Judges 3

1 The following are the nations the Lord left and used to test all those Israelites who had not known what it was like to be part of any of the wars in Canaan.

Or ce sont ici les nations que l'Eternel laissa pour éprouver par elles Israël, [savoir] tous ceux qui n'avaient point eu connaissance de toutes les guerres de Canaan;

2 (He did so to teach warfare to the later generations of Israel, particularly to those who had not previously experienced it.)

Afin qu'au moins les générations des enfants d'Israël sussent et apprissent ce que c'est que la guerre; au moins ceux qui auparavant n'en avaient rien connu.

3 They are: the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living in the mountains of Lebanon from Mount Baal-hermon to Lebo-hamath.

[Ces nations donc furent] les cinq Gouvernements des Philistins, et tous les Cananéens, les Sidoniens, et les Héviens, qui habitaient en la montagne du Liban, depuis la montagne de Bahal-hermon, jusqu'à l'entrée de Hamath.

4 They were left there be to a test for the Israelites, to find out whether the Israelites would keep the Lord's commandments which he had given their forefathers through Moses.

[Ces nations], dis-je, servirent à éprouver Israël, pour voir s'ils obéiraient aux commandements de l'Eternel, lesquels il avait donnés à leurs pères par le moyen de Moïse.

5 They lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

Ainsi les enfants d'Israël habitèrent parmi les Cananéens, les Héthiens, les Amorrhéens, les Phérésiens, les Héviens, et les Jébusiens.

6 The Israelites intermarried with them, marrying their daughters, giving their own daughters to their sons, and worshiped their gods.

Et ils prirent leurs filles pour femmes, et ils donnèrent leurs filles à leurs fils, et servirent leurs dieux.

7 The Israelites did what was evil in the Lord's sight. They ignored the Lord their God and worshiped the images of Baals and Asherahs.

Les enfants d'Israël firent donc ce qui déplaît à l'Eternel; ils oublièrent l'Eternel leur Dieu, et servirent les Bahalins, et les bocages.

8 The Lord became angry with Israel, so he sold them to Cushan-Rishathaim, king of Aram Naharaim. The Israelites were subject to Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.

C'est pourquoi la colère de l'Eternel s'enflamma contre Israël, et il les vendit en la main de Cusan-rischathajim, Roi de Mésopotamie. Et les enfants d'Israël furent asservis à Cusan-rischathajim huit ans.

9 But when the Israelites cried out to the Lord to help them, he provided someone to rescue them, Othniel, son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, and he saved them.

Puis les enfants d'Israël crièrent à l'Eternel, et l'Eternel leur suscita un Libérateur qui les délivra, [savoir] Hothniël, fils de Kénas, frère puîné de Caleb.

10 The Spirit of the Lord came on him, and he became Israel's judge. He went to war with Cushan-Rishathaim, king of Aram, and the Lord handed the king over to Othniel, who was victorious.

Et l'Esprit de l'Eternel fut sur lui, et il jugea Israël, et sortit en bataille, et l'Eternel livra entre ses mains Cusan-rischathajim, Roi d'Aram; et sa main fut fortifiée contre Cusan-rischathajim.

11 As a result, the country was a peace for forty years until Othniel, son of Kenaz, died.

Et le pays fut en repos quarante ans. Puis Hothniel, fils de Kénas, mourut.

12 But once again the Israelites did what was evil in the Lord's sight, and because they did this the Lord gave power to Eglon, king of Moab, to conquer Israel.

Et les enfants d'Israël se mirent encore à faire ce qui déplaît à l'Eternel; et l'Eternel fortifia Héglon, Roi de Moab, contre Israël, parce qu'ils avaient fait ce qui déplaît à l'Eternel.

13 Eglon had the Ammonites and the Amalekite join him, and then attacked and defeated Israel, taking possession of the City of Palms.

Et [Héglon] assembla auprès de lui les enfants d'Hammon et d'Hamalec, et il alla, et frappa Israël, et ils s'emparèrent de la ville des palmes.

14 The Israelites were subject to Eglon, king of Moab, for eighteen years.

Et les enfants d'Israël furent asservis à Héglon, Roi de Moab, dix-huit ans.

15 Again the Israelites cried out to the Lord to help them, and he provided someone to rescue them, Ehud, son of Gera the Benjamite, a left-handed man. The Israelites sent him to pay the tribute to Eglon, king of Moab.

Puis les enfants d'Israël crièrent à l'Eternel, et l'Eternel leur suscita un Libérateur, [savoir] Ehud, fils de Guéra Benjamite, duquel la main droite était serrée. Et les enfants d'Israël envoyèrent par lui un présent à Héglon, Roi de Moab.

16 Ehud had made for himself a cubit long double-edged sword, and he strapped it to his right thigh under his clothes.

Or Ehud s'était fait une épée à deux tranchants, de la longueur d'une coudée, qu'il avait ceinte sous ses vêtements sur sa cuisse droite.

17 He came and presented the tribute to Eglon, king of Moab, who was a very fat man.

Et il présenta le don à Héglon, Roi de Moab; et Héglon était un homme fort gras.

18 Then after delivering the tribute he sent home those who had helped carry it.

Or il arriva que quand il eut achevé de présenter le don, il reconduisit le peuple qui avait apporté le don.

19 But when he reached the stone idols near Gilgal, he turned back. He went to see Eglon, and told him, “Your Majesty, I have a secret message for you.” The king told his attendants, “Silence!” and they all left.

Mais [Ehud] s'en étant retourné depuis les carrières de pierre, qui [étaient] vers Guilgal, il dit: Ô Roi! j'ai à te dire quelque chose en secret. Et il lui répondit: Tais-toi, et tous ceux qui étaient auprès de lui, sortirent de là.

20 Ehud then went over to where Eglon was sitting alone in his cool upstairs room, and told him, “I have a message from God for you.” As the king got up from his seat,

Et Ehud s'approchant de lui, qui était assis seul dans sa chambre d'Eté, il lui dit: J'ai un mot à te dire de la part de Dieu. Alors [le Roi] se leva du trône.

21 Ehud grabbed his sword with his left hand from his right thigh and drove it into Eglon's belly.

Et Ehud avançant sa main gauche, prit l'épée de dessus sa cuisse droite, et la lui enfonça dans le ventre;

22 The handle went in with the blade and the fat closed over it. So Ehud didn't pull the sword out, and the king defecated.

Et la poignée entra après la lame, et la graisse serra tellement la lame, qu'il ne pouvait tirer l'épée du ventre; et il en sortit de la fiente.

23 Then Ehud closed and locked the doors, and escaped through the toilet.

Après cela Ehud sortit par le porche, fermant après soi les portes de la chambre, laquelle il ferma à la clef.

24 After he had left, the servants came and saw that the doors of the room were locked. “He must be using the toilet,” they concluded.

Ainsi il sortit; et les serviteurs d'Héglon vinrent, et regardèrent, et voilà, les portes de la chambre étaient fermées à la clef; et ils dirent: Sans doute il est à ses affaires dans sa chambre d'Eté.

25 So they waited until they couldn't stand it any more, and since he still hadn't opened the doors of the room, they went and found the key and opened the doors. There was their lord, lying dead on the floor.

Et ils attendirent tant qu'ils en furent honteux; et voyant qu'il n'ouvrait point les portes de la chambre, ils prirent la clef, et l'ouvrirent; et voici, leur Seigneur était étendu mort à terre.

26 While the servants delayed acting, Ehud escaped, passing the stone idols and on to Seirah.

Mais Ehud échappa tandis qu'ils s'amusaient, et passa les carrières de pierre, et se sauva à Séhira.

27 When he got there, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites joined him. They went down from the hills, with Ehud leading them.

Et quand il y fut entré, il sonna de la trompette en la montagne d'Ephraïm, et les enfants d'Israël descendirent avec lui en la montagne; et il marchait devant eux.

28 He told them, “Follow me, for the Lord has handed Moab, your enemy, over to you.” So they followed him down and took control of the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab. They didn't let anyone cross.

Et il leur dit: Suivez-moi, car l'Eternel a livré entre vos mains les Moabites vos ennemis. Ainsi ils descendirent après lui, et se saisissant des passages du Jourdain contre les Moabites, ils ne laissèrent passer personne.

29 Then they attacked the Moabites and killed around 10,000 of their best and strongest fighting men. Not a single one escaped.

Et en ce temps-là ils frappèrent des Moabites environ dix mille hommes, tous en bon état, et tous vaillants, et il n'en échappa aucun.

30 Moab was conquered that day and made subject to Israel, and the country was at peace for eighty years.

En ce jour-là donc Moab fut humilié sous la main d'Israël; et le pays fut en repos quatre-vingts ans.

31 After Ehud was Shamgar, son of Anath, who killed six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. He also rescued Israel.

Et après lui fut [en sa place] Samgar, fils d'Hanath, qui frappa six cents Philistins avec un aiguillon à bœufs, et qui délivra Israël.
