Judges 11
1 Jephthah of Gilead was a strong fighter. He was the son of a prostitute, and his father was Gilead.
Era então Jefthe, o gileadita, valente e valoroso, porém filho d'uma prostituta: mas Gilead gerara a Jefthe.
2 Gilead's wife gave him sons, who when they grew up, drove Jephthah away, telling him, “You won't inherit anything from our father because you are another woman's son.”
Tambem a mulher de Gilead lhe pariu filhos, e, sendo os filhos d'esta mulher já grandes, expelliram a Jefthe, e lhe disseram: Não herdarás em casa de nosso pae, porque és filho d'outra mulher.
3 Jephthah ran away from his brothers and went to live in the land of Tob. A gang of trouble-makers joined him and he led them out on raids.
Então Jefthe fugiu de diante de seus irmãos, e habitou na terra de Tob: e homens levianos se ajuntaram com Jefthe, e sahiam com elle.
4 Later on, the Ammonites were at war with Israel.
E aconteceu que, depois d'alguns dias, os filhos d'Ammon pelejaram contra Israel.
5 As the Ammonites were attacking Israel, the elders of Gilead came to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.
Aconteceu pois que, como os filhos d'Ammon pelejassem contra Israel, foram os anciãos de Gilead buscar a Jefthe da terra de Tob.
6 “Come and be our army commander,” they asked Jepthah, “so we can fight the Ammonites.”
E disseram a Jefthe: Vem, e sê-nos por Cabeça: para que combatamos contra os filhos d'Ammon.
7 “Weren't you the ones who hated me and drove me from my father's house?” Jephthah asked them, “Why are you coming to me now you're in trouble?”
Porém Jefthe disse aos anciãos de Gilead: Porventura não me aborrecestes a mim, e não me expellistes da casa de meu pae? porque pois agora viestes a mim, quando estaes em aperto?
8 “Yes, that's why we've turned to you now,” the elders of Gilead replied. “Come with us and fight the Ammonites, and you will be the leader of all the people of Gilead.”
E disseram os anciãos de Gilead a Jefthe: Por isso tornamos a ti, para que venhas comnosco, e combatas contra os filhos d'Ammon: e nos sejas por Cabeça sobre todos os moradores de Gilead.
9 “So if I go back with you and fight the Ammonites, and the Lord makes me victorious, then I'll be your leader?” Jephthah asked the elders of Gilead.
Então Jefthe disse aos anciãos de Gilead: Se me tornardes a levar para combater contra os filhos d'Ammon, e o Senhor m'os dér diante de mim, então eu vos serei por Cabeça?
10 “The Lord will be a witness between us,” they replied. “We'll do whatever you say.”
E disseram os anciãos de Gilead a Jefthe: O Senhor será testemunha entre nós, e assim o faremos conforme á tua palavra.
11 So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him their leader and army commander. And Jephthah repeated all his conditions before the Lord at Mizpah.
Assim Jefthe foi-se com os anciãos de Gilead, e o povo o poz por Cabeça e principe sobre si: e Jefthe fallou todas as suas palavras perante o Senhor em Mispah.
12 Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites to ask him, “What have you got against me that you want to attack my land?”
E enviou Jefthe mensageiros ao rei dos filhos d'Ammon, dizendo: Que ha entre mim e ti, que vieste a mim a pelejar contra a minha terra?
13 The king of the Ammonites replied to Jephthah's messengers, “Israel seized my land when they came from Egypt. It extended from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River, and across to the Jordan River. So give it back and there'll be no fighting.”
E disse o rei dos filhos de Ammon aos mensageiros de Jefthe: Porquanto, saindo Israel do Egypto, tomou a minha terra, desde Arnon até Jabbok, e ainda até ao Jordão: torna-m'a pois agora em paz.
14 Jephthah sent messengers back to the king of the Ammonites
Porém Jefthe proseguiu ainda em enviar mensageiros ao rei dos filhos d'Ammon,
15 to tell him, “This is Jephthah's reply: The Israelites did not take any land from Moab or from the Ammonites.
Dizendo-lhe: Assim diz Jefthe: Israel não tomou, nem a terra dos moabitas nem a terra dos filhos d'Ammon;
16 When they left Egypt, the Israelites went through the desert to the Red Sea and arrived at Kadesh.
Porque, subindo Israel do Egypto, andou pelo deserto até ao Mar Vermelho, e chegou até Cades.
17 They sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass through your country,’ but the king of Edom refused to listen. They also sent the same request to the king of Moab, and he refused too. So they remained at Kadesh.
E Israel enviou mensageiros ao rei dos edomitas, dizendo: Rogo-te que me deixes passar pela tua terra. Porém o rei dos edomitas não lhe deu ouvidos; enviou tambem ao rei dos moabitas, o qual tambem não quiz: e assim Israel ficou em Cades.
18 Eventually the Israelites traveled through the desert, avoiding the lands of Edom and Moab. They arrived on the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the Arnon River. But they did not enter Moab territory, for the Arnon River was its border.
Depois andou pelo deserto, e rodeou a terra dos edomitas e a terra dos moabitas, e veiu do nascente do sol á terra dos moabitas, e alojaram-se d'além d'Arnon; porém não entraram nos limites dos moabitas, porque Arnon é limite dos moabitas.
19 Then the Israelites sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who ruled from Heshbon, and asked him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to our own country.’
Mas Israel enviou mensageiros a Sehon, rei dos amorrheos, rei de Hesbon: e disse-lhe Israel: Deixa-nos, peço-te, passar pela tua terra até ao meu logar.
20 But Sihon didn't trust the Israelites to pass through his territory. So he assembled his army, set up camp at Jahaz, and attacked the Israelites.
Porém Sehon não se fiou d'Israel para este passar nos seus limites; antes Sehon ajuntou todo o seu povo, e se acamparam em Jasa, e combateu contra Israel.
21 However, the Lord, the God of Israel, handed over Sihon and all his people to the Israelites, who defeated them. So the Israelites took over all the land inhabited by the Amorites.
E o Senhor Deus d'Israel deu a Sehon com todo o seu povo na mão d'Israel, e os feriram: e Israel tomou por herança toda a terra dos amorrheos que habitavam n'aquella terra.
22 They occupied all the territory of the Amorites from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River, and from the desert to the Jordan River.
E por herança tomaram todos os limites dos anciãos, desde Arnon até Jabbok, e desde o deserto até ao Jordão.
23 It was the Lord, the God of Israel, who drove out the Amorites before his people Israel, so why should you take it over?
Assim o Senhor Deus d'Israel desapossou os amorrheos de diante do seu povo d'Israel: e os possuirias tu?
24 Why don't you keep whatever your god Chemosh gave you, and we'll keep whatever the Lord our God has given us?
Não possuirias tu aquelle que Camos, teu deus, desapossasse de diante de ti? assim possuiremos nós todos quantos o Senhor nosso Deus desapossar de diante de nós.
25 Do you think you're so much better than Balak, son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel or attack them?
Agora pois és tu ainda melhor do que Balac, filho de Zippor, rei dos moabitas? porventura contendeu elle em algum tempo com Israel, ou pelejou alguma vez contra elles?
26 Israelites have been living in Heshbon, Aroer, their villages, and in all the towns along the banks of the Arnon River for three hundred years. Why didn't you take them back during that time?
Emquanto Israel habitou trezentos annos em Hesbon e nas suas villas, e em Aroer e nas suas villas, em todas as cidades que estão ao longo d'Arnon, porque o não recuperastes n'aquelle tempo?
27 I have not sinned against you, but you have done me wrong by going to war against me. Let the Lord, the Judge, decide today between the Israelites and the Ammonites.”
Tão pouco pequei eu contra ti! porém tu usas mal comigo em pelejar contra mim: o Senhor, que é juiz, julgue hoje entre os filhos d'Israel e entre os filhos de Ammon.
28 But the king of Ammon didn't pay any attention to what Jephthah had to say.
Porém o rei dos filhos d'Ammon não deu ouvidos ás palavras de Jefthe, que lhe enviou.
29 Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He passed through Gilead and Manasseh, then on through Mizpah of Gilead. From there he advanced to attack the Ammonites.
Então o espirito do Senhor veiu sobre Jefthe, e atravessou elle por Gilead e Manasseh: porque passou até Mispah de Gilead, e de Mispah de Gilead passou até aos filhos d'Ammon.
30 Jephthah made a solemn promise to the Lord, saying, “If you make me victorious over the Ammonites,
E Jefthe votou um voto ao Senhor, e disse: Se totalmente deres os filhos d'Ammon na minha mão,
31 I will dedicate to the Lord whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me on my safe return from the battle. I will present it as a burnt offering.”
Aquillo que, saindo da porta de minha casa, me sair ao encontro, voltando eu dos filhos d'Ammon em paz, isso será do Senhor, e o offerecerei em holocausto.
32 Jephthah advanced to attack the Ammonites, and the Lord gave him the victory over them.
Assim Jefthe passou aos filhos d'Ammon, a combater contra elles: e o Senhor os deu na sua mão.
33 He soundly defeated them, capturing twenty cities from Aroer to the area around Minnith, up as far as Abel-keramim. This is how the Ammonites were conquered by the Israelites.
E os feriu com grande mortandade, desde Aroer até chegar a Minnith, vinte cidades, e até Abel-keramim; assim foram subjugados os filhos d'Ammon diante dos filhos d'Israel.
34 When Jephthah arrived home in Mizpah, there came his daughter out to meet him, with tambourines and dancing! She was his only child—he had no son or daughter apart from her.
Vindo pois Jefthe a Mispah, á sua casa, eis que a sua filha lhe saiu ao encontro com adufes e com danças: e era ella só a unica; não tinha outro filho nem filha.
35 The moment he saw her, he ripped his clothes in agony and cried out, “Oh no, my daughter! You have crushed me completely! You have destroyed me, for I made a solemn promise to the Lord and I can't go back on it.”
E aconteceu que, quando a viu, rasgou os seus vestidos, e disse: Ah! filha minha, muito me abateste, e és d'entre os que me turbam! porque eu abri a minha bocca ao Senhor, e não tornarei atraz.
36 She replied, “Father, you have made a solemn promise to the Lord. Do to me what you promised, for the Lord brought vengeance your enemies, the Ammonites.”
E ella lhe disse: Pae meu, abriste tu a tua bocca ao Senhor, faze de mim como saiu da tua bocca: pois o Senhor te vingou dos teus inimigos, os filhos d'Ammon.
37 Then she went on to say to him, “Just let me do this: let me walk through the hills for two months with my friends and grieve the fact that I'll never marry.”
Disse mais a seu pae: Faça-se-me isto: deixa-me por dois mezes que vá, e desça pelos montes, e chore a minha virgindade, eu e as minhas companheiras.
38 “You can go,” he told her. He sent her away for two months, and she and her friends went into the hills and cried because she would never marry.
E disse elle: Vae. E deixou-a ir por dois mezes: então foi-se ella com as suas companheiras, e chorou a sua virgindade pelos montes.
39 When the two months were over, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had promised, and she was a virgin. This is the origin of the custom in Israel
E succedeu que, ao fim de dois mezes, tornou ella para seu pae, o qual cumpriu n'ella o seu voto que tinha votado: e ella não conheceu varão; e d'aqui veiu o costume d'Israel,
40 that every year the young women of Israel leave for four days to weep in commemoration of the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
Que as filhas d'Israel iam de anno em anno a lamentar a filha de Jefthe, o gileadita, por quatro dias no anno.
