< Proverbs 29 >
1 Anyone who goes on stubbornly rejecting many warnings will be suddenly destroyed, without hope of healing.
A reprover is better than a stiff-necked man: for when the latter is suddenly set on fire, there shall be no remedy.
2 When good people are in charge, everybody celebrates; but when the wicked rule, everybody groans.
When the righteous are praised, the people will rejoice: but when the ungodly rule, men mourn.
3 A man who loves wisdom makes his father happy, but one who visits prostitutes throws away his money.
When a man loves wisdom, his father rejoices: but he that keeps harlots will waste wealth.
4 A king who rules justly makes the country secure, but one who asks for bribes will destroy it.
A righteous king establishes a country: but a transgressor destroys [it].
5 Those who flatter their friends lay a net to trip them up.
He that prepares a net in the way of his own friend, entangles his own feet in it.
6 Evil people are trapped by their own sins, but those who do right sing and celebrate.
A great snare [is spread] for a sinner: but the righteous shall be in joy and gladness.
7 Good people care about treating the poor fairly, but the wicked don't think about it at all.
A righteous man knows how to judge for the poor: but the ungodly understands not knowledge; and the poor man has not an understanding mind.
8 Cynical people can inflame a whole city, but the wise calm angry people down.
Lawless men burn down a city: but wise men turn away wrath.
9 When a wise man takes a stupid man to court, there's raging and ridicule, but nothing is settled.
A wise man shall judge nations: but a worthless man being angry laughs and fears not.
10 Murderers hate people of integrity, but those who live right try to help them.
Bloody men hate a holy [person], but the upright will seek his soul.
11 Stupid people let all their anger out, while wise people quietly hold it in.
A fool utters all is mind: but the wise reserves his in part.
12 A ruler who listens to lies will have nothing but wicked officials.
When a king hearkens to unjust language, all his subjects are transgressors.
13 Poor people and their oppressors have this in common: the Lord gives life to all of them.
When the creditor and debtor meet together, the Lord oversees them both.
14 If a king judges the poor fairly, he will have a long rule.
When a king judges the poor in truth, his throne shall be established for a testimony.
15 Discipline and correction provide wisdom, but a son left undisciplined is an embarrassment to his mother.
Stripes and reproofs give wisdom: but an erring child disgraces his parents.
16 When the wicked are in power, sin increases; but the good will see their downfall.
When the ungodly abound, sins abound: but when they fall, the righteous are warned.
17 Discipline your children and they won't give you any worries; they will make you very happy.
Chasten your son, and he shall give you rest; and he shall give honour to your soul.
18 Without a revelation from God, the people go out of control, but those who keep the law are happy.
There shall be no interpreter to a sinful nation: but he that observes the law is blessed.
19 A servant can't be disciplined by words alone; though they understand, they don't follow what they're told.
A stubborn servant will not be reproved by words: for even if he understands, still he will not obey.
20 Have you seen a man who speaks without thinking? There's more hope for stupid people than for him!
If you see a man hasty in [his] words, know that the fool has hope rather than he.
21 A servant indulged from childhood will in the end become unmanageable.
He that lives wantonly from a child, shall be a servant, and in the end shall grieve over himself.
22 Angry people stir up trouble, those with short tempers commit many sins.
A furious man stirs up strife, and a passionate man digs up sin.
23 If you're proud, you'll be humiliated; but if you're humble, you'll be honored.
Pride brings a man low, but the Lord upholds the humble-minded with honour.
24 A thief's partner hates his life; even under the threat of being cursed he can't tell the truth.
He that shares with a thief, hates his own soul: and if any having heard an oath uttered tell not of it,
25 Being afraid of people traps you, but if you trust in the Lord you're safe.
[they] fearing and reverencing men [unreasonably] have been overthrown, but he that trusts in the Lord shall rejoice. Ungodliness causes a man to stumble: but he that trusts in his master shall be safe.
26 Many people look for favors from a ruler, but justice comes from the Lord.
Many wait on the favour of rulers; but justice comes to a man from the Lord.
27 Good people hate those who are unjust; the wicked hate those who do what's right.
A righteous man is an abomination to an unrighteous man, and the direct way is an abomination to the sinner.
