< Numbers 26 >
1 After the plague was over, the Lord told Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron the priest,
And it came to pass after the plague, that the Lord spoke to Moses and Eleazar the priest, saying,
2 “Census all the Israelites by family—all those twenty years of age or older who are eligible for military service in the army of Israel.”
Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, according to the houses of their lineage, every one that goes forth to battle in Israel.
3 There on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan opposite Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest gave the order,
And Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke in Araboth of Moab at the Jordan by Jericho, saying,
4 “Census the men twenty years of age or older, following the instructions the Lord gave to Moses.” The following is the genealogical record of those who left the land of Egypt.
[This is the numbering] from twenty years old and upward as the Lord commanded Moses. And the sons of Israel that came out of Egypt [are as follows]:
5 These were the descendants of Reuben, Israel's firstborn: Hanoch, ancestor of the Hanochite family; Pallu, ancestor of the Palluite family;
Ruben [was] the firstborn of Israel: and the sons of Ruben, Enoch, and the family of Enoch; to Phallu belongs the family of the Phalluites.
6 Hezron, ancestor of the Hezronite family; and Carmi, ancestor of the Carmite family.
To Asron, the family of Asroni: to Charmi, the family of Charmi.
7 These were the families descended from Reuben and they numbered 43,730.
These [are] the families of Ruben; and their numbering was forty-three thousand and seven hundred and thirty.
And the sons of Phallu [were] Eliab, —
9 and Eliab's sons were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. (It was Dathan and Abiram, leaders chosen by the Israelites, who joined the rebellion against Moses and Aaron with the followers of Korah when they rebelled against the Lord.
and the sons of Eliab, Namuel, and Dathan, and Abiron: these [are] renowned men of the congregation; these are they that rose up against Moses and Aaron in the gathering of Core, in the rebellion against the Lord.
10 The earth opened up and swallowed them down, along with Korah. His followers died when the fire burned up 250 men. What happened to them was a warning to the Israelites.
And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up them and Core, when their assembly perished, when the fire devoured the two hundred and fifty, and they were made a sign.
11 But Korah's sons didn't die.)
But the sons of Core died not.
12 These were the descendants of Simeon by family: Nemuel, ancestor of the Nemuelite family; Jamin, ancestor of the Jaminite family; Jachin, ancestor of the Jachinite family;
And the sons of Symeon: —the family of the sons of Symeon: to Namuel, [belonged] the family of the Namuelites; to Jamin the family of the Jaminites; to Jachin the family of the Jachinites.
13 Zerah, ancestor of the Zerahite family; and Shaul, ancestor of the Shaulite family.
To Zara the family of the Zaraites; to Saul the family of the Saulites.
14 These were the families descended from Simeon and they numbered 22,200.
These [are] the families of Symeon according to their numbering, two and twenty thousand and two hundred.
15 These were the descendants of Gad by family: Zephon, ancestor of the Zephonite family; Haggi, ancestor of the Haggite family; Shuni, ancestor of the Shunite family;
And the sons of Juda, Er and Aunan; and Er and Aunan died in the land of Chanaan.
16 Ozni, ancestor of the Oznite family; Eri, ancestor of the Erite family;
And these were the sons of Juda, according to their families: to Selom [belonged] the family of the Selonites; to Phares, the family of the Pharesites; to Zara, the family of the Zaraites.
17 Arod, ancestor of the Arodite family; Areli, ancestor of the Arelite family.
And the sons of Phares were, to Asron, the family of the Asronites; to Jamun, the family of the Jamunites.
18 These were the families descended from Gad and they numbered 40,500.
These [are] the families of Juda according to their numbering, seventy-six thousand and five hundred.
19 The sons of Judah who died in Canaan were Er and Onan. These were the descendants of Judah by family:
And the sons of Issachar according to their families: to Thola, the family of the Tholaites; to Phua, the family of the Phuaites.
20 Shelah, ancestor of the Shelanite family; Perez, ancestor of the Perezite family; Zerah, ancestor of the Zerahite family.
To Jasub, the family of the Jasubites; to Samram, the family of the Samramites.
21 These were the descendants of Perez: Hezron, ancestor of the Hezronite family; and Hamul, ancestor of the Hamulite family.
These [are] the families of Issachar according to their numbering, sixty-four thousand and four hundred.
22 These were the families descended from Judah and they numbered 76,500.
The sons of Zabulon according to their families: to Sared, the family of the Saredites; to Allon, the family of the Allonites; to Allel, the family of the Allelites.
23 These were the descendants of Issachar by family: Tola, ancestor of the Tolaite family; Puvah, ancestor of the Punite family;
These [are] the families of Zabulon according to their numbering, sixty thousand and five hundred.
24 Jashub, ancestor of the Jashubite family; and Shimron, ancestor of the Shimronite family.
The sons of Gad according to their families: to Saphon, the family of the Saphonites; to Angi, the family of the Angites; to Suni, the family of the Sunites;
25 These were the families descended from Isaachar and they numbered 64,300.
to Azeni, the family of the Azenites; to Addi, the family of the Addites:
26 These were the descendants of Zebulun by family: Sered, ancestor of the Seredite family; Elon, ancestor of the Elonite family; and Jahleel, ancestor of the Jahleelite family.
to Aroadi, the family of the Aroadites; to Ariel, the family of the Arielites.
27 These were the families descended from Zebulun, and they numbered 60, 500.
These [are] the families of the children of Gad according to their numbering, forty-four thousand and five hundred.
28 These were descendants of Joseph by family through Manasseh and Ephraim:
The sons of Aser according to their families; to Jamin, the family of the Jaminites; to Jesu, the family of the Jesusites; to Baria, the family of the Bariaites.
29 The descendants of Manasseh: Machir (he was the father of Gilead), ancestor of the Machirite family; and Gilead, ancestor of the Gileadite family.
To Chober, the family of the Choberites; to Melchiel, the family of the Melchielites.
30 The descendants of Gilead: Izer, ancestor of the Iezerite family; Helek, ancestor of the Helekite family;
And the name of the daughter of Aser, Sara.
31 Asriel, ancestor of the Asrielite family; Shechem, ancestor of the Shechemite family;
These [are] the families of Aser according to their numbering, forty-three thousand and four hundred.
32 Shemida, ancestor of the Shemidaite family; and Hepher, ancestor of the Hepherite family.
The sons of Joseph according to their families, Manasse and Ephraim.
33 (Zelophehad, son of Hepher, didn't have any sons, only daughters. Their names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.)
The sons of Manasse. To Machir the family of the Machirites; and Machir begot Galaad: to Galaad, the family of the Galaadites.
34 These were the families descended from Manasseh, and they numbered 52,700.
And these [are] the sons of Galaad; to Achiezer, the family of the Achiezerites; to Cheleg, the family of the Chelegites.
35 These were the descendants of Ephraim by family: Shuthelah, ancestor of the Shuthelahite family; Becher, ancestor of the Becherite family; and Tahan, ancestor of the Tahanite family.
To Esriel, the family of the Esrielites; to Sychem, the family of the Sychemites.
36 The descendant of Shuthelah was Eran, ancestor of the Eranite family.
To Symaer, the family of the Symaerites; and to Opher, the family of the Opherites.
37 These were the families descended from Ephraim, and they numbered 32,500. These families were the descendants of Joseph.
And to Salpaad the son of Opher there were no sons, but daughters: and these [were] the names of the daughters of Salpaad; Mala, and Nua, and Egla, and Melcha, and Thersa.
38 These were the descendants of Benjamin by family: Bela, ancestor of the Belaite family; Ashbel, ancestor of the Ashbelite family; Ahiram, ancestor of the Ahiramite family;
These [are] the families of Manasse according to their numbering, fifty-two thousand and seven hundred.
39 Shupham, ancestor of the Shuphamite family; and Hupham, ancestor of the Huphamite family.
And these [are] the children of Ephraim; to Suthala, the family of the Suthalanites; to Tanach, the family of the Tanachites.
40 The descendants of Bela were Ard, ancestor of the Ardite family; and Naaman, ancestor of the Naamite family.
These [are] the sons of Suthala; to Eden, the family of the Edenites.
41 These were the families descended from Benjamin, and they numbered 45,600.
These [are] the families of Ephraim according to their numbering, thirty-two thousand and five hundred: these [are] the families of the children of Joseph according to their families.
42 These were the descendants of Dan by family: Shuham, ancestor of the Shuhamite families.
The sons of Benjamin according to their families; to Bale, the family of the Balites; to Asyber, the family of the Asyberites; to Jachiran, the family of the Jachiranites.
43 They were all Shuhamite families, and they numbered 64,400.
To Sophan, the family of the Sophanites.
44 These were the descendants of Asher by family: Imnah, ancestor of the Imnite family; Ishvi, ancestor of the Ishvite family; and Beriah, ancestor of the Beriite family.
And the sons of Bale were Adar and Noeman; to Adar, the family of the Adarites; and to Noeman, the family of the Noemanites.
45 The descendants of Beriah were Heber, ancestor of the Heberite family; and Malchiel, ancestor of the Malchielite family.
These [are] the sons of Benjamin by their families according to their numbering, thirty-five thousand and five hundred.
46 The name of Asher's daughter was Serah.
And the sons of Dan according to their families; to Same, the family of the Sameites; these [are] the families of Dan according to their families.
47 These were the families descended from Asher, and they numbered 53,400.
All the families of Samei according to their numbering, sixty-four thousand and four hundred.
48 These were the descendants of Naphtali by family: Jahzeel, ancestor of the Jahzeelite family; Guni, ancestor of the Gunite family;
The sons of Nephthali according to their families; to Asiel, the family of the Asielites; to Gauni, the family of the Gaunites.
49 Jezer, ancestor of the Jezerite family; and Shillem, ancestor of the Sheillemite family.
To Jeser, the family of the Jeserites; to Sellem, the family of the Sellemites.
50 These were the families descended from Naphtali, and they numbered 45,400.
These [are] the families of Nephthali, according to their numbering, forty thousand and three hundred.
51 The total of all those counted was 601,730.
This [is] the numbering of the children of Israel, six hundred and one thousand and seven hundred and thirty.
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
53 “Divide the land that is to be owned based on the number of those censused.
To these the land shall be divided, so that they may inherit according to the number of the names.
54 Give a larger area of land to large tribe, and a smaller area to a smaller tribe. Each tribe shall receive their allotment of land depending on their number counted in the census.
To the greater number you shall give the greater inheritance, and to the less number you shall give the less inheritance: to each one, as they have been numbered, shall their inheritance be given.
55 The land has to be divided up by casting lots. Everyone shall receive their allotted land based on the name of their ancestor's tribe.
The land shall be divided to the names by lot, they shall inherit according to the tribes of their families.
56 Every allocation of land is to be divided by casting lots among the tribes, whether large or small.”
You shall divide their inheritance by lot between the many and the few.
57 These were the Levites censused by family: Gershon, ancestor of the Gershonite family; Kohath, ancestor of the Kohathite family; and Merari, ancestor of the Merarite family.
And the sons of Levi according to their families; to Gedson, the family of the Gedsonites; to Caath, the family of the Caathites; to Merari, the family of the Merarites.
58 The following were the families of the Levites: the Libnite family, the Hebronite family, the Mahlite family, the Mushite family, and the Korahite family. Kohath was the father of Amram,
These [are] the families of the sons of Levi; the family of the Lobenites, the family of the Chebronites, the family of the Coreites, and the family of the Musites; and Caath begot Amram.
59 and the name of Amram's wife was Jochebed. She was a descendant of Levi, born while the Levites were in Egypt. She had children with Amram: Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.
And the name of his wife [was] Jochabed, daughter of Levi, who bore these to Levi in Egypt, and she bore to Amram, Aaron and Moses, and Mariam their sister.
60 Aaron's sons were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar,
And to Aaron were born both Nadab and Abiud, and Eleazar, and Ithamar.
61 but Nadab and Abihu died when they offered forbidden fire in the Lord's presence.
And Nadab and Abiud died when they offered strange fire before the Lord in the wilderness of Sina.
62 The number of the Levites censused totaled 23,000. This included every male one month old or older. However, they were not counted with the other Israelites, because no land allotment was given to them with the other Israelites.
And there were according to their numbering, twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and upward; for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because they have no inheritance in the midst of the children of Israel.
63 This is the record of those were censused by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan opposite Jericho.
And this [is] the numbering of Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in Araboth of Moab, at Jordan by Jericho.
64 However, they did not include a single one who had previously been censused by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Sinai Desert,
And among these there was not a man numbered by Moses and Aaron, whom, [even] the children of Israel, they numbered in the wilderness of Sinai.
65 because the Lord had told them that they would all die in the desert. No one was left except Caleb, son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun.
For the Lord said to them, They shall surely die in the wilderness; and there was not left even one of them, except Chaleb the son of Jephonne, and Joshua the [son] of Naue.
