< Matthew 3 >

1 Some time later John the Baptist appeared on the scene, proclaiming in the Judean desert,
Mu nnaku ezo Yokaana Omubatiza n’ajja ng’abuulira mu ddungu ly’e Buyudaaya ng’agamba nti,
2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has arrived!”
“Mwenenye, kubanga obwakabaka obw’omu ggulu bunaatera okutuuka.”
3 He was the one Isaiah spoke about when he said, “A voice is heard crying out in the desert, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord. Make the paths straight for him.’”
Oyo nnabbi Isaaya gwe yayogerako ng’agamba nti, “Mpulira eddoboozi ly’oyo ayogerera waggulu mu ddungu ng’agamba nti, ‘Mulongoose oluguudo lwa Mukama, muluŋŋamye amakubo ge!’”
4 John had clothes made of camel hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
Ebyambalo bya Yokaana byakolebwa mu bwoya bwa ŋŋamira, era nga yeesibya lukoba lwa ddiba. N’emmere ye yali nzige na mubisi gwa njuki.
5 People came to him from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and the entire Jordan region,
Abantu bangi ne bava mu Yerusaalemi ne mu Buyudaaya mwonna ne mu bifo ebiriraanye Yoludaani ne bajja mu ddungu okuwulira by’abuulira.
6 and were baptized in the Jordan River, publicly admitting their sins.
N’ababatiza mu mugga Yoludaani, nga baatula ebibi byabwe.
7 But when John saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to be baptized, he said to them, “You vipers' brood! Who warned you to run away from the coming judgment?
Naye bwe yalaba Abafalisaayo bangi n’Abasaddukaayo nga bajja okubatizibwa n’abagamba nti, “Mmwe, abaana b’essalambwa, ani yabalabula okudduka obusungu bwa Katonda obugenda okujja?
8 Show by what you do that you have truly repented,
Kale mubale ebibala ebiraga nti Mwenenyeza.
9 and don't presume to say proudly to yourselves, ‘Abraham is our father.’ I tell you that God could make children of Abraham from these stones.
Temulowooza mu mitima gyammwe nti, ‘Tuli bulungi kubanga tuli Bayudaaya, abaana ba Ibulayimu, tetufaayo, tetulina kye twetaaga.’ Ekyo tekibasigula. Mbategeeza nti, Katonda ayinza okufuula amayinja gano abaana ba Ibulayimu!
10 In fact the ax is ready to chop down the trees. Every tree that doesn't produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.
Kaakano embazzi ya Katonda eteekeddwa ku buli kikolo kya muti, omuti ogutabala bibala birungi, gutemebwa gusuulibwe mu muliro.
11 Yes, I baptize you in water to show repentance, but after me is coming one who is greater than I am. I'm not worthy even to remove his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
“Nze mbabatiza na mazzi okutuuka ku kwenenya, naye waliwo omulala ajja, oyo ye ansinga amaanyi era sisaanira na kukwata ngatto ze, oyo alibabatiza ne Mwoyo Mutukuvu n’omuliro.
12 He has his winnowing tool ready in his hand. He will clean up the threshing floor and gather the wheat into the storehouse, but he will burn the chaff with fire that can't be put out.”
Ekikuŋŋunta kiri mu mukono gwe, alirongoosa egguuliro lye. Eŋŋaano aligitereka mu tterekero lye, naye ebisusunku alibyokya mu muliro ogutazikira.”
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John.
Awo Yesu n’ava e Ggaliraaya n’ajja ku mugga Yoludaani, abatizibwe Yokaana.
14 But John tried to change his mind. He told Jesus, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me to baptize you?”
Naye Yokaana n’ayagala okugaana, n’agamba nti, “Nze neetaaga ggwe okumbatiza, naye ate gw’ojja gye ndi?”
15 “Please do so, because it's good for us to do what God says is right,” Jesus told him. So John agreed to do it.
Yesu n’amuddamu nti, “Kkiriza ombatize, kubanga kitugwanidde okutuukiriza obutuukirivu bwonna.” Awo Yokaana n’amukkiriza.
16 Immediately after he was baptized, Jesus came out of the water. The heavens were opened, and he saw God's Spirit like a dove descending, landing on him.
Awo amangwago Yesu nga yakamala okubatizibwa nga yaakava mu mazzi, eggulu ne libikkuka n’alaba Omwoyo wa Katonda ng’amukkako mu kifaananyi ky’ejjiba.
17 A voice from heaven said, “This is my son whom I love, who pleases me.”
Eddoboozi ne liva mu ggulu ne ligamba nti, “Ono ye Mwana wange omwagalwa gwe nsanyukira ennyo.”
