< Jeremiah 38 >

1 Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchijah heard what Jeremiah was telling everyone:
Shefaaxiyaa ilmi Mataan, Gedaaliyaas ilmi Phaashihuur, Yuukaal ilmi Shelemiyaatii fi Phaashihuur ilmi Malkiyaa waan Ermiyaas akkana jedhee saba hundatti hime dhagaʼan;
2 This is what the Lord says: Anyone who remains in this city will die from war and famine and disease, but anyone who goes over to the Babylonians will live. Their reward will be to save their lives.
“Waaqayyo akkana jedha: ‘Namni magaalaa kana keessatti hafu kam iyyuu goraadeen, beelaan yookaan dhaʼichaan ni duʼa; namni gara Baabilonotaatti baqatu kam iyyuu garuu ni jiraata. Inni lubbuu isaatiin ni baʼa; ni jiraatas.’
3 This is what the Lord says: Be sure of this—Jerusalem will be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon. He is going to capture it.
Waaqayyo akkana jedha: ‘Magaalaan kun dhugumaan dabarfamtee harka waraana mootii Baabilonitti ni kennamti; innis ishee qabata.’”
4 The officers told the king, “This man deserves to die because he's demoralizing the defenders left in the city, and all the people too, by telling them this. This man isn't trying to help these people, he's only going to destroy them.”
Kana irratti qondaaltonni sun mootichaan akkana jedhan; “Namichi kun ajjeefamuu qaba. Inni waan isaanitti dubbatuun loltoota magaalaa kana keessatti hafanii fi namoota hunda onnee dhabsiisa. Namichi kun saba kanaaf badiisa malee waan gaarii hin hawwu.”
5 “Well, you can do whatever you want to him,” King Zedekiah replied. “I can't stop you.”
Zedeqiyaa Mootichi immoo, “Inni harkuma keessan keessa jira; mootiin isiniin mormee homaa gochuu hin dandaʼu” jedhee deebise.
6 So they took Jeremiah and put him in the cistern belonging to Malchiah, the king's son, which was in the guard's courtyard. They lowered Jeremiah down with ropes into the cistern. It didn't have any water, only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.
Kanaafuu isaan Ermiyaasin fuudhanii boolla bishaanii kan Malkiyaa ilma mootichaa keessa buusan; boolli bishaanii sunis oobdii eegumsaa keessa ture. Isaan funyoodhaan Ermiyaasin boolla sana keessa buusan; boolli sun dhoqqee malee bishaan hin qabu ture; Ermiyaasis dhoqqee keessa dhidhime.
7 Ebed-melech the Cushite, a royal official in the king's palace, found out that they had put Jeremiah in the cistern. The king was sitting at the Benjamin Gate,
Garuu Ebeed-Melek qondaalli Itoophiyaa kan masaraa mootii keessa ture sun akka isaan Ermiyaasin boolla bishaanii keessa buusan dhagaʼe. Utuma mootichi Karra Beniyaam bira taaʼee jiruus,
8 so Ebed-melech left the palace and went to talk to the king
Ebeed-Melek masaraadhaa baʼee dhaqee akkana isaan jedhe;
9 “My lord the king, all these terrible things these men have done to Jeremiah the prophet are evil. They've put him in the cistern, and he'll starve to death there because there's no more bread left in the city.”
“Yaa gooftaa koo mooticha, jarri kun waan Ermiyaas raajicha godhan hundaan waan hamaa hojjetaniiru. Isaan akka inni beelaan duʼuuf yeroo buddeenni tokko iyyuu magaalaa keessa hin jirretti boolla bishaanii keessa isa buusan.”
10 So the king gave the order to Ebed-melech the Cushite, “Take thirty men with you and go and pull Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”
Mootichis ergasii Ebeed-Melek namicha Itoophiyaa sanaan, “Nama soddoma asii fudhadhuu dhaqiitii utuu inni hin duʼin Ermiyaas raajicha boolla bishaanii keessaa baasi” jedhee ajaje.
11 Ebed-melech took the men and went to the storehouse under the palace. He took some rags and old clothes from there and then went to the cistern where he lowered them with ropes to Jeremiah.
Kanaafuu Ebeed-Melek namoota sana fudhatee gara kutaa mankuusaa masaraa mootichaa keessaatiin jala jiru sanaa dhaqe. Innis darsaa fi wayyaa moofaa achii fudhatee funyoon gara boolla bishaaniitti Ermiyaasiif gad buuse.
12 Ebed-melech the Cushite called down to Jeremiah, “Put these rags and old clothes under your arms to protect you from the ropes.” Jeremiah did so,
Ebeed-Melek namichi Itoophiyaa sunis Ermiyaasiin, “Akka funyoon si hin luqqisneef darsaa fi wayyaa moofaa bobaa kee jala kaaʼadhu” jedhe. Ermiyaasis akkasuma godhe;
13 and using the ropes they pulled him up and took him out of the cistern. Jeremiah stayed there in the guard's courtyard.
isaanis funyoo sanaan ol harkisanii boolla bishaanii keessaa isa baasan. Ermiyaasis oobdii eegumsaa keessa ture.
14 Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and met him at the third Temple entrance. “I need to ask you something,” the king told Jeremiah. “You mustn't hide anything from me.”
Zedeqiyaa Mootichi Ermiyaasitti nama ergee gara balbala sadaffaa mana qulqullummaa Waaqayyootti isa fichisiise. Mootichis Ermiyaasiin, “Ani waa sin gaafadha; ati waan tokko illee na hin dhoksin” jedhe.
15 “If I tell you then you'll definitely have me killed,” Jeremiah replied. “Even if I were to give you advice, you wouldn't listen to me anyway.”
Ermiyaasis Zedeqiyaadhaan, “Yoo ani deebii siif kenne, ati na hin ajjeeftuu? Yoo ani si gorse iyyuu ati na hin dhageessu” jedhe.
16 King Zedekiah solemnly promised Jeremiah in private, “As the Lord lives, who gave us this life, I won't have you killed, and I won't hand you over to those who want to kill you.”
Zedeqiyaa Mootichi garuu, “Dhugaa Waaqayyo jiraataa isa jireenya nuu kenne sanaa ani si hin ajjeesu; warra lubbuu kee balleessuu barbaadanittis dabarsee si hin kennu” jedhee kakuu kana dhoksaatti Ermiyaasiif kakate.
17 Then Jeremiah told Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you hand yourself over to the officers of the king of Babylon, then you'll live. Jerusalem won't be burned down, and you and your family will survive.
Kana irratti Ermiyaas deebisee Zedeqiyaadhaan akkana jedhe; “Waaqayyo Waaqni, inni Waan Hunda Dandaʼu, Waaqni Israaʼel akkana jedha: ‘Yoo ati qondaaltota mootii Baabilonitti harka kennatte lubbuun kee duʼa ni oolfamti; magaalaan kunis hin gubamtu; atii fi maatiin kee ni jiraattu.
18 But if you don't hand yourself over to the officers of the king of Babylon, then this city will be given to the Babylonians. They will burn it down, and you yourself won't escape being captured.”
Garuu yoo ati qondaaltota mootii Baabilonitti harka kennachuu baatte magaalaan kun dabarfamtee Baabilonotatti ni kennamti; isaanis ishee gubu; ati mataan kee iyyuu isaan jalaa hin baatu.’”
19 But King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the those people of Judah who have gone over to the Babylonians, because the Babylonians might hand me over the them so they could abuse me.”
Zedeqiyaa Mootichi Ermiyaasiin, “Ani Yihuudoota Baabilonotatti galan nan sodaadha; Baabilononni dabarsanii isaanitti na kennanii isaan immoo natti taphatuutii” jedhe.
20 “They won't hand you over,” Jeremiah replied. “If you obey what the Lord says by doing what I tell you, then things will go well for you and you'll live.
Ermiyaasis akkana jedhee deebise; “Isaan dabarsanii si hin kennan; ati waan ani sitti himu gochuudhaan Waaqayyoof ajajami. Yoos ati milkooftee lubbuun kees duʼa oolfamti.
21 But if you refuse to hand yourself over, this is what the Lord has told me:
Garuu yoo ati harka kennachuu didde, Waaqayyo waan kana naa ibseera:
22 All the women who are left in the palace of the king of Judah will be led out and handed over to the officials of the king of Babylon Those women will say: ‘Those good friends of yours! You were taken in by them and conquered by them. Your feet got stuck in the mid, so they abandoned you.’
Dubartoonni mana mootii Yihuudaa keessatti hafan hundi gara qondaaltota mootii Baabilonitti geeffamu. Dubartoonni sunis akkana jedhu: “‘Michoonni kee kanneen ati amanatte sun, si gowwoomsanii; si moʼatan. Miilli kee dhoqqee keessa lixe; michoonni kees si dhiisanii deeman.’
23 All your wives and children will be handed over to the Chaldeans. And you yourself will not escape, for you will be captured by the king of Babylon, and Jerusalem will be burned down.”
“Niitonni keetii fi ijoolleen kee hundi Baabilonotatti geeffamu. Ati mataan kee iyyuu mootii Baabiloniin qabamta malee isaan harkaa hin baatu; magaalaan kunis ni gubamti.”
24 Zedekiah warned Jeremiah, “Nobody can find out about this conversation, otherwise you'll die.
Zedeqiyaan Ermiyaasiin akkana jedhe; “Dubbii nu amma dubbanne kana namni tokko iyyuu hin beekin; yoo kanaa achii ati ni duutaa.
25 If the officers find out that I've talked with you, and they come and ask you, ‘Tell us what you and the king were talking about! Don't hide anything from us, or we'll kill you;’
Yoo qondaaltonni akka ani si wajjin haasaʼe dhagaʼanii si bira dhufanii, ‘Waan ati mootiidhaan jettee fi waan mootiin siin jedhe nutti himi; nu hin dhoksin; yoo kanaa achii nu si ajjeefnaa’ siin jedhan,
26 then you are to tell them, ‘I was asking the king to grant my request not to return me to the house of Jonathan to die there.’”
‘Ani akka inni gara mana Yoonaataanitti deebisee na ergee anis achitti hin duuneef mooticha kadhachaa ture’ jedhiin.”
27 When all the officers came to Jeremiah wanting to know, he repeated to them exactly what the king had told him to say. So they didn't ask him anything more because no one had heard what had been said.
Ergasii qondaaltonni hundi dhufanii Ermiyaasin gaafatan; innis waan mootichi akka inni dubbatu isa ajaje hunda isaanitti hime. Sababii namni waan inni mooticha wajjin dubbate dhagaʼe tokko iyyuu hin turiniif, jarri waan kana caalaa homaa isatti hin dubbanne.
28 Jeremiah remained there in the guard's courtyard until the day Jerusalem was captured.
Ermiyaasis hamma gaafa Yerusaalem qabamteetti oobdii eegumsaa sana keessa ture.
