< Jeremiah 18 >
1 This message came to Jeremiah from the Lord:
Èyí ni ọ̀rọ̀ Olúwa tí ó tọ Jeremiah wá wí pe:
2 Go down right away to the potter's house. I will give you my message there.
“Sọ̀kalẹ̀ lọ sí ilé amọ̀kòkò, níbẹ̀ ni èmi yóò ti bá ọ sọ̀rọ̀.”
3 I went down to the potter's house and saw him working at his potter's wheel.
Nígbà náà ni mo lọ sí ilé amọ̀kòkò mo sì rí i tí ó ń ṣiṣẹ́ kan lórí kẹ̀kẹ́.
4 But the pot that he was making from the clay went wrong. So he made it into something different as he thought best.
Ṣùgbọ́n ìkòkò tí ó ń mọ láti ara amọ̀ bàjẹ́ ní ọwọ́ rẹ̀, nítorí náà ni amọ̀kòkò fi ṣe ìkòkò mìíràn, ó mọ ọ́n bí èyí tí ó dára jù ní ojú rẹ̀.
5 The Lord's message came to me, saying,
Nígbà náà ni ọ̀rọ̀ Olúwa tọ̀ mí wá pé:
6 People of Israel, declares the Lord, can't I deal with you just like this potter does with his clay? I hold you in my hand just like clay in the potter's hand, people of Israel.
“Ẹyin ilé Israẹli, èmi kò ha lè ṣe fún un yín gẹ́gẹ́ bí amọ̀kòkò yìí ti ṣe?” ni Olúwa wí. “Gẹ́gẹ́ bí amọ̀ ní ọwọ́ amọ̀kòkò bẹ́ẹ̀ ni ẹ̀yin rí ní ọwọ́ mi, ẹ̀yin ilé Israẹli.
7 At one time it could happen that I announce that a nation or a kingdom is going to be uprooted, torn down, and destroyed.
Bí ó bá jẹ́ ìgbà kan, tí èmi kéde kí orílẹ̀-èdè tàbí ìjọba kan di fífà tu láti dojúdé àti láti parun,
8 However, if that nation I warned gives up its evil ways, then I will change my mind regarding the disaster I was about to bring.
tí orílẹ̀-èdè ti mo kìlọ̀ fún bá yípadà kúrò nínú ìwà búburú wọn, nígbà náà ni Èmi yóò yí ọkàn mi padà nínú àjálù tí mo ti rò láti ṣe sí wọn.
9 At another time I could announce that I'm going to build up and give power to a nation or a kingdom.
Ní ìgbà mìíràn tí èmi bá tún kéde láti tẹ̀dó tàbí gbin orílẹ̀-èdè kan tàbí ìjọba kan.
10 But if it does evil in my sight and refuses to listen to my voice, then I will change my mind regarding the good I had planned for it.
Bí ó bá sì ṣe búburú níwájú mi, tí kò sì gba ohùn mi gbọ́, nígbà náà ni èmi yóò yí ọkàn mi padà ní ti rere, èyí tí mo wí pé, èmi ó ṣe fún wọn.
11 So tell the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem that this is what the Lord says: Watch out! I am preparing disaster for you, and working out a plan against you. All of you, give up your evil ways. Live right and act right!
“Ǹjẹ́ nísinsin yìí, sọ fún àwọn ènìyàn Juda àti àwọn olùgbé Jerusalẹmu wí pé, ‘Báyìí ní Olúwa wí: Wò ó! Èmi ń gbèrò ibi sí yin, èmi sì ń ṣe ìpinnu kan lórí yín. Nítorí náà ẹ yípadà kúrò lọ́nà búburú yín kí olúkúlùkù yín sì tún ọ̀nà àti ìṣe rẹ̀ ṣe.’
12 But they'll say, “We just can't! We'll do whatever we want. Each of us will stubbornly follow our own evil thinking.”
Ṣùgbọ́n wọn yóò sọ wí pé, ‘Kò ṣe nǹkan kan, àwa yóò tẹ̀síwájú nínú èrò wa, ẹnìkọ̀ọ̀kan wa, yóò hùwà agídí ọkàn búburú rẹ̀.’”
13 Consequently this is what the Lord says: Ask around the nations—has anybody ever heard anything like this? Virgin Israel has acted really badly.
Nítorí náà báyìí ni Olúwa wí: “Ẹ béèrè nínú orílẹ̀-èdè, ẹni tí ó bá ti gbọ́ irú nǹkan wọ̀nyí ri? Ohun tí ó burú gidi ni wúńdíá Israẹli ti ṣe.
14 Does the snow of Lebanon ever disappear from its rocky mountain-tops? Do its cool waters that flow from such distant sources ever dry up?
Ǹjẹ́ omi ojo dídì Lebanoni yóò ha dá láti máa sàn láti ibi àpáta? Tàbí odò tí ó jìnnà, tí ó tútù, tí ó ń sàn, yóò ha gbẹ bí?
15 But my people have rejected me! They burn incense to useless idols which trip them up, making them leave the old roads in order to walk down unmade paths instead of the highway.
Nítorí àwọn ènìyàn mi gbàgbé mi, wọ́n sun tùràrí fún òrìṣà asán, tí ó mú wọn kọsẹ̀ ní ọ̀nà wọn, àti ọ̀nà wọn àtijọ́. Wọ́n mú wọn rìn ní ọ̀nà àtijọ́, àti ní ojú ọ̀nà ti a kò ṣe.
16 They have turned their country into a horrific wasteland, a place that will always be treated with contempt. People passing by will be shocked, shaking their heads in disbelief.
Ilẹ̀ wọn yóò wà lásán yóò sì di nǹkan ẹ̀gàn títí láé, gbogbo àwọn tí ó ń kọjá yóò bẹ̀rù, wọn yóò sì mi orí wọn.
17 Like a strong wind from the east I will scatter them before the enemy. I will turn my back on them and not look at them when their time of trouble comes.
Gẹ́gẹ́ bí afẹ́fẹ́ láti ìlà-oòrùn, Èmi yóò tú wọn ká lójú àwọn ọ̀tá wọn. Èmi yóò sì kọ ẹ̀yìn sí wọn, n kì yóò kọjú sí wọn ní ọjọ́ àjálù wọn.”
18 Some people decided, “We need a plan to deal with Jeremiah. There'll still be priests to explain the law, there'll still be wise people to give advice, and there'll still be prophets to give prophecies. Let's organize a smear campaign against him so we don't have to listen to a word he says.”
Wọ́n sọ wí pé, “Wá, jẹ́ kí a lọ ṣọ̀tẹ̀ sí Jeremiah, nítorí òfin ìkọ́ni láti ẹnu àwọn àlùfáà kì yóò jásí asán, tàbí ìmọ̀ràn fún àwọn ọlọ́gbọ́n tàbí ọ̀rọ̀ láti ẹnu àwọn wòlíì. Nítorí náà wá, ẹ jẹ́ kí a kọlù ú pẹ̀lú ahọ́n wa, kí a má sì ṣe tẹ́tí sí ohunkóhun tí ó bá sọ.”
19 Lord, please pay attention to what's happening to me! Listen to what my accusers are saying!
Dẹtí sí ọ̀rọ̀ mi Olúwa, gbọ́ ohun tí àwọn tí ó fi mí sùn ń sọ.
20 Should good be paid back with evil? Yet they have dug a pit to trap me! Remember how I stood before you to plead on their behalf, to stop you being angry with them?
Ṣe kí a fi rere san búburú? Síbẹ̀ wọ́n ti gbẹ́ kòtò fún mi. Rántí pé mo dúró níwájú rẹ, mo sì sọ̀rọ̀ nítorí wọn, láti yí ìbínú rẹ kúrò lọ́dọ̀ wọn.
21 But now may their children starve; may they be killed by the sword. May their wives lose their children and their husbands; may their husbands die from disease; may their young men be killed in battle.
Nítorí náà, jẹ́ kí ìyàn mú ọmọ wọn jọ̀wọ́ wọn fún ọwọ́ idà jẹ́ kí ìyàwó wọn kí ó di aláìlọ́mọ àti opó jẹ́ kí a pa àwọn ọkùnrin wọn kí a sì fi idà pa àwọn ọ̀dọ́mọkùnrin wọn lójú ogun.
22 May cries of agony be heard from their houses when you suddenly bring invaders to attack them, because they dug a pit to capture me and hid traps to catch me as I walk along.
Jẹ́ kí a gbọ́ ohùn ẹkún láti ilé wọn nígbà tí ó bá mu àwọn jagunjagun kọlù wọ́n lójijì nítorí wọ́n ti gbẹ́ kòtò láti mú mi. Wọ́n ti dẹ okùn fún ẹsẹ̀ mi.
23 But Lord, you know about all their plots to try and kill me. Don't forgive their wickedness; don't wipe away their sin. Bring them down! Deal with them when you're angry!
Ṣùgbọ́n ìwọ Olúwa mọ gbogbo ète wọn láti pa mí, má ṣe dárí ẹ̀bi wọn jì wọ́n bẹ́ẹ̀ ni má ṣe pa ẹ̀ṣẹ̀ wọn rẹ́ kúrò lójú rẹ. Jẹ́ kí wọn kí ó ṣubú níwájú rẹ, bẹ́ẹ̀ ni kí ìwọ kí ó sì ṣe sí wọn nígbà ìbínú rẹ.
