< Jonah 2 >
1 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish.
Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly,
2 He began, “In my agony I cried out to the Lord and he answered me; from the depths of Sheol I pleaded for help and you answered me. (Sheol )
And said, I cried by reason of my affliction to the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and you heard my voice. (Sheol )
3 You threw me into the deep, all the way down to the bottom of the sea. Water flooded all around me; your crashing waves rolled over me.
For you had cast me into the deep, in the middle of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all your billows and your waves passed over me.
4 I said to myself, ‘The Lord has banished me from his sight. Will I ever see your holy Temple again?’
Then I said, I am cast out of your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.
5 The water swirled over me so I couldn't breathe; the deep sucked me down; seaweed wrapped itself around my head.
The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
6 I sank down to the base of the mountains; the earth barred me in forever. But you, my Lord, my God, brought me back up from the abyss.
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet have you brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.
7 As my life ebbed away, I remembered the Lord; my prayer came to you in your holy Temple.
When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.
8 Those who worship worthless idols give up their trust in God's goodness.
They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
9 But I will offer you sacrifices, shouting out my thanks. I will keep my promises to you, for salvation comes from the Lord.”
But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.
10 Then the Lord told the fish to spit out Jonah onto the shore.
And the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah on the dry land.
