Jeremiah 21
1 This is the message that came to Jeremiah from the Lord when King Zedekiah sent Pashhur, son of Malchijah, and the priest Zephaniah, son of Maaseiah to talk with him. They said,
Palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte de Yahvé, cuando el rey Sedequías le envió a Pashur, hijo de Malquías, y a Sofonías, hijo de Maasías, el sacerdote, diciendo:
2 “Please speak with Lord on our behalf because Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is attacking us. Perhaps the Lord will do some miracle for us like all those miracles he used to do, so that Nebuchadnezzar will retreat from us.”
“Por favor, consulta a Yahvé por nosotros, porque Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, nos hace la guerra. Tal vez Yahvé nos trate según todas sus maravillas, para que se retire de nosotros”.
3 But Jeremiah replied, “Tell Zedekiah this:
Entonces Jeremías les dijo: “Dile a Sedequías
4 This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I'm going to turn the weapons you're holding against you, the weapons you're using to fight the king of Babylon and the Babylonian army outside the wall besieging you. I'm going to bring them right into the center of this city.
‘Yahvé, el Dios de Israel, dice: “He aquí que yo haré retroceder las armas de guerra que están en tus manos, con las que luchas contra el rey de Babilonia, y contra los caldeos que te asedian fuera de las murallas; y los reuniré en medio de esta ciudad.
5 I myself will fight against you with all my power and might, with the full force of my furious anger.
Yo mismo lucharé contra ti con mano extendida y con brazo fuerte, con ira, con enojo y con gran indignación.
6 I will kill those living in this city, human beings and animals. They will die from a terrible plague.
Golpearé a los habitantes de esta ciudad, tanto a los hombres como a los animales. Morirán de una gran peste.
7 After that, declares the Lord, I'm going to hand you over, Zedekiah king of Judah, as well as your officers and the people who are left in this city after the plague and war and famine, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to your enemies who want you dead. He will attack you; he won't spare you or show you any pity or mercy.
Después — dice el Señor — libraré a Sedequías, rey de Judá, a sus siervos y al pueblo, a los que queden en esta ciudad, de la peste, de la espada y del hambre, en manos de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, en manos de sus enemigos y en manos de los que buscan su vida. Los golpeará con el filo de la espada. No los perdonará, ni se apiadará, ni tendrá piedad”.
8 Tell the people this as well: This is what the Lord says: Look, I'm placing before you the path of life and the path of death.
“Dirás a este pueblo: ‘Dice el Señor: “He aquí que pongo ante ti el camino de la vida y el camino de la muerte.
9 If you stay in this city you'll die either by sword and famine and plague, but if you leave and surrender to the Babylonians who are besieging you, you will live. In fact it will be like gaining your life as plunder from a war.
El que se quede en esta ciudad morirá por la espada, por el hambre y por la peste, pero el que salga y pase a los caldeos que te asedian, vivirá y escapará con vida.
10 For I am determined to bring disaster on this city, and not blessings, declares the Lord. It will be handed over to the king of Babylon, who will destroy it with fire.
Porque he puesto mi rostro sobre esta ciudad para mal y no para bien”, dice el Señor. “Será entregada en manos del rey de Babilonia, y él la quemará con fuego”.
11 In addition tell the royal family of the king of Judah to listen to the Lord's message:
“En cuanto a la casa del rey de Judá, escucha la palabra de Yahvé:
12 Descendants of David, this is what the Lord says: Make sure you judge fairly every day. Protect those who are being unjustly treated from those corrupt people, otherwise because of their evil actions my anger will blaze out like fire that can't be put out.
Casa de David, dice Yahvé, ‘Ejecutar la justicia por la mañana, y libera al que es robado de la mano del opresor, para que mi ira no se apague como el fuego, y arderá de manera que nadie pueda apagarlo, por la maldad de tus actos.
13 Watch out, because I'm going to fight against you people who live above the valley on top of a flat rock, declares the Lord. You say, ‘Who can attack us? Who can break down our defenses?’
He aquí que estoy contra ti, oh habitante del valle, y de la roca de la llanura’, dice Yahvé. Los que decís: “¿Quién bajará contra nosotros?” o, “¿Quién entraría en nuestras casas?”
14 I'm going to punish you as you deserve for what you've done, declares the Lord. I will set your forest on fire and it will burn up everything around you.”
Te castigaré según el fruto de tus obras, dice Yahvé; y encenderé un fuego en su bosque, y devorará todo lo que la rodea”.
