Jonah 1
1 The Lord spoke to Jonah the son of Amittai, telling him,
Das Wort des Herrn erging an Jonas, den Sohn des Amittaj:
2 “Go immediately to the great city of Nineveh and condemn it because I have seen the wickedness of its people.”
"Auf! Zieh nach Ninive, der großen Stadt, und predige, daß ihre Bosheit bis vor mich gedrungen."
3 But Jonah left and ran away to Tarshish to get away from the Lord. He went to Joppa where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He paid the fare and went on board to sail to Tarshish in order to get away from the Lord.
Doch Jonas machte sich daran, zu fliehen vor dem Herrn nach Tarsis. Er stieg deshalb hinab nach Joppe und traf ein Schiff, das fuhr nach Tarsis. Als er den Preis dafür entrichtet, stieg er ein, um vor dem Herrn mit ihnen nach Tarsis zu gelangen.
4 But the Lord sent a terrible wind across the sea, creating a violent storm that threatened to break up the ship.
Der Herr jedoch warf einen starken Wind aufs Meer, ein großer Sturm ward auf dem Meer, so daß das Schiff zu scheitern drohte.
5 The sailors were terrified and each of them prayed to their own god to save them. They threw the cargo overboard to make the ship lighter. Meanwhile, Jonah had gone down into the hold where he had laid down and fallen fast asleep.
Die Schiffer wurden voller Angst; ein jeder schrie zu seinem Gott. Sie warfen das Gepäck ins Meer aus ihrem Schiff, es dadurch zu erleichtern. Doch Jonas war ins Unterteil des Schiffs hinabgestiegen und hatte dort sich hingelegt und war fest eingeschlafen.
6 The ship's captain went to Jonah and asked him, “How can you be sleeping? Get up and pray to your God. Maybe he will take notice of what's happening to us and we won't drown.”
Da trat der Schiffshauptmann zu ihm und sprach zu ihm: "Was fällt dir ein, zu schlafen? Erheb dich! Fleh zu deinem Gott! Vielleicht nimmt dieser Gott sich unser an, daß wir nicht untergehn."
7 Then the sailors said to each other, “Let's draw lots so we can find out who's to blame for this disaster that's fallen on us.” They drew lots and Jonah's name was came up.
Sie sprachen alsdann zueinander: "Auf! Laßt uns auch die Lose werfen, damit wir es erfahren, durch wessen Schuld uns dieses Unheil trifft!" Da warfen sie die Lose. Das Los traf Jonas.
8 So they asked him, “Tell us who is responsible for this trouble that we're in. What do you do for a living? Where are you from? What is your country? What is your nationality?”
Da sprachen sie zu ihm: "Sag uns, weshalb uns dieses Unheil trifft! Was hast du für Geschäfte? Wo kommst du her? Was ist dein Vaterland? Von welchem Volke stammst du denn?"
9 “I am a Hebrew,” Jonah replied, “and I worship the Lord, the God of the heavens, the sea, and the land.”
Er sprach zu ihnen: "Ich bin Hebräer und verehre Gott, den Herrn des Himmels, der das Meer geschaffen und das feste Land."
10 The sailors became even more terrified and said to Jonah, “What have you done?” because Jonah had explained to them that he was running away from the Lord.
Da überfiel die Leute große Angst; sie fragten ihn: "Was hast du denn getan?" Die Leute wußten nämlich schon, daß er in Furcht war vor dem Herrn, wie er es ihnen angedeutet.
11 “What shall we do to you to calm the storm?” they asked him, since the storm was getting worse.
Da sprachen sie zu ihm: "Was sollen wir jetzt mit dir tun, damit von uns das Meer ablasse?" Denn immer ärger tobte jetzt die See.
12 “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” Jonah replied. “Then the sea will become calm, because I know it's because of me that you're in this terrible storm.”
Er sprach zu ihnen: "Nehmt und werft mich in das Meer! Dann läßt das Meer von euch. Ich weiß ja, daß nur meinetwegen dieser große Sturm euch überfiel."
13 Instead the sailors tried to row to get back to the shore, but they couldn't because the sea had become so wild from the worsening storm.
Da mühten sich die Leute ab, ans feste Land zurückzukommen. Doch sie vermochten's nicht; denn immer stärker tobte gegen sie die See.
14 Then they called out to the Lord, “Lord! Please don't kill us for sacrificing this man's life or for spilling innocent blood, for you, Lord, made it happen.”
Da riefen sie zum Herrn und sprachen: "Herr, laß uns nicht zugrunde gehen um des Lebens dieses Mannes willen! Bring über uns nicht schuldlos Blut! Herr, tu, was Dir gefällt!"
15 So they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea, and it became calm.
Da nahmen sie den Jonas und warfen ihn ins Meer. Nun legte sich des Meeres Ungestüm.
16 The sailors were overcome with fear. They offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made many promises to him.
So fürchteten sich diese Leute mächtig vor dem Herrn und brachten ihm Schlachtopfer dar und machten ihm Gelübde.
17 The Lord sent a huge fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah spent three days and nights in the belly of the fish.
Der Herr ersah sich einen großen Fisch, den Jonas zu verschlingen. Und Jonas blieb drei Tage und drei Nächte im Leib des Fisches.
