sung by the voices of children and infants. Your strength counters your opponents, silencing the enemy and the avenger.
From the mouths of infants and sucklings Thou hast founded strength, Because of Thine adversaries, To still an enemy and a self-avenger.
3 When I contemplate the heavens that your hands made, the moon and stars that you placed there,
For I see Thy heavens, a work of Thy fingers, Moon and stars that Thou didst establish.
4 What are human beings that you should concern yourself with them? What are people that you should care for them?
What [is] man that Thou rememberest him? The son of man that Thou inspectest him?
5 You created them a little lower than God, crowning them with glory and majesty.
And causest him to lack a little of Godhead, And with honour and majesty compassest him.
6 You put them in charge of all that you made, giving them authority over everything:
Thou dost cause him to rule Over the works of Thy hands, All Thou hast placed under his feet.
7 the sheep, the cattle, and the wild animals,
Sheep and oxen, all of them, And also beasts of the field,
8 the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea—everything that swims in the ocean.
Bird of the heavens, and fish of the sea, Passing through the paths of the seas!
9 Lord, our Lord, your magnificent reputation fills the earth!
Jehovah, our Lord, How honourable Thy name in all the earth!
