John 11
1 A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters Mary and Martha.
Es war aber einer krank, Lazarus von Bethania, aus dem Flecken der Maria und ihrer Schwester Martha.
2 Mary was the one who had anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair. It was her brother Lazarus who was sick.
(Es war aber die Maria, die den Herrn mit Salbe gesalbt und seine Füße mit ihren Haaren getrocknet hat, deren Bruder Lazarus krank war.)
3 So the sisters sent a message to Jesus: “Lord, your close friend is sick.”
Da sandten die Schwestern zu ihm und ließen ihm sagen: Herr, siehe, der den du lieb hast, ist krank.
4 When Jesus heard the news he said, “The end result of this sickness will not be death. Through this God's glory will be revealed so that the Son of God may be glorified.”
Da es aber Jesus hörte, sagte er: diese Krankheit ist nicht zum Tod, sondern für die Herrlichkeit Gottes, damit der Sohn Gottes dadurch verherrlicht werde.
5 Even though Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus,
Es liebte aber Jesus die Martha und ihre Schwester und den Lazarus.
6 and had heard that Lazarus was sick, he remained where he was for two more days.
Wie er nun hörte, daß derselbe krank sei, blieb er zunächst noch zwei Tage an seinem Aufenthaltsort.
7 Then he told the disciples, “Let's return to Judea.”
Dann erst sagt er zu den Jüngern: lasset uns wieder nach Judäa ziehen.
8 The disciples replied, “Rabbi, just a few days ago the Jews were trying to stone you. Do you really want to go back there now?”
Sagen die Jünger zu ihm: Rabbi, eben suchten die Juden dich zu steinigen, und du gehst wieder dahin?
9 “Aren't there twelve hours in a day?” Jesus replied.
Antwortete Jesus: hat der Tag nicht zwölf Stunden? Wenn einer am Tage wandelt, stößt er nicht an, weil er das Licht dieser Welt sieht.
10 “If you walk during the day you don't stumble because you can see where you're going by the light of this world. But if you walk during the night you stumble because you have no light.”
Wenn aber einer bei Nacht wandelt, der stößt an, weil kein Licht darin ist.
11 After telling them this, he said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I'm going to go there and wake him up!”
So sprach er, und nach diesem sagt er zu ihnen: Lazarus unser Freund ist eingeschlafen; aber ich gehe, um ihn aufzuwecken.
12 The disciples said, “Lord, if he's sleeping then he'll get better.”
Da sagten die Jünger zu ihm: Herr, wenn er eingeschlafen ist, wird er davon kommen.
13 Jesus had been referring to the death of Lazarus, but the disciples thought he meant actual sleep.
Jesus aber hatte von seinem Tode gesprochen; sie dagegen meinten, er spreche von der Ruhe des Schlafes.
14 So Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.
Hierauf sagte es ihnen Jesus denn frei heraus: Lazarus ist gestorben,
15 For your sake I'm glad I wasn't there, because now you will be able to trust in me. Let's go and see him.”
und ich freue mich darüber, daß ich nicht dabei war, um euretwillen, damit ihr glaubet; aber lasset uns zu ihm gehen.
16 Thomas, the Twin, said to his fellow-disciples, “Let's go too so we can die with him.”
Da sagte Thomas, der Zwilling genannt, zu den Mitjüngern: ja, wir wollen auch gehen, auf daß wir mit ihm sterben.
17 When he arrived, Jesus learned that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days.
Da nun Jesus kam, traf er ihn schon vier Tage im Grabe.
18 Bethany was just two miles from Jerusalem,
Bethania aber war nahe bei Jerusalem, etwa fünfzehn Stadien weit.
19 and many Jews had come to console Mary and Martha at the loss of their brother.
Viele aber von den Juden hatten sich im Hause bei Martha und Maria eingefunden, um sie zu trösten wegen des Bruders.
20 When Martha found out that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.
Die Martha nun, wie sie hörte, daß Jesus komme, gieng ihm entgegen; Maria aber saß zu Hause.
21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you'd been here, my brother wouldn't have died.
Da sagte die Martha zu Jesus: Herr, wenn du da gewesen wärest, so wäre mein Bruder nicht gestorben.
22 But I'm certain that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”
Doch auch so weiß ich, daß, was du von Gott erbittest, das wird dir Gott verleihen.
23 Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”
Sagt zu ihr Jesus: Dein Bruder wird auferstehen.
24 “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day,” Martha answered.
Sagt zu ihm Martha: das weiß ich, daß er auferstehen wird in der Auferstehung am jüngsten Tage.
25 Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who trust in me will live, even though they die.
Sagt zu ihr Jesus: ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben; wer an mich glaubt, wird leben, auch wenn er stirbt.
Und wer da lebt und glaubt an mich, wird nimmermehr sterben in Ewigkeit. Glaubst du das? (aiōn g165)
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one expected to come to this world.”
Sie sagt zu ihm: ja, Herr, ich habe den Glauben, daß du bist der Christus, der Sohn Gottes, der in die Welt kommen soll.
28 When she had said this, she went and told her sister Mary in private, “The Teacher's here, and asking to see you.”
Und als sie dies gesagt, gieng sie fort und rief ihre Schwester Maria, und sagte ihr heimlich: der Meister ist da und ruft dich.
29 As soon as she heard, Mary quickly got up and went to see him.
Als diese es gehört, erhob sie sich eilig und gieng zu ihm.
30 Jesus hadn't arrived in the village yet. He was still at the place where Martha had met him.
Jesus war aber noch nicht in den Flecken gelangt, sondern er befand sich noch an der Stelle, wo ihm Martha entgegengekommen war.
31 The Jews who had been comforting Mary in the home saw how she'd got up quickly and left. So they followed her, thinking she was going to the tomb to weep there.
Die Juden nun, die bei ihr im Hause waren und sie trösteten, als sie sahen, daß Maria so schnell aufstand und fortgieng, folgten sie ihr, in der Meinung, sie gehe zum Grab, um da zu weinen.
32 When Mary arrived at the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you'd been here, my brother wouldn't have died.”
Maria nun, wie sie dahin kam, wo Jesus war, sobald sie ihn erblickte, fiel sie ihm zu Füßen, und sagte zu ihm: Herr, wenn du da gewesen wärest, so wäre mein Bruder nicht gestorben.
33 When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying as well, he was very troubled and upset.
Da nun Jesus sie weinen sah und ebenso die mit ihr gekommenen Juden, ward er tief bewegt im Geist und erschüttert.
34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked. They replied, “Lord, come and see.”
Und er sagte: wo habt ihr ihn hingelegt? Sagen sie zu ihm: Herr, komm und siehe.
35 Then Jesus cried too.
Jesus weinte.
36 “See how much he loved him,” the Jews said.
Da sagten die Juden: siehe, wie er ihn so lieb gehabt hat.
37 But some of them said, “If he could open the eyes of a blind man, couldn't he have kept Lazarus from dying?”
Etliche aber von ihnen sagten: konnte dieser, der dem Blinden die Augen geöffnet hat, nicht auch machen, daß der da nicht starb?
38 Very troubled, Jesus went to the tomb. It was a cave with a large stone placed at the entrance.
Abermals tief erregt geht Jesus zum Grabe. Es war aber eine Höhle, und darauf lag ein Stein.
39 “Remove the stone,” Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man's sister, said, “Lord, by now there will be a terrible smell, for he's been dead for four days.”
Sagt Jesus: schaffet den Stein weg. Sagt zu ihm die Schwester des Verstorbenen, Martha: Herr, er riecht schon, es ist ja schon vier Tage.
40 “Didn't I tell you that if you trusted me you would see God's glory?” Jesus replied.
Sagt Jesus zu ihr: habe ich dir nicht gesagt, daß du, wenn du glaubest, die Herrlichkeit Gottes sehen sollst?
41 So they removed the stone. Jesus looked heavenwards, and said, “Father, thank you for listening to me.
Da nahmen sie den Stein weg. Jesus aber erhob seine Augen nach oben und sagte: Vater, ich danke dir, daß du mich erhört hast.
42 I know you always listen to me. I said this because of the crowd standing here so that they will believe that you sent me.”
Ich wußte wohl, daß du mich allezeit erhörst; aber es ist mir um das Volk, das da herumsteht: damit sie glauben, daß du mich gesandt hast.
43 After saying this, Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!”
Und als er dieses gesagt, rief er laut: Lazarus, komme heraus.
44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of linen, and with a cloth around his face. “Unbind him and set him free,” Jesus told them.
Der Verstorbene kam heraus, die Füße und die Hände mit Binden zusammengebunden, und sein Angesicht war mit einem Schweißtuch verhüllt. Sagt Jesus zu ihnen: bindet ihn los und lasset ihn hingehen.
45 Consequently many of the Jews who had come to comfort Mary and who saw what Jesus did put their trust in him.
Viele nun von den Juden, die zu Maria gekommen waren und zusahen was er gethan, wurden gläubig an ihn,
46 But others went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
etliche von ihnen giengen hin zu den Pharisäern, und erzählten ihnen, was Jesus gethan.
47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the ruling council. “What shall we do?” they asked. “This man is doing many miracles.
Da riefen die Hohenpriester und Pharisäer ein Synedrium zusammen, und sprachen: was machen wir, da dieser Mensch so viele Zeichen thut?
48 If we allow him to continue, everybody will believe in him, and then the Romans will destroy both the Temple and our status as a nation.”
Wenn wir ihn so gehen lassen, so werden noch alle an ihn glauben, und werden die Römer kommen, und uns Land und Leute nehmen.
49 “You don't understand anything!” said Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
Einer aber von ihnen, Kaiphas, der dieses Jahres Hoherpriester war, sagte zu ihnen: Mit eurem Wissen ist es nichts;
50 “Can't you see that it's better for you that one man die for the people so that the whole nation won't be destroyed?”
so kommt ihr auch nicht zu dem Schluß, daß es für euch besser ist, daß ein Mensch sterbe für das Volk, als daß das ganze Volk zu Grunde gehe.
51 He didn't say this on his own behalf, but as chief priest that year he was prophesying that Jesus would die for the nation.
(Dieses sagte er aber nicht von sich selbst, sondern weil er Hoherpriester war dieses Jahres, weissagte er, daß Jesus sterben sollte für das Volk,
52 And this was not just for the Jewish nation, but for all the scattered children of God so that they might be gathered together and be made into one.
und nicht allein für das Volk, sondern damit er auch die zerstreuten Kinder Gottes zur Einheit versammle.)
53 From that time on they plotted how they might kill Jesus.
Von jenem Tage an nun beschlossen sie, ihn zu töten.
54 So Jesus did not travel openly among the Jews but went to a town called Ephraim in the region near the desert and stayed there with his disciples.
Da wandelte Jesus nicht mehr öffentlich unter den Juden, sondern er zog sich zurück von da in eine Gegend nahe bei der Wüste, nach einer Stadt Namens Ephraim, und dort hielt er sich mit den Jüngern auf.
55 It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover, and many people went from the countryside to Jerusalem to purify themselves for the Passover.
Es war aber nahe am Passa der Juden, und Viele zogen hinauf nach Jerusalem aus der Gegend, vor dem Passa, um sich zu reinigen.
56 People were looking for Jesus and talking about him as they stood in the Temple. “What do you think?” they asked each other. “Isn't he coming to the festival?”
Da suchten sie Jesus und standen und sprachen im Tempel zusammen: was meint ihr? er wird wohl nicht auf das Fest kommen?
57 The chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where Jesus was should report it so they could arrest him.
Es hatten aber die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer Anordnung getroffen, daß, wer seinen Aufenthalt wisse, es anzeigen solle, damit sie ihn greifen könnten.
