< Psalms 21 >

1 For the music director. A psalm of David. The king celebrates your strength, Lord; he is so happy you made him victorious!
Unto the end. A Psalm of David. In your virtue, Lord, the king will rejoice, and over your salvation, he will exult exceedingly.
2 You gave him everything he wanted; you didn't hold anything back he asked for.
You have granted him the desire of his heart, and you have not cheated him of the wish of his lips.
3 You welcomed him on his return with special blessings; you placed a crown of pure gold on his head.
For you have gone ahead of him with blessings of sweetness. You have placed a crown of precious stones on his head.
4 He asked you to give him a good life, and you gave him a long life, forever and ever.
He petitioned you for life, and you have granted him length of days, in the present time, and forever and ever.
5 Your victories brought him great glory; you granted him splendor and majesty.
Great is his glory in your salvation. Glory and great adornment, you will lay upon him.
6 You give him blessings forever. He is full of joy because you are with him.
For you will give him as a blessing forever and ever. You will make him rejoice with gladness in your presence.
7 For the king trusts in the Lord; he stands firm because of the trustworthy love of the Most High.
Because the king hopes in the Lord, and in the mercy of the Most High, he will not be disturbed.
8 You, the king, will find and capture all your enemies; you will seize everyone who hates you.
May your hand be found by all your enemies. May your right hand discover all those who hate you.
9 When you appear on the scene you will burn them up like in a furnace; the Lord in his anger will destroy them, burning them up with fire.
You will make them like an oven of fire, in the time of your presence. The Lord will stir them up with his wrath, and fire will devour them.
10 You will wipe out their children from the earth, their descendants from humankind.
You will destroy their fruit from the earth and their offspring from the sons of men.
11 Though they plot evil against you, their malicious schemes will not succeed.
For they have turned evils upon you; they have devised plans, which they have not been able to accomplish.
12 They will turn and run away when they see your arrows fired at them.
For you will make them turn their back; with your remnants, you will prepare their countenance.
13 Rise up, Lord, for you are strong! We will sing and praise your power!
Be exalted, Lord, by your own power. We will play music and sing psalms to your virtues.
