Psalms 106
1 Praise the Lord! Thank the Lord, for he is good! His trustworthy love lasts forever.
Halleluja! Looft Jahweh, want Hij is goed En zijn genade duurt eeuwig!
2 Who can give an account of all the wonderful things the Lord has done? Who can give him all the praise he is due?
Wie kan Jahweh’s machtige daden vermelden, En heel zijn glorie verkonden?
3 Happy are those who treat people fairly, who always do what is right.
Gelukkig hij, die de wet onderhoudt, En altijd het goede blijft doen!
4 Please remember me when you are generous to your people; think of me when you come to save.
Wees ons indachtig, o Jahweh, Om uw liefde voor uw volk; Zoek ons op met uw heil,
5 Let me see your chosen people prosperous; let me be happy together with your nation; let me share in being proud of you with those who belong to you.
Opdat wij het geluk uwer vrienden aanschouwen, Met uw blijde volk ons verblijden, Met uw erfdeel mogen roemen!
6 We have sinned just like our forefathers. We have done wrong. We are guilty.
Ach, wij hebben gezondigd met onze vaderen, Wij hebben misdreven en kwaad gedaan!
7 They didn't pay attention to the wonderful things you did. They didn't keep in mind how much you loved them, but chose to rebel at the sea, the Red Sea.
Onze vaderen in Egypte Hebben al niet op uw wonderen gelet; En zonder aan uw talrijke gunsten te denken, Zich bij de Rode Zee tegen den Allerhoogste verzet!
8 Even so he saved them because of the kind of person he is, and to show his power
Toch redde Hij hen om wille van zijn Naam, En om zijn almacht te tonen:
9 He gave his order to the Red Sea, and it dried up. He led his people across the seabed as if it were a desert.
Hij bedreigde de Rode Zee, ze liep droog, Hij leidde hen tussen de golven als door een uitgedroogd land.
10 He rescued them from those who hated them; he saved them from their enemies' power.
Hij redde hen uit de hand van hun haters, Verloste hen uit de macht van hun vijand;
11 The water drowned their enemies—none of them survived,
De wateren spoelden over hun vijanden heen, En geen bleef er over!
12 Then his people trusted in what he promised, and sang his praises.
Toen sloegen ze geloof aan zijn woorden, En zongen zijn lof.
13 But they quickly forgot what he had done for them, and they didn't listen to his advice.
Maar spoedig waren ze weer zijn werken vergeten, En wachtten zijn raadsbesluiten niet af;
14 They were filled with desperate cravings in the wilderness; they provoked God in the desert.
Ze gaven zich in de woestijn aan hun gulzigheid over, En stelden God op de proef in de steppe.
15 He gave them what they wanted, but sent them a plague as well.
Hij schonk hun wat ze Hem vroegen, Maar Hij liet ze er spoedig van walgen.
16 In the camp the people became jealous of Moses, and of Aaron, the Lord's holy priest.
Daarna werden ze in hun kamp afgunstig op Moses, En op Aäron, aan Jahweh gewijd.
17 The earth split open and swallowed up Dathan; it buried Abiram and his followers.
Maar de aarde spleet open, zwolg Datan in, En bedolf de bent van Abiram;
18 Fire broke out among them—a flame that burned them up.
Vuur verbrandde hun aanhang, Vlammen verteerden de bozen!
19 At Mount Sinai they made a calf, they bowed down before a metal idol.
Dan maakten ze een kalf bij de Horeb, En wierpen zich voor een afgietsel neer;
20 They replaced their God of glory with a bull that eats grass!
Ze verruilden hun Glorie Voor het beeld van een grasvretend rund.
21 They forgot God, their Savior, who had done marvelous things in Egypt;
Ze vergaten God, hun Verlosser Die grote dingen in Egypte had gedaan,
22 performing miracles in the land of Ham, doing amazing things at the Red Sea.
Wonderwerken in het land van Cham, Ontzaglijke daden bij de Rode Zee.
23 So he said he was going to destroy them But Moses, his chosen leader, placed himself between the Lord and the people to persuade the Lord not to destroy them in his anger.
En zeker had Hij hun verdelging beslist, Als Moses, zijn geliefde, er niet was geweest; Maar deze stelde zich tegen Hem in de bres, Om Hem te weerhouden, hen in zijn toorn te vernielen.
24 Later the people refused to enter the Promised Land; they didn't trust him to do as he'd promised.
Later versmaadden ze het heerlijke land, En sloegen geen geloof aan zijn woord;
25 They complained in their tents about the Lord, and refused to obey what he told them.
Ze begonnen in hun tenten te morren, En luisterden niet naar Jahweh’s stem.
26 So he raised his hand to give them a serious warning that he would bring them down in the wilderness,
Toen stak Hij zijn hand tegen hen op: Hij zou ze neerslaan in de woestijn,
27 that he would disperse their descendants among the heathen nations, scattering them among countries far away.
Hun zaad verstrooien onder de volken, Ze over vreemde landen verspreiden!
28 They gave their allegiance to Baal Peor, and ate food sacrificed to the dead.
Dan weer koppelden ze zich aan Báal-Peor, En aten de offers van levenloze wezens;
29 They provoked the Lord by what they did, making him angry, so a plague broke out among them.
Ze tergden Hem door hun gedrag, Zodat er een slachting onder hen woedde.
30 But Phinehas took a stand for the Lord and intervened, and the plague was stopped in its tracks.
Toen trad Pinechas op, om de misdaad te wreken, En de slachting hield op;
31 He has been considered as a man who lived right from that time on and for all generations.
Het werd hem tot verdienste gerekend, Van geslacht tot geslacht voor altijd.
32 They also angered him at the waters of Meribah where things went badly for Moses because of them.
Ook bij de wateren van Meriba hebben ze Hem getergd, En ging het Moses om hunnentwil slecht:
33 They upset him so much that he spoke without thinking in the heat of the moment.
Want ze hadden zijn stemming verbitterd, Zodat hem onbezonnen woorden ontsnapten.
34 They did not destroy the heathen peoples as the Lord had told them to do,
Ook verdelgden ze de volkeren niet, Zoals Jahweh het hun had bevolen;
35 but instead they joined in with them and adopted their way of life.
Maar ze vermengden zich met de heidenen, En leerden hun gewoonten aan:
36 They worshiped their pagan idols which became a trap for them.
Ze vereerden hun beelden, en die werden hun strik;
37 The even sacrificed their sons and daughters to these demons.
Ze brachten hun zonen en dochters aan de goden ten offer;
38 They shed the blood of innocent children, their sons and daughters, sacrificing them to the idols of Canaan. By doing so they defiled the land with blood.
Ze gingen onschuldig bloed vergieten, Het bloed van hun zonen en dochters; Ze offerden het aan de beelden van Kanaän, En het land werd door hun bloedschuld ontwijd.
39 The also defiled themselves by what they did: their actions were spiritual adultery.
Zo bezoedelden ze zich door eigen maaksels, En dreven overspel met het werk hunner handen!
40 So the Lord was angry with his people—he loathed those who belonged to him.
Toen werd Jahweh vergramd op zijn volk, En zijn erfdeel begon Hem te walgen:
41 He handed them over to the heathen nations. These people who hated them now became their rulers.
Hij leverde ze aan de heidenen uit, En hun haters werden hun meesters;
42 Their enemies dominated and subdued them with their power.
Ze werden verdrukt door hun vijand, Moesten bukken onder hun macht.
43 The Lord repeatedly rescued them, but they continued with their rebellious ideas, until they were finally destroyed by their own sins.
En al bracht Hij hun telkens verlossing, Ze bleven in hun opstand volharden! Maar werden ze door hun misdaad vermorzeld,
44 Despite all this, the Lord was moved by their suffering; he heard their sad cries.
Dan zag Hij neer op hun nood, zodra Hij hun smeken vernam;
45 He remembered the agreement he had made with them, and he held back because of his great kindness and love.
Dan was Hij voor hen zijn verbond weer indachtig, Had deernis met hen naar zijn grote ontferming;
46 He made the people who captured them treat them with mercy.
Dan liet Hij hen genade vinden, Bij die hen hadden weggevoerd.
47 Save us, Lord, our God! Bring us back together from among the nations, so we can thank you and declare how magnificent and holy you are.
Ach, red ons Jahweh, onze God, En breng ons uit het land der heidenen samen: Opdat wij uw heilige Naam mogen danken, En uw heerlijkheid prijzen!
48 How wonderful is the Lord, the God of Israel, who lives forever and ever! Let all the people say “Amen”! Praise the Lord!
Gezegend zij Jahweh, Israëls God, van eeuwigheid tot eeuwigheid! Laat heel het volk het herhalen: Amen! Halleluja!
