< John 19 >
1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.
So then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged.
2 Soldiers made a crown of thorns and placed it on his head, and put a purple robe on him.
And the soldiers twisted a crown out of [poisonous] thorns and put it on His head; they also threw a purple robe around Him
3 Time and again they went up to him and said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and slapped him.
and started saying, “Hail, O King of the Jews!” And they slapped Him repeatedly.
4 Pilate went outside once more and said to them, “I'm bringing him out here to you so you'll know I find him not guilty of any crime.”
Pilate then went out again and says to them, “Look, I am bringing him out to you so that you may know that I find no crime in him at all.”
5 Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. “Look, here's the man,” said Pilate.
Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe; and Pilate says to them, “Look at the man!”
6 When the chief priests and the guards saw Jesus, they shouted out, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” “You take him and crucify him,” Pilate answered. “I find him not guilty.”
Well when the chief priests and the operatives saw Him they shouted, saying, “Crucify! Crucify him!” Pilate says to them, “You take and crucify him, because I find no crime in him.”
7 The Jewish leaders replied, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die because he claimed to be the Son of God.”
The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to our law he ought to die, because he made himself ‘Son of God’!”
8 When Pilate heard this he was more afraid than ever,
Hey, when Pilate heard this statement he was more afraid than ever!
9 and he went back into the governor's palace. He asked Jesus, “Where do you come from?” But Jesus didn't respond.
So back into the Praetorium he went and says to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus did not answer him.
10 “Are you refusing to talk to me?” Pilate said to him. “Don't you realize that I have the power to have you released or to crucify you?”
So Pilate says to Him: “Are you not speaking to me? Don't you know that I have authority to crucify you and authority to release you?”
11 “You would have no power over me unless it had been given to you from above,” Jesus answered. “Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of the greater sin.”
Jesus answered: “You would have no authority over me at all if it had not been given to you from Above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”
12 When Pilate heard this he tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders shouted, “If you set this man free you're not Caesar's friend. Anyone who sets himself up as a king is rebelling against Caesar.”
From that moment Pilate really tried to release Him; but the Jews kept shouting, saying: “If you release this fellow you are no friend of Caesar's! Whoever makes himself a king is opposing Caesar!”
13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called Stone Pavement (Gabbatha in Hebrew).
Well, upon hearing this statement Pilate led Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat, in a place called ‘Stone Pavement’, while in Hebrew ‘Gabatha’
14 It was around noon on the preparation day before the Passover. “Look, here is your king,” he said to the Jews.
(now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; the hour was about six a.m.), and he says to the Jews, “Look at your king!”
15 “Kill him! Kill him! Crucify him!” they screamed out. “Do you want me to crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “The only king we have is Caesar,” the chief priests replied.
But they shouted, “Out! Out! Crucify him!” Pilate says to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”
16 So he handed Jesus over to them to be crucified.
So then he handed Him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and lead Him away.
17 They led Jesus away, who carried his own cross, and went out to the “Place of the Skull,” (Golgotha in Hebrew).
And carrying His cross He went out to the place called ‘Skull’, which in Hebrew is called ‘Golgotha’;
18 They crucified him there, and two others with him: one on either side, with Jesus between them.
there they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.
19 Pilate had a notice made and placed on the cross which said, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”
Now Pilate had also written a notice, and put it on the cross; and the inscription was: JESUS THE NATSOREAN THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 Many people read the notice because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
So many of the Jews read this notice, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; further, it was written in Hebrew, Greek and Latin!
21 Then the chief priests came to Pilate and asked him, “Don't write ‘the King of the Jews,’ but ‘This man said I am the King of the Jews.’”
So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Don't write, ‘The king of the Jews’, but that the fellow said, ‘I am the king of the Jews.’”
22 Pilate replied, “What I have written I have written.”
Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written!”
23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his clothes and divided them in four so that each soldier had his share. There was also his robe, made without seams, woven in one piece.
Now when the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took His clothes and made four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took His tunic, but the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top.
24 So they said to each other, “Let's not tear it, but let's decide who will have it by rolling dice.” This fulfilled the Scripture that says, “They divided my garments among them and rolled dice for my clothing.”
So they said among themselves, “Let's not rip it, but toss for it, to see whose it will be,” so that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: “They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast a lot.” That is why the soldiers did these things.
25 So that is what the soldiers did. Standing near the cross was Jesus' mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene.
Now Jesus' mother and her sister, Mary of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene were standing by His cross.
26 When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Mother, this is your son.”
So Jesus, seeing His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He says to His mother, “Woman, there is your son!”
27 Then he said to the disciple, “This is your mother.” From then on the disciple took her into his home.
Then He says to the disciple, “There is your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
28 Jesus now realized that he had finished all that he had come to do. In fulfillment of Scripture, he said, “I'm thirsty.”
After this, knowing that everything was now accomplished so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus says, “I'm thirsty!”
29 A jar of wine vinegar was standing there, so they soaked a sponge in the vinegar, put it on a hyssop stick, and held it to his lips.
Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; so they filled a sponge with sour wine, placed it on a hyssop, and put it to His mouth.
30 After he'd had the vinegar, Jesus said, “It's finished!” Then he bowed his head and breathed his last.
Then, when He had received the sour wine, Jesus said, “Paid in full!” And bowing His head He dismissed His spirit.
31 It was preparation day, and the Jewish leaders didn't want to leave the bodies on the crosses during the Sabbath day (in fact this was a special Sabbath), so they asked Pilate to break the legs, so that the bodies could be removed.
Now then, because it was Preparation Day, so that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews requested Pilate that their legs might be broken and they be removed.
32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first one and then the other of those crucified with Jesus,
Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with Him.
33 but when they came to Jesus they saw he was already dead, so they didn't break his legs.
But upon coming to Jesus, they did not break His legs, since they saw that He had already died.
34 However, one of the soldiers stuck a spear into his side, and blood mixed with water came out.
But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
35 The one who saw this has given this evidence, and his evidence is true. He's certain that what he says is true so you can believe it too.
And the one who saw has testified, and his testimony is true (yes, he knows he is telling the truth), so that you may believe.
36 It happened like this so Scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”
Because these things happened so that the Scripture should be fulfilled: “Not a bone of His will be broken.”
37 and as another Scripture says, “They will look at the one they pierced.”
And again another Scripture says: “They will look on Him whom they pierced.”
38 After this Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate if he could take down the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave his permission. Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but in secret because he feared the Jews. So Joseph came and took the body away.
After these things Joseph, the one from Arimathea (being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews), requested Pilate that he might remove the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave permission. So he came and removed Jesus' body.
39 He was joined by Nicodemus, the man who had first visited Jesus at night. He brought with him a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about seventy-five pounds.
Now Nicodemus also came (the one who at first came to Jesus by night), bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.
40 They took Jesus' body and wrapped it in linen cloth together with the mixture of spices, in accordance with Jewish burial customs. There was a garden near where Jesus was crucified;
Then they took Jesus' body and wrapped it in linen strips, with the aromatic spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews.
41 and in the garden was a new, unused tomb.
Now at the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been buried.
42 Since it was the Jewish day of preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus to rest there.
So that is where they put Jesus, because of the Jews' Preparation Day, since the tomb was nearby.
