< Genesis 46 >

1 So Israel left for Egypt with everything he had. When he arrived at Beersheba he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.
profectusque Israhel cum omnibus quae habebat venit ad puteum Iuramenti et mactatis ibi victimis Deo patris sui Isaac
2 During the night God spoke to Israel in a vision. “Jacob! Jacob!” he called. “I'm here,” he replied.
audivit eum per visionem nocte vocantem se et dicentem sibi Iacob Iacob cui respondit ecce adsum
3 “I am God, the God of your father! Don't be afraid to go to Egypt, because I will turn you and your descendants into a great nation.
ait illi Deus ego sum Fortissimus Deus patris tui noli timere et descende in Aegyptum quia in gentem magnam faciam te ibi
4 I will go to Egypt with you, and I promise to bring you back again. And Joseph will personally close your eyes when you die.”
ego descendam tecum illuc et ego inde adducam te revertentem Ioseph quoque ponet manum suam super oculos tuos
5 Then Jacob left Beersheba. His sons took him, their children, and their wives to Egypt using the wagons Pharaoh had sent.
surrexit Iacob a puteo Iuramenti tuleruntque eum filii cum parvulis et uxoribus suis in plaustris quae miserat Pharao ad portandum senem
6 They also took with them all their livestock and all the personal belongings they had accumulated in the country of Canaan. So Jacob and everyone in his extended family went to Egypt,
et omnia quae possederat in terra Chanaan venitque in Aegyptum cum omni semine suo
7 including all his sons and grandsons, daughters and granddaughters.

8 The following is the genealogy of Israel and his sons who went to Egypt: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn.

28 Jacob sent Judah on ahead to meet Joseph and find out the way to Goshen. When they arrived in Goshen,
misit autem Iudam ante se ad Ioseph ut nuntiaret ei et ille occurreret in Gessen
29 Joseph ordered his chariot made ready and went to meet his father Israel there. As soon as he arrived, he hugged his father and wept for a long time.
quo cum pervenisset iuncto Ioseph curru suo ascendit obviam patri ad eundem locum vidensque eum inruit super collum eius et inter amplexus flevit
30 “Now I can die in peace because I have seen your face again and know you're still alive,” Israel told Joseph.
dixitque pater ad Ioseph iam laetus moriar quia vidi faciem tuam et superstitem te relinquo
31 Joseph told his brothers and his father's household, “I'm going to go and report to Pharaoh and tell him, ‘My brothers and my father's household have arrived from the country of Canaan to join me.
et ille locutus est ad fratres et ad omnem domum patris sui ascendam et nuntiabo Pharaoni dicamque ei fratres mei et domus patris mei qui erant in terra Chanaan venerunt ad me
32 They are shepherds and keep livestock. They have brought with them their flocks and herds and all their possessions.’
et sunt viri pastores ovium curamque habent alendorum gregum pecora sua et armenta et omnia quae habere potuerunt adduxerunt secum
33 When Pharaoh calls for you and asks you, ‘What work do you do?’
cumque vocaverit vos et dixerit quod est opus vestrum
34 tell him, ‘Your servants have looked after livestock since we were children, both us and our fathers before us.’ That way you'll be able to live here in Goshen, because Egyptians look down on shepherds.”
respondebitis viri pastores sumus servi tui ab infantia nostra usque in praesens et nos et patres nostri haec autem dicetis ut habitare possitis in terra Gessen quia detestantur Aegyptii omnes pastores ovium
