Genesis 6
1 People started to increase in number and spread out across the earth. Daughters were born to them,
| ויהי כי החל האדם לרב על פני האדמה ובנות ילדו להם׃ |
2 and the sons of God saw that these women were beautiful, and they took whichever ones they wanted.
| ויראו בני האלהים את בנות האדם כי טבת הנה ויקחו להם נשים מכל אשר בחרו׃ |
3 Then the Lord said, “My life-giving Spirit will not remain in these people forever, because they are only mortal. The time they have left will be 120 years.”
| ויאמר יהוה לא ידון רוחי באדם לעלם בשגם הוא בשר והיו ימיו מאה ועשרים שנה׃ |
4 There were giants on earth in those days, and also later on. They were born after the sons of God slept with the daughters of these people. Their sons became the great warriors and famous men of ancient times.
| הנפלים היו בארץ בימים ההם וגם אחרי כן אשר יבאו בני האלהים אל בנות האדם וילדו להם המה הגברים אשר מעולם אנשי השם׃ |
5 The Lord saw how terribly evil people on earth had become—every single thought in their minds was evil all the time!
| וירא יהוה כי רבה רעת האדם בארץ וכל יצר מחשבת לבו רק רע כל היום׃ |
6 The Lord was sorry he'd made human beings to live on the earth; it made him very sad to think about it.
| וינחם יהוה כי עשה את האדם בארץ ויתעצב אל לבו׃ |
7 So the Lord said, “I'm going to wipe out these people I created from the earth, and not only them but also the animals, the creatures that run along the ground, and the birds, because I'm sorry I made them.”
| ויאמר יהוה אמחה את האדם אשר בראתי מעל פני האדמה מאדם עד בהמה עד רמש ועד עוף השמים כי נחמתי כי עשיתם׃ |
8 But the Lord was pleased with Noah.
| ונח מצא חן בעיני יהוה׃ |
9 This is the story of Noah and his family. Noah was a man of integrity, living a moral life among the people of his time. He had a close relationship with God.
| אלה תולדת נח נח איש צדיק תמים היה בדרתיו את האלהים התהלך נח׃ |
10 Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
| ויולד נח שלשה בנים את שם את חם ואת יפת׃ |
11 God saw how corrupt the whole world had become, full of violent and lawless people.
| ותשחת הארץ לפני האלהים ותמלא הארץ חמס׃ |
12 God recognized that the corruption in the world was due to everyone on earth living corrupt lives.
| וירא אלהים את הארץ והנה נשחתה כי השחית כל בשר את דרכו על הארץ׃ |
13 So God told Noah, “I have decided to put an end to all people on earth because they are all violent and lawless. I myself am going to destroy all of them, along with the earth.
| ויאמר אלהים לנח קץ כל בשר בא לפני כי מלאה הארץ חמס מפניהם והנני משחיתם את הארץ׃ |
14 Build an ark out of cypress wood. Make rooms inside the ark, and coat it with tar, both inside and out.
| עשה לך תבת עצי גפר קנים תעשה את התבה וכפרת אתה מבית ומחוץ בכפר׃ |
15 This is how to build it: the ark is to measure 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.
| וזה אשר תעשה אתה שלש מאות אמה ארך התבה חמשים אמה רחבה ושלשים אמה קומתה׃ |
16 Make a roof for the ark, leaving a cubit-wide opening between the roof and the top of the sides. Put a door in the side of the ark, and construct three decks inside.
| צהר תעשה לתבה ואל אמה תכלנה מלמעלה ופתח התבה בצדה תשים תחתים שנים ושלשים תעשה׃ |
17 I myself am going to flood the earth with water that will destroy everything that breathes, Every living thing everywhere on earth will die.
| ואני הנני מביא את המבול מים על הארץ לשחת כל בשר אשר בו רוח חיים מתחת השמים כל אשר בארץ יגוע׃ |
18 But I will keep my agreement with you. You are to go into the ark, taking with you your wife and your sons and their wives.
| והקמתי את בריתי אתך ובאת אל התבה אתה ובניך ואשתך ונשי בניך אתך׃ |
19 Take a pair, male and female, of every kind of animal into the ark and make sure you keep them alive.
| ומכל החי מכל בשר שנים מכל תביא אל התבה להחית אתך זכר ונקבה יהיו׃ |
20 The same applies to every kind of bird, livestock, and the creatures that run along the ground—a pair of every kind will come to you so they can be kept alive.
| מהעוף למינהו ומן הבהמה למינה מכל רמש האדמה למינהו שנים מכל יבאו אליך להחיות׃ |
21 Take all kinds of food with you too. Store it so you and the animals will have enough to eat.”
| ואתה קח לך מכל מאכל אשר יאכל ואספת אליך והיה לך ולהם לאכלה׃ |
22 Noah did exactly what God ordered him to do.
| ויעש נח ככל אשר צוה אתו אלהים כן עשה׃ |
