Jeremiah 38
1 Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchijah heard what Jeremiah was telling everyone:
Sefatià figlio di Mattàn, Godolia figlio di Pascùr, Iucàl figlio di Selemia e Pascùr figlio di Malchia udirono queste parole che Geremia rivolgeva a tutto il popolo:
2 This is what the Lord says: Anyone who remains in this city will die from war and famine and disease, but anyone who goes over to the Babylonians will live. Their reward will be to save their lives.
«Dice il Signore: Chi rimane in questa città morirà di spada, di fame e di peste, mentre chi passerà ai Caldei vivrà: per lui la sua vita sarà come bottino e vivrà.
3 This is what the Lord says: Be sure of this—Jerusalem will be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon. He is going to capture it.
Dice il Signore: Certo questa città sarà data in mano all'esercito del re di Babilonia che la prenderà».
4 The officers told the king, “This man deserves to die because he's demoralizing the defenders left in the city, and all the people too, by telling them this. This man isn't trying to help these people, he's only going to destroy them.”
I capi allora dissero al re: «Si metta a morte questo uomo, appunto perché egli scoraggia i guerrieri che sono rimasti in questa città e scoraggia tutto il popolo dicendo loro simili parole, poiché questo uomo non cerca il benessere del popolo, ma il male».
5 “Well, you can do whatever you want to him,” King Zedekiah replied. “I can't stop you.”
Il re Sedecìa rispose: «Ecco, egli è nelle vostre mani; il re infatti non ha poteri contro di voi».
6 So they took Jeremiah and put him in the cistern belonging to Malchiah, the king's son, which was in the guard's courtyard. They lowered Jeremiah down with ropes into the cistern. It didn't have any water, only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.
Essi allora presero Geremia e lo gettarono nella cisterna di Malchia, principe regale, la quale si trovava nell'atrio della prigione. Calarono Geremia con corde. Nella cisterna non c'era acqua ma fango, e così Geremia affondò nel fango.
7 Ebed-melech the Cushite, a royal official in the king's palace, found out that they had put Jeremiah in the cistern. The king was sitting at the Benjamin Gate,
Ebed-Mèlech l'Etiope, un eunuco che era nella reggia, sentì che Geremia era stato messo nella cisterna. Ora, mentre il re stava alla porta di Beniamino,
8 so Ebed-melech left the palace and went to talk to the king
Ebed-Mèlech uscì dalla reggia e disse al re:
9 “My lord the king, all these terrible things these men have done to Jeremiah the prophet are evil. They've put him in the cistern, and he'll starve to death there because there's no more bread left in the city.”
«Re mio signore, quegli uomini hanno agito male facendo quanto hanno fatto al profeta Geremia, gettandolo nella cisterna. Egli morirà di fame sul posto, perché non c'è più pane nella città».
10 So the king gave the order to Ebed-melech the Cushite, “Take thirty men with you and go and pull Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”
Allora il re diede quest'ordine a Ebed-Mèlech l'Etiope: «Prendi con te da qui tre uomini e fà risalire il profeta Geremia dalla cisterna prima che muoia».
11 Ebed-melech took the men and went to the storehouse under the palace. He took some rags and old clothes from there and then went to the cistern where he lowered them with ropes to Jeremiah.
Ebed-Mèlech prese con sé gli uomini, andò nella reggia, nel guardaroba del tesoro e, presi di là pezzi di cenci e di stracci, li gettò a Geremia nella cisterna con corde.
12 Ebed-melech the Cushite called down to Jeremiah, “Put these rags and old clothes under your arms to protect you from the ropes.” Jeremiah did so,
Ebed-Mèlech disse a Geremia: «Su, mettiti i pezzi dei cenci e degli stracci alle ascelle sotto le corde». Geremia fece così.
13 and using the ropes they pulled him up and took him out of the cistern. Jeremiah stayed there in the guard's courtyard.
Allora tirarono su Geremia con le corde, facendolo uscire dalla cisterna, e Geremia rimase nell'atrio della prigione.
14 Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and met him at the third Temple entrance. “I need to ask you something,” the king told Jeremiah. “You mustn't hide anything from me.”
Il re Sedecìa mandò a prendere il profeta Geremia e, fattolo venire presso di sé al terzo ingresso del tempio del Signore, il re gli disse: «Ti domando una cosa, non nascondermi nulla!».
15 “If I tell you then you'll definitely have me killed,” Jeremiah replied. “Even if I were to give you advice, you wouldn't listen to me anyway.”
Geremia rispose a Sedecìa: «Se te la dico, non mi farai forse morire? E se ti do un consiglio, non mi darai ascolto».
16 King Zedekiah solemnly promised Jeremiah in private, “As the Lord lives, who gave us this life, I won't have you killed, and I won't hand you over to those who want to kill you.”
Allora il re Sedecìa giurò in segreto a Geremia: «Com'è vero che vive il Signore che ci ha dato questa vita, non ti farò morire né ti consegnerò in balìa di quegli uomini che attentano alla tua vita!».
17 Then Jeremiah told Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you hand yourself over to the officers of the king of Babylon, then you'll live. Jerusalem won't be burned down, and you and your family will survive.
Geremia allora disse a Sedecìa: «Dice il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, Dio di Israele: Se uscirai incontro ai generali del re di Babilonia, allora avrai salva la vita e questa città non sarà data in fiamme; tu e la tua famiglia vivrete;
18 But if you don't hand yourself over to the officers of the king of Babylon, then this city will be given to the Babylonians. They will burn it down, and you yourself won't escape being captured.”
se invece non uscirai incontro ai generali del re di Babilonia, allora questa città sarà messa in mano ai Caldei, i quali la daranno alle fiamme e tu non scamperai dalle loro mani».
19 But King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the those people of Judah who have gone over to the Babylonians, because the Babylonians might hand me over the them so they could abuse me.”
Il re Sedecìa rispose a Geremia: «Ho paura dei Giudei che sono passati ai Caldei; temo di essere consegnato in loro potere e che essi mi maltrattino».
20 “They won't hand you over,” Jeremiah replied. “If you obey what the Lord says by doing what I tell you, then things will go well for you and you'll live.
Ma Geremia disse: «Non ti consegneranno a loro. Ascolta la voce del Signore riguardo a ciò che ti dico; ti andrà bene e tu vivrai;
21 But if you refuse to hand yourself over, this is what the Lord has told me:
se, invece, rifiuti di uscire, questo il Signore mi ha rivelato:
22 All the women who are left in the palace of the king of Judah will be led out and handed over to the officials of the king of Babylon Those women will say: ‘Those good friends of yours! You were taken in by them and conquered by them. Your feet got stuck in the mid, so they abandoned you.’
Ti hanno abbindolato e ingannato gli uomini di tua fiducia. I tuoi piedi si sono affondati nella melma, mentre essi sono spariti. Ecco, tutte le donne rimaste nella reggia di Giuda saranno condotte ai generali del re di Babilonia e diranno:
23 All your wives and children will be handed over to the Chaldeans. And you yourself will not escape, for you will be captured by the king of Babylon, and Jerusalem will be burned down.”
Tutte le donne e tutti i tuoi figli saranno condotti ai Caldei e tu non sfuggirai alle loro mani, ma sarai tenuto prigioniero in mano del re di Babilonia e questa città sarà data alle fiamme».
24 Zedekiah warned Jeremiah, “Nobody can find out about this conversation, otherwise you'll die.
Sedecìa disse a Geremia: «Nessuno sappia di questi discorsi perché tu non muoia.
25 If the officers find out that I've talked with you, and they come and ask you, ‘Tell us what you and the king were talking about! Don't hide anything from us, or we'll kill you;’
Se i dignitari sentiranno che ho parlato con te e verranno da te e ti domanderanno: Riferiscici quanto hai detto al re, non nasconderci nulla, altrimenti ti uccideremo; raccontaci che cosa ti ha detto il re,
26 then you are to tell them, ‘I was asking the king to grant my request not to return me to the house of Jonathan to die there.’”
tu risponderai loro: Ho presentato la supplica al re perché non mi mandasse di nuovo nella casa di Giònata a morirvi».
27 When all the officers came to Jeremiah wanting to know, he repeated to them exactly what the king had told him to say. So they didn't ask him anything more because no one had heard what had been said.
Ora tutti i dignitari vennero da Geremia e lo interrogarono; egli rispose proprio come il re gli aveva ordinato, così che lo lasciarono tranquillo, poiché la conversazione non era stata ascoltata.
28 Jeremiah remained there in the guard's courtyard until the day Jerusalem was captured.
Geremia rimase nell'atrio della prigione fino al giorno in cui fu presa Gerusalemme.
