Isaiah 9
1 Even so, there will be no more darkness for those who suffered. In the past he humiliated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will bring honor to Galilee of the foreigners that is on the route that leads from Jordan to the sea.
Maar het land, dat beangstigd was, zal niet gans verduisterd worden; gelijk als Hij het in den eersten tijd verachtelijk gemaakt heeft, naar het land van Zebulon aan, en naar het land van Nafthali aan, alzo heeft Hij het in het laatste heerlijk gemaakt, naar den weg zeewaarts aan gelegen over de Jordaan, aan Galilea der heidenen.
2 People walking in the dark will see a bright light; a light will shine on those living in a land of total darkness.
Het volk, dat in duisternis wandelt, zal een groot licht zien; degenen, die wonen in het land van de schaduw des doods, over dezelve zal een licht schijnen.
3 You will make the nation grow enormously, and will make it extremely happy. The people will celebrate before you as people celebrate at harvest time, as soldiers celebrate when dividing up what has been looted.
Gij hebt dit volk vermenigvuldigd, maar Gij hebt de blijdschap niet groot gemaakt; zij zullen nochtans blijde wezen voor Uw aangezicht, gelijk men zich verblijdt in den oogst, gelijk men verheugd is, wanneer men de buit uitdeelt.
4 For you will smash the yoke that burdens them down, the bar across their shoulders, and the oppressors' rod used to beat them just as you did when you defeated the Midianite army.
Want het juk van hun last, en den stok hunner schouders, en den staf desgenen, die hen dreef, hebt Gij verbroken, gelijk ten dage der Midianieten;
5 For every army boot that noisily trampled people down, and every uniform soaked in blood—they are going to be burned, fuel for the fire.
Toen de ganse strijd dergenen, die streden, met gedruis geschiedde, en de klederen in het bloed gewenteld en verbrand werden, tot een voedsel des vuurs.
6 For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us. He will bear the responsibility to rule. He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Want een Kind is ons geboren, een Zoon is ons gegeven, en de heerschappij is op Zijn schouder; en men noemt Zijn naam Wonderlijk, Raad, Sterke God, Vader der eeuwigheid, Vredevorst;
7 His rule and the peace he brings know no limits and will never come to an end. He will sit on David's throne and rule his kingdom, making it secure. He will operate from principles of justice and goodness, from the time he begins his rule and for all eternity. The Lord Almighty is determined to make this happen.
Der grootheid dezer heerschappij en des vredes zal geen einde zijn op den troon van David en in zijn koninkrijk, om dat te bevestigen, en dat te sterken met gericht en met gerechtigheid, van nu aan tot in eeuwigheid toe. De ijver des HEEREN der heirscharen zal zulks doen.
8 The Lord has sent a message directed against Jacob, and its consequences will fall upon Israel.
De Heere heeft een woord gezonden in Jakob, en het is gevallen in Israel.
9 All the people will soon realize it—Ephraim and the people who live in Samaria. Proudly and arrogantly they say,
En al dit volk zal het gewaar worden, Efraim en de inwoner van Samaria; in hoogmoed en grootsheid des harten, zeggende:
10 “The brick buildings have collapsed, but we will rebuild them with dressed stone; the sycamore fig trees have been cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.”
De tichelstenen zijn gevallen, maar met uitgehouwen stenen zullen wij wederom bouwen; de wilde vijgebomen zijn afgehouwen, maar wij zullen ze in cederen veranderen;
11 But the Lord has strengthened Rezin's enemies against Israel and has encouraged them.
Want de HEERE zal Rezins tegenpartijders tegen hem verheffen, en Hij zal zijn vijanden samen vermengen:
12 Arameans from the east and Philistines from the west have greedily eaten swallowed Israel up. In all of this he is still angry and his hand is still raised.
De Syriers van voren, en de Filistijnen van achteren, dat zij Israel opeten met vollen mond. Om dit alles keert Zijn toorn zich niet af, maar Zijn hand is nog uitgestrekt.
13 But the people didn't return to the one who punished them; they didn't come to worship the Lord Almighty.
Want dit volk keert zich niet tot Dien, Die het slaat, en den HEERE der heirscharen zoeken zij niet.
14 So in just a single day the Lord will chop off Israel's head and tail, palm branch and reed.
Daarom zal de HEERE afhouwen uit Israel den kop en den staart, den tak en de bieze, op een dag.
15 Elders and honorable people are the head, and prophets who teach lies are the tail.
(De oude en aanzienlijke, die is de kop; maar de profeet, die valsheid leert, die is de staart.)
16 The people's leaders have misled them; those who were guided by them are confused.
Want de leiders dezes volks zijn verleiders, en die van hen geleid worden, worden ingeslokt.
17 As a result the Lord isn't pleased with their young men, he has no compassion for their orphans and widows, because all of them are hypocrites and do what's evil—they all talk stupidly. In all of this he is still angry and his hand is still raised.
Daarom zal zich de Heere niet verblijden over hun jongelingen, en hunner wezen en hunner weduwen zal Hij zich niet ontfermen, want zij zijn allen te zamen huichelaars en boosdoeners, en alle mond spreekt dwaasheid. Om dit alles keert Zijn toorn zich niet af, maar Zijn hand is nog uitgestrekt.
18 For wickedness blazes like a fire, burning up brambles and thorns, setting the forest on fire, sending a column of smoke swirling upwards.
Want de goddeloosheid brandt als vuur, doornen en distelen zal zij verteren, en zal aansteken de verwarde struiken des wouds, die zich verheven hebben als de verheffing des rooks.
19 The anger of the Lord Almighty burns the land. People are like fuel for the fire, and nobody tries to help anyone else.
Vanwege de verbolgenheid des HEEREN der heirscharen, zal het land verduisterd worden; en het volk zal zijn als een voedsel des vuurs: de een zal den ander niet verschonen.
20 People destroy others on the right, yet they're still hungry for more; people destroy others on the left, but they're still not satisfied. In the end they even destroy themselves!
Zo hij ter rechterhand snijdt, zal hij toch hongeren, en zo hij ter linkerhand eet, zal hij toch niet verzadigd worden; een iegelijk zal het vlees zijns arms eten;
21 Manasseh destroys Ephraim, and Ephraim destroys Manasseh. Together they turn to destroy Judah. In all of this he is still angry and his hand is still raised.
Manasse Efraim, en Efraim Manasse, en zij zullen te zamen tegen Juda zijn. Om dit alles keert Zijn toorn zich niet af, maar Zijn hand is nog uitgestrekt.
