< Jonah 2 >
1 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish.
Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh his God from the fish's stomach.
2 He began, “In my agony I cried out to the Lord and he answered me; from the depths of Sheol I pleaded for help and you answered me. (Sheol )
He said, “I called out to Yahweh about my distress and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help! You heard my voice. (Sheol )
3 You threw me into the deep, all the way down to the bottom of the sea. Water flooded all around me; your crashing waves rolled over me.
You had thrown me into the depths, into the heart of the seas, and the currents surrounded me; all your waves and billows passed over me.
4 I said to myself, ‘The Lord has banished me from his sight. Will I ever see your holy Temple again?’
I said, 'I am driven out from before your eyes; yet I will again look toward your holy temple.'
5 The water swirled over me so I couldn't breathe; the deep sucked me down; seaweed wrapped itself around my head.
The waters closed around me up to my neck; the deep was all around me; seaweed wrapped around my head.
6 I sank down to the base of the mountains; the earth barred me in forever. But you, my Lord, my God, brought me back up from the abyss.
I went down to the bases of the mountains; the earth with its bars closed upon me forever. Yet you brought up my life from the pit, Yahweh, my God!
7 As my life ebbed away, I remembered the Lord; my prayer came to you in your holy Temple.
When my soul fainted within me, I called Yahweh to mind; then my prayer came to you, to your holy temple.
8 Those who worship worthless idols give up their trust in God's goodness.
They give attention to useless gods while they forsake loving faithfulness.
9 But I will offer you sacrifices, shouting out my thanks. I will keep my promises to you, for salvation comes from the Lord.”
But as for me, I will sacrifice to you with a voice of thanksgiving; I will fulfill that which I have vowed. Salvation comes from Yahweh!”
10 Then the Lord told the fish to spit out Jonah onto the shore.
Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited up Jonah upon the dry land.
